We've never worked with a "mods that must be made" kind of list. There's no point really either, because all our modders are freelancers and though some of them will take suggestions, it's still up to the modders themselves to decide what they want to do. But we'll certainly remember the idea and see if we can get someone so far as to do it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

For example:
Early Explorers: Portugese quest.
The Spanish Main: Spanish quest.
Golden Age of Piracy: Pirate quest.
Colonial Powers: French quest.
Revolutions: American quest.
The Corsican: British quest.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Right now we have:
Early Explorers: Devlin Quests
The Spanish Main: Bartolomeu o Portugues Quest
Golden Age of Piracy: Standard Storyline
Colonial Powers: The Legend of Jack Sparrow
Revolutions: Master and Commander
The Corsican: Horatio Hornblower

So each period does have it's own quest, but most quests are either English or pirate quests or a combination. Of course each quest does have the other nations play a part in there as well, but there's no real nation-specific quests for the other nations, except the Portuguese Bartolomeu o Portuguese quest.

Whatever storyline you choose, you can always ignore the main quest and go off free-lancing on your own. In every time period, you can join any nation's navy and start sinking their enemy's ships. If you choose the "standard" storyline, it will be the same as Build 13 Final. The only thing the <i>Selectable Storylines</i> mod does is to give you a greater selection of main quests to choose from.
Indeed it's unfortunate that we lost the "Choose Character" interface for now; for whatever reason it didn't want to work together with the Storylines mod for now. But it's still relatively easy to set your preferred starting character model and ship through the code (see below). <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Just for the record, here's my ideas on the "Customize Character" interface:
<i>When you press "New Game", you get the new "Selectable Storylines" interface. Here you can choose the main quest you want to play, but you should also get the choice of "none". Then when you're happy with the default character and ship, you can just start a new game. If not, you press "Customize Character" and you can select your character model, ship and nation, the time period and possibly also your starting location. If the cheatmode is enabled, you'll also be able to increase your character level and skills, as well as your money, right there in the interface. This would allow you to play any quest as any character you would want and also gives you the opportunity to ignore the quests and go free-lancing.</i>

<!--quoteo(post=270823:date=Jul 28 2008, 05:36 AM:name=Bartholomew Roberts)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Bartholomew Roberts @ Jul 28 2008, 05:36 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=270823"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->There should be some king of sandbox or free mode where you choose what nation you want to be with, what period, etc where the only quests you do is hunting pirate, merchant, etc. Off course this is just an idea<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Right now, if you REALLY don't want to have a main quest, select the "Master and Commander" storyline. There is no quest there AT ALL. In PROGRAM\Storyline\JackAubrey.c, you can change your starting character model and ship quite easily:<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->    sl.(sn).start.location = "Eleuthera_port";
    sl.(sn).start.port = "Eleuthera_port";
    sl.(sn).start.model = "Aubrey";
    sl.(sn).start.name = "Jack";
    sl.(sn).start.lastname = "Aubrey";
    sl.(sn).start.ship = "Surprise";
    sl.(sn).start.shipname = "HMS Surprise";
    sl.(sn).start.date.hour = 10;
    sl.(sn).start.date.min = 24;
    sl.(sn).start.date.sec = 42;
    sl.(sn).start.date.day = 15;
    sl.(sn).start.date.month = 4;
    sl.(sn).start.date.year = 1777;<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->
The time period depends on the selected year. So by tweaking these settings, you can basically set up your game completely to your liking while the "Customize Character" interface is unavailable.

BEFORE extracting the Build 14 Alpha 8 file, yes. The correct PROGRAM folder is included in the download, so you'll end up with the correct PROGRAM folder after all.
The reason for this is to ensure there are no useless files in your PROGRAM folder that might cause trouble. Same thing goes for the other two folders you have to remove.
I have tested the installation process myself and the end result is exactly the same as my game version, which works. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

ok allready did it and deleted with out thinking lol

If you deleted it AFTER extracting the Alpha, extract the Alpha again. The game can't do much without it's PROGRAM folder. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I think that one of the biggest advantages of being an American would be the quality of ships and offcers. While other ships are good, American-built vessels could have that extra edge over other nation's vessels that gives the USA a purpose. Afterall... that was one of the largest concerns of other world powers once America stepped onto the world stage. Our superfrigates were almost unbeatable, especially due to the heart and soul of our crews and officers. Figures such as John Paul Jones and Stephen Decatur were some of the boldest and most daring officers of the age, and when given a well-built ship... that made quite a problem for America's enemies. So, I would make American ship's stats better than other nations and would give American characters higher reputations, more skill points, and more expierence. They need to be some of the best sailors, navigators, and leaders around...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Did you notice that forts and towns now use different flags? The file for this is <i>flagfrt.tga.tx</i> and is actually your previous flagpack update with the US flag added.
Would it be possible for you to also make a Dutch flag with the "WIC" logo on it like the current flagall.tga.tx has?
In any case, some further flagwork will be needed in the future. It might become possible to give each time period it's own flagset, so that will require a fair amount of flags.
Alternatively we might just add a new Napoleonic France nation so that at least the French tricolour would not show up in the early periods. Right now we have the French tricolour or all ships and the fleur de lis version on land. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wacko:" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

<!--quoteo(post=270881:date=Jul 28 2008, 09:02 PM:name=Captain Hector Barbosa)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Captain Hector Barbosa @ Jul 28 2008, 09:02 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=270881"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Can I extact Build 14 alpha 6 full version on B14A6 update2?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->I take it you mean "Can I extract Build 14 Alpha <b>8</b> Full on Build 14 Alpha 6 Update 2"? If so, I think the answer would be yes. However, I do recommend installing on top of Build 13 Final if you can to ensure a clean install with no useless left-over files. If you do want to install on top of B14A6U2, at least remove the PROGRAM and RESOURCE\INI folders prior to installation.

Forts have their own flags? now that is interesting seeing as forts usually did not have naval ensigns, so the spanish in effect would fly the cross of burgundy as i recall and the british would fly the union jack.
What else would be interesting were if we could add a set of flags for military ships and a set for merchantmen/civilian

That is something I would really like as well. The main challenge is finding a work-around the engine. Pirate_KK has done a lot of experimenting with that and the different flags on the forts are the first result of that. I had never believed that would be possible. With a bit of luck, Pirate_KK will find ways to further allow different flags in different situations. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

I am replying to some questions Commodore John Paul Jones sent me in a PM, because the answers are relevant to other users as well:<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->The game starts on a Sunday, so is everyone in Eulrethra at Church? No tavern owner, storekeeper, tailor... none of it. Have they been added yet?
Also... I sailed from Eulrethra and tried to sit at sea to wait for Monday, thinking the week would start and everyone would be there.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Eleuthera is still very much unfinished. There's some locations, but the only characters that have been added are the two soldiers in the port and a storekeeper without a dialog file. We might eventually completely redo Eleuthera, just like Bartolomeu did with Curacao and Thomas did with Aruba; no real work has been done on it yet. Pirate_KK simply added a placeholder town so that other people could finish the work.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I went back to 3rd person sailing mode and found myself in the jaws of the British fort at ...Bedford is it? I didn't sail anywhere, so how'd that happen?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Indeed that does happen. Not sure why, but for some reason at the beginning of the game the worldmap position is incorrect. That has yet to be fixed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I also noted that when I went to my vessel at Eulrethra, I was in some random inlet and couldn't see the town.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->I don't think there are actually any towns in 3D sailing mode on the newly added islands (yet?). Would be nice to add that in the future. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I tried to change my model to a USA_lut_18, but it doesn't seem to read... the game doesn't start.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->What Storyline did you try for that? The USA officer and soldier models only exist when the USA exist, so they won't work in periods in which the USA don't exist.
Alternatively it is possible that these models are only initialized during the process of starting a new game. Please try USA_adm_18 instead and see if that does work. I ensured he would always exist because I needed him for you in the Devlin quests.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Also, I saw that there were tons of American officers... no citizens... at the docks, but there's just citizens in the town.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->That's because the port is given the ".navy" attribute. The same applies to Port Royal, Saint Pierre, Antigua and a couple of other ports.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I played some of the Hornblower quest and noticed that the names displayed when speaking to a character don't match who they're supposed to be. I think the game is generating random names.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->I think I know when that happens, for I have noticed it as well. If you start ENGINE.exe and start a storyline, the names are correctly shown. If you then start another storyline or the same one again without first closing the game completely, the names will not show up correctly. Try closing the game and then starting the Hornblower quest.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->The Maps section in the F2 menu doesn't come up... which makes it almost impossible to get anywhere, as I cannot just go bumbling about and hope I find it because my provisions won't last...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->The map interface if now in F2>Inventory>Maps. This is to allow you to buy maps from islands and such and view those as well.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I can't buy any more because there's nobody at the store... and I can't wait till the next morning because nobody's at the tavern save two random people walking about.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Which store is that?

okies had alpha 7 just did what I was told as far as dumping alpha 8 in the thingy, extracted, overwrote, and then did the runme.bat thingy.

now when I start a new character at least with jack sparrow, I get a black screen and nothin else.
