Another Fine Mesh...

First off, Happy Birthday William Shakespeare! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

Second off, Thank you, yet again, Inez Dias for creating TOOL, and also for providing it to all of us! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

For reasons beyond understanding, I decided to give Blender a try to see what I could accomplish with editing a POTC model. I have taken this about as far as I can, and so I've decided to release this model on the FTP, in a file named "Another Fine Mesh" (pun intended). I'm hoping that people can give the model a try and provide me with some helpful feedback. (Especially with regards to getting the model to line up properly.)

I've also decided to name the model Skull, after our dear old Snakebite brewing recidivist, because I rather imagine that this is what Skull actually looks like in real life.

I like the idea of this model because it resembles more of what I think a pirate captain would look like, but be warned in advance; the hands do not function properly, and the lower jaw does strange things at times. I still think it makes a good players model, though! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

Let me know what you think...

Hi,
Looks good ,
just needs the arms sorting out , like you said.

I'll download it as soon as you put it on FTP.

damski.

Better still , swap outfits with one of your officers till you get your screenshot.

Just hope he dosen't get killed while you get your shot.

was that a pun? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

SIR CHRISTOPHER MINGS!!! How VERY NICE INDEED to see you posting on the forum again. And even with a new model for us to play with! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

We need to put him in a quest somewhere. Any thoughts? Would be cool if there'd be a Skull character in the game. Especially since there's already a reference to a character named Skull, which you put in. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Ahoy and thanks for the kind remarks! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> but I have to remedy something I left out of my first post; the texture for the coat and body on the Skull model was originally created by Verruckt, I "borrowed" it, and where I don't think he'll mind me doing that, it was really very wrong of me not to point out that one of the better features of the model is actually his work. Maybe he'll be mollified if I send him some of the Ol' Snakebite I "borrowed" from Skull... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerbz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nerbz" border="0" alt="nerbz.gif" /> (what the heck is wrong with the whistling smiley?)

Chris Roupe', I've been trying to catch up on what's going on with the site and have to say I'm a great admirer of your work. Damski62 is right, I just take screenshots in game, either in first or third person, by pressing F8, after I have assigned the texture to one of my officers. The screenshots windup in the Pirates of the Caribbean folder, titled Seadogs... , and I use them to make the portraits for the various screens. Let us know if this isn't clear or you have any questions about it. I've always found this helpful to so I can see if the model actually looks right in the game or not.

Morgan, I think Damski62's remark was less of a pun and more of a play on words, but it could certainly be considered a shooting irony. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Thomas the Terror, Thanks and ever thanks! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" /> Truth be told, I was hoping you would see the model and feel an irresistible compulsion to retexure it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ty" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />

Pieter! Very nice to see you as well! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> I think any quest involving Skull would have to include smuggling rum, exploding things, and the Quebradas Costillas brothel. With those elements I can't see how we could go wrong! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" />

I really want to retexturate it, maybe it is an idea for a more evolved bartolomeu o portugues? But then I will use the texture of Damski62 as a base <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Ofcourse I can also make another skin for it. But first of all, it would be better if the model is properly fixed.

Would be a fun quest, by the sound of it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Indeed the whistling smiley is bugged. Not sure what's going on really. It used to work, then suddenly some smileys got messed up. This also includes the devil smiley. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />:
I could probably fix it by changing the letter combination used for them. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Ah yes, the dreaded "chin" bug. Well, not exactly a bug, but more of the flaw in the exporting method. Those of you who have seen my Jack in coat and hat will surely recognize all the symptoms and resulting flaws.

<b>Sir Christopher Mings</b>, the lower jaw of your model behaves in this way because it gets attached to the torso bones, instead of head bones. Sadly, the only way I could get entire head to get attached to the head bones was to increase the size of the model, and thus raising all head's vertexes beyond the point where they get assigned to the torso animations. The same applies to the arms - they aren't in the right position, and thus get assigned to the bones incorrectly.

I haven't done enough experiments to determine whether moving head forward or backwards (or maybe moving just his jaw) would solve this problem without the need to increase the size of the character.

Thanks Kazeite! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I've been staring at my computer screen, with a confused look on my face, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":huh" border="0" alt="huh.gif" /> for so long that I figured it was time to check in with the PA community for a reality check.

In the back of my head I've always figured that there's some Akella new-hire out there that imports models one hundred times a day, while I'm trying to figure out how to do it correctly once! There's got to be a fairly simple way to do this, and thanks to checking in with the site I now feel like sitting in front of my computer with a confused look on my face until I figure out what it is! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

I have to admit though, I still get a kick out of watching the jaw in the animation cycle in TOOL, and when the character is assigned as an officer in game I'm halfway waiting for him to spit out a big luggie!

Indeed the people at Akella probably DO know how to do this right. We ought to ask them how to.

Hi,
I've managed to fix the head, that now works a should, As for the arms I've juggled about with just about every setting possible but cannot sort that problem out.

damski.

Better is still better. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
