ATi flickering videos with FSAA, solved on my machine.

Hi all,

I installed the latest Bink player from...
<a href="http://radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm" target="_blank">http://radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm</a>

The in game movies don't flicker anymore when FSAA is enabled. I'm thinking that perhaps some ATi related file wasn't included in the Pirates! install?

Anyway I just thought I'd pass this on, in case it helps anyone with the same problem.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ... I am actually quite happy now

Yarrr!!!

I guess Pirates comes with some older Bink library which you got replaced by installing the most recent player.

Damn, I hate Bink movies. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Whenever I had problems with in game movies, it was Bink. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dp_nogd.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ng" border="0" alt="dp_nogd.gif" />

I´ve got the newest Catalyst Drivers for my ATI 9600 XT Fireblade. No flickering or probs so far, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> I will download the most recent player if I get home from work. I hope it makes any difference to what I have now.

This is exactly what I did and in the order that I did them...

1) Uninstalled my drivers (I was using Omega's).
2) Used Driver Cleaner to get rid of any leftovers.
3) Downloaded and installed latest official drivers from ATi and launched Pirates! (Video's still flickered).
4) Downloaded and installed the latest Bink player.
5) Watched the 2 intro movies from the Pirates! folder with the Bink player.
6) Launched Pirates!, started a new character, and the flickering videos were gone (and are still gone when I test).
7) Incidently, I haven't had any random crashes since, and I haven't had to lower my Core/Memory speeds this time.

Pirates! is working perfectly for me... at last <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Well I just tried this and still no joy for me. I've done almost the same things. When the 4.12s came out I used the ATI utility to strip every thing and did a fresh installation due to problems with another game (Pacific Fighters). Still had flashing with this game.

I just loaded the RADTOOLS from the site you linked. Using the RAD player I can play the bik files fine with my current video settings. Once they are attempted to run from within Pirates! thats when the problems start. What is interesting is that the ATI logo is a BINK file and it runs fine. It is the PiratesOpening1.bik and PiratesOpening2.bik files that I have problems with. I get this horrible white flashing. Good thing I'm not epileptic or I'd be having siesures! I do not know if the sword fight or dancing are affected as I have not bothered to proceed further.

My conlcusion . . since RAD plays these fine . . the problem is with the game.

I used to have all kinds of problems in games. On message boards I always see technical problems with games. And you know what? They are always Radeon cards. My list of problems and the amount of research I have conducted the last few years has been quite impressive.

Needless to say I bought a Geforce 6800 a couple months ago and I have had no more problems anymore.

The most common ATI Radoen problem is the hideous lopp error /VPU recover error in Windows XP.

I honestly dont know how they stay in business. Dont get me started with their 3rd party crap, Sapphire...yuck.

Aye Donjn, agree wid ye thar mate,go tew de POTC tecnical forum an check de thread on ATI card problems wid drivers, many mates had de same problem wid play'n POTC,personally fer meself,I'v always used GF cards wid Nvidia drivers always werked well fer POTC an SMP <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Well . . I AM a former NVIDIA user and unfortunately it doesnt have as nice a TV capture capability as the All In Wonder series does. NIVIDA has its own quirks and problems. Their just different.

I dont want this to turn into a bitching thread. I'd rather have this find a damned solution to the problem. Hengist had a good idea about the BINK drivers. It just didnt fly on my system. I'm hoping he's still viewing this board and will see this thread and it might joggle a brain cell of something else he might have done at the same time.

I was looking at the settings within BINK and there didnt seem to be too much we can do. Most of it seems to be automatic. I also couldnt duplicate the FULL SCREEN that we get with the game. All I could view was in a window. And as I said . . with the BINK player it looked fine. When the game plays it theres that white flashing. It reminds me of an old time movie projector where the frames are separated.

But MUCH MORE ANNOYING <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

1. Sell your Radoen on Ebay.
2. Buy a Geforce 6800 or the lower priced 6600
3. See all problems go away

I am just trying to help someone thats all.

Last year I ran into someone on a board who gave me the advice to just buy a Geforce.. I laughed and thought "what an Nvida fanboy". Then I thought about taking their advice. I did, and it paid off. I am just trying to save poeple some time playing settings, drivers, `re-install` of drivers, XP problems etc.

You dont have to be a jerk about it though.

"Got problems with a game? Buy a new card."
Might be helpful if the guy in question actually has some ancient hardware, but in this case? I just think it's pointless to repetitively tell people to spend money on the hardware <i>you</i> favor. But if you really think you're helpful, I didn't say nothing...

I appreciate the info Donjn . . . but I'm not looking to change cards right now. Though when I got my ATI a year and a half ago NVIDIA had NO card with TV Capture capability. That has apparently changed.

This game does seem to have an AA problem. If it were driver/card related running the BINK files alone would have caused the same anomaly. Since they seem to run fine . . and only puke when running from in the game . . it would seem that there is some layer that is being applied by the game that is interfering.

At least thats my take on it . . .
