Availabilty of New Ships

Jason

Buccaneer
Storm Modder
I have a question about the availabilty of some of the new ships that have been added. It seems there are plenty of White Waller Friagates, Schooner Xebecs, US Heavy Frigates (which in the 1690 period should be renamed), Pinances and Fleuts of War both at sea and in the shipyards.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> I have only encounterd one privateer at sea and never in a shipyard and I have never seen a Pirate Corvette either at sea or in a shpyard. Does anyone know why this is and/or how to tweak it? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

BTW that privateer is a sweet little ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Well I've encountered a privateer and a Pirate corvette but NEVER a us heavy frigate or fleuts of war so WE'RE EVEN lol. My guess it's a random generator thing.

Well gentleman, tew be honest although somewhat newer here, I have had some luck troubleshooting thimngs such as this, and hope this helps....but in the buildsettings.h file you have to find the part about ship settings for Pirates and for I think Customs Officers or just a sec....going to check

OKay look for this

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->//**********ENCOUNTER SETTINGS********************************************************
#define MAXPIRATECLASS 3 // type=int, desc="this is the maximum class ship pirates will be given. Defaults to 2."
#define MAXCOASTGUARDCLASS 4 // type=int, desc="this is the maximum class ship for coast guards."
#define MAXMERCHANTCLASS 3 // type=int, desc="DO NOT TOUCH THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE ADDED TRADESHIPS > CLASS 3"

#define PIRATE_COASTGUARD 0 // type=int, values={0="Off"; 1="On"}, desc="Set to 1 to have pirate coastguard ships when smuggling."<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

As you can see above here...this is mine and I have set the class of ships for Pirates to be 3 instead of default 2..........also Coast Guard...was thinkin customs..geesh!! anyway they are para-military so they would have bigger ships or more military like ships. This allows these the use of a bigger class of ships in "<b>Your</b>" game. This sounds like your problem.....if you do not set this high enough those ships you were discussing have a very small chance of ever appearing in your game

Hopes this helps......

P.S. Where is me Rum And Grog and other small tokens of your appreciations....please throw Money as well

LJS: I don't think I understand, how your fix helps with ship availabilty. The pirate corvette is a class 2 and the privateer is a class three so both are in the default and only the privateer is in you change. My question is about the apparent scarcity of the two vessels in the game.

I may be dense but I don't get it. Untill I do, no grog, no rum and defintlly no money <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Oh! and BTW the bigger ships have lower numbers. MOW is a 1, war tartane is a 7.

Well...now You might be on to something......

The way I understood it, is that the default setting of 2 say under pirates only allowed the first 2 classes or types of ships ( Luggers and maybe to Brigs and such ) which would be like 5th rates and under.......in order to get or allow the Pirates to use higher classes you had to increase the class size, but I understand this is like looking at it backwards or reversed. When I set it to 3 the Pirates started using Merchants and Pinnaces and such, or they seemed to use bigger ships types so I continued to set this every new game.....same with Caost Guards, but to be honest, everytime I sold contraband, I would save so I didnt get pummeled by 5 Ships that just materialized offshore and bugger up me good standings with nations....( aye tis cheatin I know, BUT it is not like I set me Character tew Level 35 or something...this would really be cheating!!! HEHEHEHE) so never really watched the changes to Coast Guard.

OKay....<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Oh! and BTW the bigger ships have lower numbers. MOW is a 1, war tartane is a 7.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

just found this.......that too me is the problem right there......

We look at the ships as the largest as Class 1...right........BUT I think....that what you enable is how high do you want the ships classes to go...... So if the settings are 2....the pirates only use the first 2 classes.....So anything rated 6 0r 5 0r maybe even 4......but never a 1.....If yu look at this your way, the Pirates by default would only ever use Class 2 ships like Battlewagons or 2nd Rates...get me

Hey this is only a theory Jason: but I may have been way off base here....

P.S. This was addlibbing at best.......<b><!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I may be dense but I don't get it. Until I do, no grog, no rum and defintlly no money
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--></b> and you Sir are definately not a dense person

LJS: If you leave the priate ship set to default that is 2, you will encounter pirate ships <b>up to class 2</b>. That is luggers to warships, figates and lineships. Not just class 2. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

That is deliberately done by Petros. The Pirate Corvette is set to <i>refShip.CanEncounter = false;</i> and <i>refShip.CanBuy = false;</i> in ships_init.c, so that you will not encounter her at sea, nor in shipyards. The only ways to get her are during the Nigel Blythe quest and the sink-the-English-pirate-for-the-French-governor quest.

The Privateer can be encountered on sea but only as pirate ship, because <i>refShip.Nation = PIRATE;</i>. She is also used by some quest characters.

I think this should answer your questions.

What should the US Heavy Frigate be named into? I should at least remove the US part. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Pieter,

Thanks for clearing that up. That makes sense Could tthose availabilites be tweaked?

With respect to the US Heavy Frigate some from the American colonial period would be. New England, Massachusetts, Boston, Providence. And one this subject, there is ship on the list named Ohio, which is not term that game into use in the US untill the late 18th century. It was not used as a ship name until the late 19th century. Virginia is another ship named for a US state, but that I think we can get away with since it was settled in 1607. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

Those availabilities can be changed in ships_init.c <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

<b>Regarding the US Heavy Frigate:</b> The American Built frigates were extremely popular among coilonial and French privateers but scoffed at by the Brittish (who called them Yankee Frigates) untill the US (once it was the US) started battering the English frigates with them mercilessly in the early to mid 1800's.

Their secret was that they emploied multiple keels set at odd angles which allowed them to carry much heavier, and a good deal more, guns then their Brittish counterparts without sacrificing speed or agility. They were developed by Colonial smugglers origionaly and later adopted by the US navy because ships of the line were far too expensive for the fledgling US navy to build in any quantity. I love the History Channel!

Given the time period, I think it would be better to call them "Yankee Frigates" and make them all pirate designed ships as these were the only people using them at the time. Also, they should be amped up to outclass the Super Frigate at least a bit. Maby 32 pounder compatable and MUCH stronger hulls then normal. The USS Constitution and the Constilation were of this design and the English during the war of 1812 were "flabbergasted" by the punnishment they could take. The Brittish press refused to even acknowledge them as frigates because of the bad run their own had against them, coining the terms "pocket battleships" and "petty liners" for them.

If you've seen "Master And Commander" (great movie but DEATH THE RUSSEL CROWE!!!) the <i>Phantom</i> ship they were chasing was of this design and they discuss some of these particulars as well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Oi!! Leave me mate Rusty alone! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Yeah, the <i>Acheron</i> was indeed typical of the US Navy, 1812 era, 44 gun frigate. Although the movie was set in 1805, O'Brian's book was set during the War of 1812. However, let's not forget that, although they were very powerful vessels, given an able adversary, they could be out fought, as Captain Broke commanding the 38 gun <i>HMS Shannon</i> did, defeating the 44 gun <i>Chesapeake</i> off Boston in 1812.

Cheers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

This game around 1600's to what mid 1600's put me right.

So that ship would not even be around then and if I remember from reading some where on forum it be unfair to add a ship in game that's not even part of the 1600's.
But that said if you did surely you would then have to tweak up the other ship's to make them more in keeping with 1800's. Would I be wrong or right ?. Just a thought.

My impression is that the origional game plays pretty fast and loose regarding the available ships and a lot of the added vessels ( the liners ) follow suit. Feel and atmosphere seem to rule the day on this one.

I want to change the starting date to the 1700's anyway. But I don't really care for 100% hostorical realism either. Fun's more important. And having the HMS Surprise as excellent model ingame is certainly fun! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
