Assign Officers to Captured ships

I'm not sure if this is a bug or some new feature that I'm not understanding.

I've only tried to capture three ships so far. Every time I've tried to "Assign Officer" to put one of my boys in charge a message would appear saying something along the lines of "You need to be level 5 to start a fleet".

I figured, well, I'm just starting out, maybe I need more experience to do this. I wasn't level 5 yet.

The next time I was level 5, but none of my officers were. So I figured I needed to level them up first.

This final time, I was level 8/9 and my two officers were over level 5 and I still can't take the ship.

What gives?
 
I think it's supposed to be a leadership skill of 5 that you need to command a fleet. What was your leadership at that point?
 
Did you ever get a message about your skill when commanding a fleet? Do your captains seem to captain their ships properly?
 
It's possible to turn that mod off and never get any messages. That's how I've got my game set up.

I'm using 14 alpha 9, I believe. I only have leadership of 4, but I'm almost to 5, so as soon as I level that up I'll try again.


I just ran into another annoying problem. I can't use the "Use Item" selection. I was just in a fight in the jungle and my health is down pretty low. I haven't used the new bandages (new to me at least) and I thought I'd give it a try. Every time I select "Use Item" the game crashes. I know that earlier in the game I could select "Use Item" without crashing. I'm not sure what has changed.

So, in case I'm never able to use them, what does a bandage do? Also, what does that cauterizing thing do?

PS: I am using build 14 alpha 9 patch 3, if that helps. In fact, I'm not sure where to get newer versions.
 
The items restore health. Here are the numbers for various healing items:

For example, the cauterization kit will restore 90 health.

If I get the latest Alpha, will my saved games still work?
 
Also, now that I've taken over a ship and I have the former captain in my cargo hold, how do I ransom him? When I go through my passenger list and see the him, there is a line that says Ransom: 4322 or whatever. But there isn't a button or anything to press.
 
To Ransom a Prisoner for (B14 9.5A) you would go down to your cargo hold and talk to the prisoner...
 
And hope he's in the mood to be ransomed. You need to be in a port of the nation he's from, but even then usually it doesn't work.
Alpha 9.5 indeed does require a new game. But since we won't be releasing any other updates for a while, that'll be the last time you have to start a new game for that while. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
