Boarding rules?

Hi, thought I'd ask in the Build since so much have change.

It seems pretty random wether the game allows me to board a ship or not. Having tried many stragegies I can't seem to find any real way to be sure of a capture. One time, I couldnt board the ship until it surrendered... (talking pirat ships here) Even if were at a complete halt both ships I cant board, and sometime I get the option on my way away from it with my back turned against it...

I got all the skillz related to boarding, so how does it work?

(I did search btw, but couldnt find anything)

The boarding tactic that works best for me is coming up from behind the ship and the pulling alongside her. It helps to have a fast ship/good sailing skill for this. Even with your boarding skill maxed you still have to almost touch the other ship to be able to grapple and board.

Hope this Helps <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Oh, the boarding... my curse. Here's how.

1. Get an officer who is grappling 5 or so and is Master of boarding. That will make things much easier.

2. In the AiAbordage.c, there is a string:

Sea.MaxSeaHeight = 1.2; // set maxinum sea height for ship abordage

Set this to somewhere between 3.5 and 5. This will allow you to board in rough seas, and not only when there are almost no waves.

3. The ships relative speeds should be fairly close to zero.

4. Read the post #19 in <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=7754" target="_blank">http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=7754</a> (the rest of the thread is also an interesting read) Do what is suggested in #19.

Happy boarding! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

"high seas" huh, never would have thought of that... (doh)
anyway so according to post 19, u can only board a pirat ship once in the game? thats just silly... :-I

No. According to post 19, there is a possible bug in the system, that is triggered by a "dead looser" occurence. There is a suggested way of fixing that glitch there, too. I followed the advice, since then haven't had problems boarding for many hours of gameplay.

To Den Dee: Is there a code/tactic to make the instant boarding ability work everytime? I hate it when my class 1 ship fails to board a class 5 using the instant boarding ability <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Sorry, no idea. I myself consider "Instant boarding" an utter cheat, so I've never used that perk. I suspect though, the times your instant boarding fails must be due to the ships in question having surrendered to other party, or the sea height being out of the bracket. Just a guess.

Instant boarding only works once per engagment. You'll have to go back to the dock or the worldmap to be able to use it again. Even if it fails you cannot use it a second time in the same engagement.

It does not work if you are too close to the enemy ship. The description says there are some larger classes of ship you cannot Instant Board. There is no maximum distance, far as I know, so you can select Instant Boarding the moment you enter your ship from the dock... as long as the boarding target is far enough away. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Personally I don't use Instant Boarding except for testing. I prefer to use Sail-to which puts me at the edge of gun range and have to get close enough to board, braving the enemy cannons the whole way. But Instant Boarding can be quite a convenience if it's not abused.

What instant boarding is a CHEAT??? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Well, I suppose I am a pirate, so a few cheats here and there are allowable. Besides, I only use it once per engagement. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Seriously though, I think that most of the instant abilities can be considerd as cheats and I use them alot, not to cheat, but to save time. Alot of them dont even work for me the right way anyway. The 180 rams me into my own ships same with the sail to command and the instant boarding doesn't even work 100% of the time. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />
