Capturing ships?

vassock

Landlubber
I am having a lot of trouble with this game. First of all, I started with the non-campaign character, some guy called Ian. This gave me a ship that has 50% health and no money. I completed a few quests and got 4,000. So, I fixed the ship and bought some men so I have 15 crew members (out of total available of 19 for this ship). However, I can't seem to capture other ships. Whenever I board a ship, it's just me and one other guy. Where are the rest of my men? Does it scale down the # of fighters, while maintaining proportions? If so, how can I win? I always get swarmed and defeated.

Don't know how to figure it out. I try to cut their numbers down with grapeshot, but they are usually better shots than I am. On top of that, the battles appear to be randomly generated, so I often get thrown into the middle of two enemies. And even if I win...I can't keep the ship since officers are apparently nonexistent in the game.

BTW, is there any way to cut down the enemy's troops before battle begins? The cannons are inaccurate and I can barely hit anything. Also, how do I fire my gun?

Not having the game myself, I can't help you with all your questions.
You might be able to find out how much crew the enemy ship has by using your spyglass (press Tab in 1st person sailing mode in PotC).
There might also be a "Fast Travel" to the ships in the [Enter] menu like in PotC and you might be able to see HP and crew numbers there too.

Cutting down enemy's troops is done through grapeshot, which you're already doing.
I imagine there ought to be a button for firing your gun; check the controls in the options menu.

Hello, to fire your gun it's the left button of your mouse. "fast travel" to go near a ship doesn't work(bug)?

Not a bug. "Fast travel" only to friendly or neutral ships.

there is an abilitien thats called musket volly that kills 25% of the crew as you board it

I have 19 crew (max for my starting war tirade). Yes, mouse 1 fires guns when the target aim point is red, but it is still incredibly inaccurate. Does Q fire the guns in a different way or something? Also, my main problem now is no officers. I need at least 1 to make him skipper of captured ship.

Anyway, I finally managed to capture a ship. It's the Pearl and better than the War Tirade (much more crew, space and guns). I should be able to win with numbers now. Unfortunately, I still have no captains. The port controller keeps saying he has nobody who would interest me.

I believe the port controller is only there, to tell you that there are freelance officers that have just either sailed in or out of port that is relevant to any missions that you are given (and not related to officers that you can hire). For example I was told that one officer broke a poor woman's heart and now she wants him dead, basically she wants me to kill him, if i manage to encounter him on the high seas... so the port controller is like some sort of information centre of who goes in and out of port. If you want to check for officers, they should be in the tavern, just talk to everyone there.

Okay, thanks, I understand

However, I now have another problem. I recently capped a ship, sank another one, went back to port. As you guessed, I now have an officer (level 3). However, something strange has happened. For some reason, my character now has (-1) next to all of his abilities! Does anyone know why this is? Also, my ships sell for under 2 grand! WTF? I've sold worse ships there for 11!

Okay, I figured out the problem. It happens when I am in command of the some ship called Roter, class 5 trader or something. When I swap ships back to a swoop or any other ship actually, my stats come back to normal. So, I basically can't keep the ship. Must be cursed since commanding it miraculously reduces my stealth and trading abilities.

This is because you're ability isn't high enough to command such ships. You have to increase in level to be able to command them without the penalty.

Ah, okay, thanks. I understand now. What level should I be? I am at 3 now. I guess I'll settle for capping and selling them. Anyway, ever since I found the officer in the tavern, things have been going well. With him as a companion on raids, I don't even have to shoot the cannons. Just board and take over. The key is obviously strength in numbers. I have a sloop now with 80+ men and that officer. I already got god of death as my first perk. Once I get the musket volley, what will I have to do to get it to function? It says something about appointing an officer with the same skill.

if its not gunner than musketvolly is automaticly fired as you board a ship <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
if you have an officer on gunner he needs the ability <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Commanding ships depends on your "Navigation" skill not "rank".
