So one thing's for certain: We need to do that for Alpha 8 as well.

I'm not sure you'll gain a lot of space by doing that : after all for now the only things that have been translated are texts files.

If you'd ask my opinion, here is what I would say : the game should keep the possibility to switch in different languages whenever you want to, and when a translator needs to modify a .c file it would go with the normal download (English). In the languages pack, you would have not only texts but as well the translated loading screens, the RESOURCE\SOUNDS\VOICES, the starting video, and etc.
In the main menu - option - interface change - languages, someone should make so that it find out how many languages pack you have installed - and gray out those you haven't : a little text would explain you must first download the specific language pack. That way those like Morgan Terror who recall his French class as a nightmare wouldn't have this installed, and others who have a lot of free space on the computer and who talks several languages would have all the languages he wants... There is no way in arguing that English is the most commonly used language on this forum, it's really sad but it's like that : it wouldn't be much logical not to have the Build in the language we use to comunicate on the forum...

Now talking on language packs, I fear I would never see a Spanish language pack unless I do it myself - which is not likely to occurs seing how fast goes the French translation. But at least we can still dream about the Russian and German packs, can't we?

that checkbox seems like a good idea to me. and you sure have a good memory as i only said that one or three times, and still very sporadically. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

It already works like that in Alpha 7, a simple virtual sailor! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
If you install a language pack, you can select it in the Options menu. Otherwise the option is grayed out. The downloadable language files contain all language-specific files including loading screens, videos and sounds, as well as dialogs and INI files. The idea of adding s textbox with the download link would be a good idea though. Otherwise people might not find it.

I quickly compiled a Build 14 Alpha 7 Plus version excluding all language and music packs. This did decrease the filesize, but it's still 409 MB. I'm afraid the download can't be made much smaller than that. Unless we can figure out a way to make a batch file to move/copy a lot of files around. But that is really quite compilcated and a lot of work. My full Pirates of the Caribbean installation is now 5 GB.

hmm.....that's still managable. difficult, but managable. for me, at least. people with a slower internet connection will certainly have problems with it. i wonder how big the final build 14 will end up? if it's really humongous, then it will likely have to be split up.

I made a mistake in my merge; the filesize will be smaller than 457 MB. Still pretty big though. I think Build 14 Full is going to be about 1 GB in filesize judging by the calculation I just made! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

The filesize is 409 MB now. Still really quite big. I might be able to save filesize by doing some batch coding. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I managed to get the file down to 322 MB now by removing a lot of files that can just be copied using a batch file. Tomorrow I am going to check if the installation actually works as it should. If it does, I will upload the file and make a feature list so that you can go testing. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I also did some work myself: I fixed the texture of Bartolomeu's ship, I added the missing locators and head files for the new characters and I changed the textures of the Endeavour from .bmp.tx to .tga.tx, decreasing the filesize and hopefully improving the performance of the game somewhat.

That´s a tremendous work, Pieter..wow <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I just have to ask:

Will the Build 14 be the only installer you need on top of the original game?

The final Build 14 will be, but the 322 MB large Build 14 Alpha 7 Plus will require you to install Build 14 Alpha 7 first. The final Build 14 is probably going to be a 1 GB download or something like that.

sorry, can't test it, as much as i'd love to. my computer's memory bank is still not fixed. which isn't that bad, as it gives me a chance to install some other stuff on my computer for a change. at the moment, i'm still slowly but surely working on my music pack, collecting soundtracks and such. i've got some really good ones right now.

I've been thinking a bit more on the Language Packs... I think we should split the files to download into two differents packs, for each different language. One would contain all text files and the newly translated loading screens, and would enable you to chose it in the 'Options' menu. The other would contain videos, sounds and loading screens from stock game translated by Ubisoft - you'll download that only if you have a different stock game version. We can already make thoses : I can do the French one, and some of you can do the others depending on which stock game version you have. We could call them ' ... Language Pack Bonus : download this if your stock game wasn't in ... language.'
As a consequence of using the Ubisoft files, maybe the Ubisoft logo video should be added with the others ones when launching the game with a language pack. I don't like this much, but anyway I'm sure we all press the 'escape' button so...

About the French Language Pack, I'm going to release different versions ones after the others - it's better than waiting for a fully completed one, as we are doing for Build 13.

But then we'd have to upload all the custom-language files from the game. That's a lot of work. Do we really need to do that? I'd only make the code files and the translated new Build sound files and loading screens. That'd be the easiest for me. And it'd be the easiest to install. Only problem is when somebody wants to play in, for example, German while having, for example, the English language version. I personally only have the English language files, so I don't have any translated UbiSoft files anyway. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Would it be really that much of work for you Pieter? After all you decide what you think is best for you. I personnaly don't think it will be more difficult to install, but I've no idea about how much of time it'll cost you to upload those packs.

Anyway I've finished the "French Language Pack - Bonus". But it's heavy : over 200mb, that's why I prefer not to have this mixed with the real translation work. Basicly it's videos + Loading screens + sounds.
Now if we really want to add Ubisoft logo (but do we want that?) : in SeaDogs.c we'll have to change this
<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->    /*case 3:
        {
            InterfaceStates.videoIdx = 4;
            StartPostVideo("intro",1);
            return;
        }
    break;*/<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->
into that
<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->    case 3:
        {
            InterfaceStates.videoIdx = 4;
            StartPostVideo("UBI",1);
            return;
        }
    break;<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->
Those who wouldn't have downloaded a language pack bonus other than the English one wouldn't have the video so they wouldn't see it : all's perfect.

As for the Invasion video : we'll have to make sure the game looks in a 'French' or 'English' subfolder. That would make the code easier, I see that it was complicated with the case you have a invasion_pol video for Polish language. (quests_reaction.c and both_reaction.c, possibly elsewhere too)

Uploading is the worst part, because uploading costs me a looong time. Max upload speed for me is 25 KB/s. Uploading Alpha 7 Plus took me about 4 to 5 hours. That's not funny. I think most people who want to have a different language probably already have the required language version of the game, therefore they'd already have the required files. Also: I have no way of getting the required files myself. I only have the English files.

I'll put the work on the FTP. Forgive my ignorance, but if there is a way I could upload the files for you, I'd be pleased to do so.

If you make the file, I could give you the login information for the Pieter's Pirates Page webspace so that you can upload the file yourself. I can PM you the details if you'd want to do this.

Thanks Pieter, I'm waiting for the PM!
I will upload first the 'French Language Pack - bonus' I've finish. Hopefully a 'French Language Pack ver.1' will follow quickly, it will be unperfect but will contain a lot of what we've done for Build 13 that works for Build 14 alpha7 plus.
