Hi all, it got a little quiet in here for some reason, so I am posting.

1)<u>Comedy Central's Greatest Smarta.s.s.es</u>
Did any of you see this show on Comedy Central? It is amazing who made what spot. I can't believe that Bugs Bunny made #4 and Bart Simpson #2. Bill Murry made #1. When I saw how Bugs Bunny made it, It made me think, what if they made cartoons get into adult situations and swear and what not. This has been attempted, but not very often, and not usually with the old cartoons. Many new cartoons do that, but it would be funny to see the old ones do that kind of stuff.

2)<u>Myth or Fact?</u>
I heard comedian Denis Leary talking about how someone said that red meat stays in your colon for 15 years. Denis replies "I paid for it so I want to stay there" (That isn't exactly what he said. I guessing many of you have seen him.) Is that true? I don't think it is humanly possible.

3)<u>Steeve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter</u>
How many of you watch this guy? I am pretty sure now that he does some of his stunts just to get ratings. He just had his "Crock Week" on Animal Planet and it is amazing some of the stupid things he can do. One thing I have discovered is that any time you see him bend down, he is either picking up a snake, some small animal, or a piece of dung. On one episode he log rolled toward a pack of waterbuffalo or what ever they were. On another episode, he was in a system of Australia rivers and streams, and was putting on trackors and identifiers on crocks, and by the time he was done, he had a broken finger and a broken rib. I am just waiting for the day that he get's a arm torn off or something, because it is coming. Hopefully it never happens.

4)<u>In the Movies</u>
A bunch of movies are coming out, and I want to see all of them. There are a ton of comedies coming out like "Dodgeball" and "White Chicks" and they did another cartoon to movie picture "Gardfield". There is also a lot of histories out (at least after New Years) Including "Troy" and "King Arthur". And there is "Harry Potter 3". How many of you out there have seen these movies or have other movies that are out that aren't listed here?

5)<u>Summer is Here!</u>
The First Day of Summer was yesterday, right after Father's Day. Did anyone do anything interesting on Father's Day or the first day of Summer? Ever since summer is here, what do you all plan to do?

6)<u>Pirate Projects</u>
So far the research has been going well. I will update all my research stuff hopefully by next week.
 
Fatty deposits and red meat can remain in your body for long periods of time. Some of it is natural and some of it is brought on by the consumption of too much meat. The length to which it stays in the body? No idea.




Perhaps we should have more rum and think on it. Aye.
 
Presumably when John Wayne died they found a LOT of red meat still in his colon... So it does happen. Not sure it would LAST fifteen years tho. I've seen Harry Potter 3 and it's VERY good, the best yet. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> I would like to see Troy and King Arthur - and Garfield, which looks pretty funny.

My "summer" (it lasts here long past what in the US is termed "summer") will most likely be spent running around with friends - some pool parties - perhaps some camping - taking lots of pictures - and I'd like to go to a place east of Palm Springs CA to see some petroglyphs. It's supposed to be a pretty remote place, but awesome... I tried to go out there a few years ago but ran out of time (so many sights, so little time!) and had to return home before I made it...

There's a cool Warbirds (WW2 warplanes) museum out in Palm Springs that I would like to revisit...

I might even try actually making it to two different piratey events - one on Catalina Island (at Two Harbors) the first weekend in October, called "Buccaneer Days", and another in Ojai CA - the Gold Coast Pirate Faire. Hello all, been busy and all.

1)<u>Weather 'round Wisconsin</u>
Man, we have been having bad weather lately. For the past month and a half, we have had so much flooding lately due to rain. Last Wedsneday, we had a Power 3 Tornadoes, and now a 4.5 earthquake in Illinois 70 or miles southwest of Chicago, felt from Misourri to Wisconsin, from Iowa to Indiana. Weird isn't it?

2)<u>Collectors's Edition of Master and Commander</u>
I just got the collector's edition of Master and Commander, and the Special Edition DVD is a must have! It has so much on the making of the movie, and things about the time period. The collector's edition is the only way to go. The movie itself is good, but you need the extra stuff to appreciate it, and the deleted scenes are good too.

3)<u>Modern Personalities VS. Old Times Personalities</u>
One thing it said in the Special Edition DVD of Master and Commander, is that it is really hard to see the old fashion personalities these days. Today, we have more active personalities, like "HI! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" /> " , but the old fashioned people didn't. They weren't exposed to the food we eat, or the media we were. You see that a lot in Eastern Europe. They just don't show feeling, due to that each day is work, and only time to be friendly is when you visit with friends and family, but other than that, nothing. Watch the faces of the crew on Master and Commander as they are being talked to together by the captain, and you will see what I mean.

4)<u>England</u>
Do any of you here live in England? I wish I could visit it. Here in America, they don't have the Naval Musems like they do over there, with the Napoleonic War History and Piracy History. How differen't is it today from us in the U.S.?

5)<u>More Reenacting</u>
As time goes on, what type of reenactments there are in America change. During the 1970s, American Revolution Reenactments were high, due to the 200th Aniversary of our country. When Ken Burn's Civil War and the Gettysburg Movies were released, there was a high in Civil War Reenacting, which still exist today, due to that it is the most written, talked about, and the War that most effected America. Now, with the movies Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, and the 60th Aniversary of `D-Day`, there is a boost in World War 2 Reenactments. Are any of you interested in the above wars? I heard that they are going to make a Pacific Version of Band of Brothers.

6)<u>Royals Sails?</u>
I have been reading many Napoleonic Naval Stories in the past year, but there is just one thing. I constantly hear of the Royals Sails in these books. The Royals are the highest sail on a mast with 4 sails. But as I understand, most ships from the 17th Century to the American Civil War didn't commonly have Royals. I thought that ships with 4 sails a mast or more didn't become common until the Civil War and a in the 20th Century. Can some one explain?

3.) Yes, I think it was like that for "A Knight's Tale" too - they shot a lot of it in the Czech Republic, and the extras they hired for the crowd were of the "old time personalities"... It gave an interesting "peasant" look to the crowd and I thought it was nicely carried off.

5.) A Pacific version of "Band of Brothers" would get my attention - especially if it was the Marines... 1)<u>Who has the most Posts</u>
I once again checked were I am on the membership list, and I think I am doing good for the amount of posting I do. I am number 17. There is no way that I will ever get into the top 10 at my progress. Now the top ten people are in the thousands of post. If you took the top 50 posters, and combined them together, you would have the majority of all the posts here.

2)<u>Having a lot of Posts</u>
Having a lot of posts doesn't nessesarily mean that you are a veteran here anymore it seems. It seems that every month or so that we sort of get a hand full of people who really want to post, then we loose a few. Then there are those who rarely over post.

3)<u>My post total, OVER 700!</u>
I am now over 700 posts. Hopefully by the end of the summer, I can add another 100 posts.

4)<u>PA! first year, congradulations. </u>
It has finally been a year since PA! has opened it's doors. It feels like 3 years! We have been through at least 3 moves and face lifts, Spammers, highs, lows, dozens if not hundreds of mods, and disapointments on games. Now when we aproach the last quarter of the year, we will be seeing a new batch of pirate games, that will bring PA! into a new rush of activity when the are released. Me, I am not much into playing these games, due to they are only half historically accurate. The only game I would loke forward to would be Pirates of the Burning Sea, but that is only accessable by fast internet hookup, which I don't got. But I do look forward to all the research that will come out of it.
How long will PA! last? I think it will last as long as PC games are popular, and if they keep on making Pirate games. PC games are different from Video games because, with PC, you can tap into the games and change it to your liking, which adds a reason why people play PC games.

5)<u>The Patrick O'Brian Series</u>
I have just started reading the series, and I am already 2 books in. Just by reading these 2 books, I got a feeling that there won't be another book for this series. Also, I did not realize that there was 20 BOOKS! Horation Hornblower was only 11 books.

6)<u>Pirates of the Caribbean, 1 Year Aniversary</u>
It has been 1 year since Pirates of the Caribbean has come out. It has been the most successful pirate movie for decades. It was this movie that this forum started on. Hopefully their sequals bring in more people to this part of history.

7)<u>What is in store for Captain Python's Table?</u>
Well, if I still get replies to my topics, then it will stay. For me, I will continue to do research. Being on this forum has changed me. I went from a no nothing game addict with a steriotypical view of Pirates, to a Pirate Age historian that sees the wrong ways of most of the games we play, who has half retired playing these games. I will still be with you all for I hope years to come, or until the end.

4.) Yup, PA will soon turn one year old. Amazing, isn't it? I am glad I managed to find this site, too - imagine, a whole bunch of pirate game enthusiasts all in one spot - and the `historically-minded` types just make it for me - consider how many gaming sites are out there - full of kids who talk about nothing much - then we have PA, which has people like you, Python, like MuddyMonkey, and others, who are interested in history and research... It's good conversation that is sometimes sorely lacking on other sites, but what keeps me here...

6.) It will be interesting to see what the sequels of PotC will bring...

7.) We would miss you if you decide to disappear off, but would of course wish you well - I know you've got a lot of other interests besides this, but I am glad you happen to pop in here from time to time and help stir up our "grey matter" - You are our "Pirate of Many Ideas", and we appreciate having you around!

1)<u>History of Captain Python's Table</u>
I just realized that Captain Python's Table has been a part of this forum for a long time. This is what I would call a "Behind the Thread" thing (sort of like "Behind the Music" Here it is:

<u>February 10th, 2004:</u> The original “Captain Python’s Table” is created. The idea was created from Spaz’s News Thread. From that point until about `4-6` days later, Captain_Python pleads for the thread to be made into a Sticky.

<u>February 14th to the 16th, 2004:</u> “Captain Python’s Table” is made into a sticky, but Cpatain_Python has a second thread made, and that is stickied, and is all complete by the 16th.

<u>End of April, 2004:</u> <b>The Table Struggle</b>: During this time, people started their own “tables” and demanded that they be stickies. From that point on, the term “table” was coined. Here is a definition of a “table” in the forum.

<b>Table:</b> A thread started by one person, who posts a subject, or interesting topic on the thread for conversation and discussion. It is also a place to post other items related to that thread’s topic. It is usually a sticky (up until May).

Anyways, they even thought about making a “Table” Forum, but in the end, all “tables” were made into just plain threads. The big other 3 “Tables” of that time was Spaz’s News, Kev’Os Corner Table Quotes, and Doimed’s Caffine Driven Variety Hour.

<u>May 1st, 2004:</u> Ever since the table wasn’t a sticky anymore, the old thread was crowded with 11 pages of posts, and then a new thread was made for “Captain Python’s Table” and on the end of it “Edition 3” due to this is the third thread the table had gone through.

<u>Mid May, 2004:</u> The Burning Brig is created, and out of 400 threads, over 300 threads were moved to the Burning Brig, and the Blind Parrot is partially deserted. The only reason “Captain Python’s Table” wasn’t moved was because there are so much historical discussion and movie/book/music reviews on the table. It was on the Burning Brig for a few hours, but was moved back. I think the Blind Parrot is a combination of the old “The Spyglass” media forum, the old “Dead Man’s Chest” historical forum, and the activity and historical conversation of the Original “Blind Parrot”

PRESENT

So the Table has been around for 5 of the 12 months of the Pirate's Ahoy existance, or almost half it's time. It has had a total of 1821 views and 285 replies on the this edition and the second edition of this table. May it continue.

The only thing I ask is that more people start replying more.

2)<u>Catalina vs. Spaz</u>
Cat has now 4,000 posts (congrats.). Spaz has now 4,250 posts. First, does Spaz even post anymore? Second, if not, Cat could take first pretty soon. So, do you think it is possible?

A small word on the "sticky" topics - the admins and the tavernkeepers voted to take most of them down - pretty much to let the threads stand on their own merits - and they have, for the most part. The change had been agreed upon mainly because the sticky topics were getting crowded, and essential info was being lost in the muddle...

The split came off because of a lot of useless chatter mixed in with the historical stuff and because we needed a separate historical section. This is the section we all asked for - Remember voting on the name? Crow's Nest &tc? I'm not sure why we didn't go with the popular vote, but we moderators came up with the other names and the vote happened again - with Burning Brig becoming the "chatter" and the Blind Parrot becoming the history/movies/"serious pirate stuff" section.

I think the main reason it's kinda quiet around here right now is because MuddyMonkey and some of the other historians are off taking care of "real life" - and there are few of us left to "carry on" (and carrying on is what we tend to do best, LOL!).

But we're here - and there's no reason why we can't continue to be here - discussing history and movies and other piratey stuff... Spaz will post now and again, but I think real life took over for him for now and he's not online as much as before. PiratesAhoy has gone through some interesting changes since I signed on - actually my TRUE join date is sometime in September of 2003 - but I didn't start posting regularly here until January... (I think I initially came here looking for pirate smileys, ha!).
 
Capt. Python, I will most certainly make a concerted effort to post more at your table. I enjoy reading the posts here, and this thread helps to make Pirates Ahoy! one of the most intelligent forums on the 'net.

And I'd have to place me money on dear Cat for overtaking Spaz. LOL, "loquacious" makes me think of a really funny book by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, <i>Good Omens</i>. One of the characters was Sister Mary Loquacious, of the Chattering Order of Saint Beryl... You'll have to read the book to understand, however - she's not really a nun in the conventional (ooooh, PUN!) sense.

If you take a look at the Difficulties of Pirates/Pirate Tactics thread and Poll, you will see I have made a nice little group of tactics. I thought then, why not make a article and put it on the main site? I could write a good article full of tactics edited from what I write here in the forum, and some I haven't even shared yet. I already sent a PM to William. What do you all think?

2)<u>Name that Steriotype</u>
We all know that for each race, and even nationality, we have a steriotype. We have Gangsters, Rednecks, The Drunk Irishmen, The Bad Teeth Englishmen, The Cowboy, the Surfer, and there is more. Can anyone else name anymore common steriotypes?
They should make a new gameshow, "NAME THAT STERIOTYPE" and they have a big wheel, and have a part of the game were you name the steriotype by soundfile. That would be something Mad TV or Saturday Night Live might do.

3)<u>Crossballs</u>
Have any of you seen this show on Comedy Central? It is a excellent debate show. It sort of puts a funny spin on modern topics. Sort of like we do here on the table.

4)<u>The old Honor Role</u>
Remember how we have the old Honor Role at the begining of the thread? I think until I get multiple people answering this thread, I will have to clean it off for now. It might return.

Topics for `7-20`-04

1)Short Review on Book: Under the Black Flag, by David Cordingly
I have just rented this book, and After Reading it the first time, I rushed to the book store and bought it. It is that good. It brings a totally different view on Piracy than any book I have read. It is simpler to read than most books providing this type of information, so the common person can understand it. For all those beggining historians on Piracy, this book is a must have. Also, ever since it has been out for about 6 or 7 years, most high price book stores have them at just around $15, on Amazon a little over $10, and probably cheaper at half price and discount book stores.

2)Personal Discovery about Piracy
Ever since I picked up Under the Black Flag, I have seen that a few of my theories I have had are little off. The main one I edited in my mind:

Most pirates were desperate men, and most of them were sailors. In fact as time goes on, the percentage goes higher from 75% to 95%.

Now my opinion that Most pirates were desperate men, and a lot of them were sailors. Somewhere around 66% to 75%, and the rest were peasants and poor fishermen who were desperate too. But now I know I was wrong, and I think I figured out why.
If a peasant is poor and desperate, it is most likely that he would first think of being a theif on land or join the army. And as for fishermen, they might become pirates, but are most likely just to become theifs on land, or join the Navy or army (navy more likely).
For the common person, the sea was a more mysterious and scary place to a person who did not know what it was about. The ship was the fastest thing around, the equivilent of when trains first came around, or planes, or the space shuttle. When new technology is discovered, and new places people have never been. People are automatically scared of new things they don't know about.

That is the main thing, but there are a few minor things. But this relates to the next topic:

3)Stall on PA! Articles
I will be writing articles for PA! on Pirates and their tactics. I was planning to have it done by Thursday, but with things I have read in "Under the Black Flag", I will have to go over my articles completely and change anything nessesary. But I garuntee you that it will be good. The only thing I can't decide is if it I should use 2nd or 3rd Person.
 
I finished reading Cordingly's "Under the Black Flag" this Spring. A marvelous read, and incredibly informitive. He does a splendid job of stripping back the romantic veneer from pirates and piracy, and gives one a better understanding of how the pirates and piracy as a whole worked. And he never once ridicules the romanticism attributed to piracy. I highly recommend this book, whether you are well read on the subject or simply in search of a primer. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I'm about to start Captain Johnson's "A General History of the... Pyrates." As with many books written during the 18th Century, it's got a bloody long title I feel disinclined to type. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> I'm really looking forward to reading this tome, as Cordingly makes several references to it as "the defining work on piracy." I have had Cordingly's "Under the Black Flag" for a long time, it IS a wonderful book on piracy - he is right now the world's foremost authority on piracy, and that is THE book to read if you want to know more...

Yes, a lot of desperate people went to sea as pirates - they did it to live - there was simply no other way. Grace O'Malley and her crew - of fishermen - turned to piracy to live because the English were so curtailing the Irish way of life that there was no food to be had - and no way to get any more unless they set traps for ships sailing by...

Hi all, it has been a while since I did one of these.

1)<u>Movie Review: The Village</u>
I just saw the movie <u>The Village</u>. It may not be Pirate related, but it is history related. It is about a small village, that shares it's borders with a terrible set of monsters or some sort that wear red robes. They live neutrally to each other. The only things are that the people of this village can't show the color red and they cannot go outside the borders. The village is probably in the time period of the 1840s or 1850s, or 1870s. It is hard to tell. But some things that occured to me is that why this village doesn't get newspaper from the nearest city that produces them. Also, why doesn't the government help? (maybe they wouldn't believe them) Why isn't there a militia? Almost (if not all) villages, towns, and cities had militas. All of these will be explained at the end of the movie, with the huge twist. It is scary. When I went on opening night, the place was filled, and everyone screaming at one time was funny to hear. Good movie overall.

2)<u>Captain Python's Tactics, Continuing</u>
As you have all seen, I have written 5 articles on tactics and techniques Pirates, Privateers, and sometimes Navy Ships would use. Future plans are to do more articles. The next article should be "Multi Ship Tactics."

3)<u>The World of Redneck Comedy, Update</u>
In the world of Redneck Comedy, there are a few new things coming. Just recently, Bill Engavel (I think that is spelled right) did a hour and a half show Called "Bill Engavel: Here's Your Sign" He and 4 others were on the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. He and Larry the Cable Guy, Ron White, and Jeff Foxworthy did the tour about a half year or year ago. Now, Bill, Larry, and Ron have all done independent hour and a half stand up shows, all premiering on Comedy Central. With that, on the WB, Blue Collar TV premiered last Thurday, which Bill, Larry, and Jeff are actors on it. The reason why Redneck Comedy is becoming so popular is that this type of comedy can be more clean than other comedies, and does not target people as much and butcher them like some comedians do. It talks about family issues, and makes them funnier. What really started the whole thing was Jeff Foxworthy, and other commedians caught on. Jeff is actually the most succsesful commedian in CD sales in the World today, with his famous "You might be a Redneck If..." phrases. I suggest watching any of the shows above, due to that they are very entertaining.
 
1.) A friend of mine just recommended this movie to me, he said it was very well done. I'm curious to see it as I think this is the kind of "creepy movie" that I like, suspense, not blood and gore... (Is that funny, coming from a pirate?)

3.) Since my move I haven't had my TV plugged in (wall unit still needs to be moved in, floor in room where it is supposed to go *just* finished last night) - I was at a friend's house this past weekend and saw TV for the first time in about three weeks (other than small doses at the neighbor's). Immediately I started crabbing at the announcer and complaining about politicians and the news and everything else... My friend commented that I could change the channel, HA, and I thought, I could do that, but I was having too much fun being a grump! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Strange effect television has on me... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> I will be mostly happy to have my TV back so I can watch my videocassettes (such as Treasure Island with Charlton Heston as Silver)...
 
I greatly enjoyed your tactics articles, Captain! Well researched, as usual, and quite informative. I recently purchased a book titled "Broadsides: The Age of Fighting Sail", which you may be interested in. I've not read it meself, as I'm engrossed in Cpat. Johnson's "A General History..." at the moment, so I can't say whether it's a `must-read` or not.

Cat, me wife would dearly love it if I left the TV off for a few <b>months</b>!
