and the funny part...?

gothmog

Landlubber
hello fellows!

first of all... the game is quite boring, isn't it? while its some fun for the first few hours i just realize that its doing the same things over and over again. hmm... most probably i just didn't realize that thats what its all about being pirate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

still, i got a question or two for you buccaneers our there:

- whats the idea of taking along each an every ship i conquered (besides having more storage room and the choice to sell them later on)? its kind of weird gathering ships to sell them again.

- anyone ever tried making money with trading? it seems so darn boooring...

- whats the money for that i get as my share after dividing loot? i mean, heck, what for do i play on a higher difficulty (30 %) if I can do no bloody thing with the money i get???

- wheres the real fun of this game hiding? (might be i just didn't figure that out yet) :)

- why did I buy this game?

thanks for some insights, pals!

Where's the fun? Dancing on swashbuckler level, of course!

this will at least help me to bridge the time until GuildWars is released, sometimes end of april (i hope)..

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> gothmog. I am sorry you do not find Pirates enjoyable. It does seem some people were expecting a bit more when they purchased the game. It is basically a remake of a classic with a few extras thrown in. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> If you were expecting it to be an RPG or a very detailed historical Pirate game I can see where you would be let down. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> But, to take a shot at your questions.

Well, I actually will grab every Large ship with a cargo capacity of 120 or more. This allows me to stay out plundering longer with fewer visits back to a friendly town to sale off the goods. As I am sure you have noticed, sailing in some directions can take a pretty long time. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> So, grabbing the large ships allows you to stay out longer and gather more "booty", thereby making each return trip back to town that much more profitable. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Yes! I have. This can be a very enjoyable endeavor. What I have tried is, after taking over a town and installing a Governor, I will then make it a priority to increase the size and the wealth of the city. This does two things, it gives me a new, closer trading location that was formerly in enemy territory and it increases the size of the garrison. Of course you want the city to be able to withstand attacks. Another fun part is sailing to the settlements getting new Gov's to escort to your new city and then stopping by a Jesuit Mission to get some new immigrants. Also, do not forget to stop by a settlement and get a "new strain of seeds" to deliver to your town. Buidling up a city through trade can be very fun and intense at times, especially when you are 3 days away and you see an invasion force headed towards your city. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

The money counts towards you final game score. Other than that it can be used as a measure of how well you have done. Playing on a higher difficulty does provide a higher challenge and it also provides a greater personal challenge for the player. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I do believe the best games I have had are when I have a self made goal while playing the game. For example, one game my goal will be to completly wipe the Spanish off the map, another game I will take a city deep in Spanish territory and try to get it to prosper all the while keeping the Spanish from taking it back. Ha, try this some time.. play the entire game as a true pirate, attacking every nation and only using the Pirate Havens and Indian Villages to resupply/recruit and repair. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> This is MOST challenging.

I would think you purchased it to have a fond trip down memory lane, or to enjoy some light pirate activity. I agree this game could have been so much more, but, I went into this knowing it was a remake of the original and I am happy with my purchase. This remake was made for todays market realities, i.e., it was made for the broadest spectrum of players as possible, to increase sales. Hence no blood, no gore, no one even dies. hehe. But if you use your imagination and impose your own goals all the tools are in the game to make it very enjoyable.

I hope these ideas, suggestions will allow you to enjoy the game a tad bit more. It truly can be very addictive and fun to play.

Aye mate, it tooK a while te grow on me after play'n SeaDogs an POTC,it was miss'n sump'n than after play'n it a while I'd be think'n it was jest me <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> It is a great game <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

hi GIJoe,

Thanks for your extensive reply! I'll heed your tips! I actually caught myself playing 5 hours in a row yesterday and it took brute force of my girlfriend ("i'm fugginnn nacked and got no sheet to warm me bodee!") to get me to take a break <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

And yes, you're right, i bought the title because I knew Pirates from old Atari and Amiga times. Most probably it was just the name of the game and the name of the developer (Atari) that attracted me <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Although I'm fully aware atari times are gone..

and yes again, i didn't expect the complexity of BG, M&M and old Wizardry games, but it could have been a bit more diverse.

kind rgds,
gothmog

5 Hours.. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Time can really slip away if you throw in a little RPG, especially when there is just one more ship to take or town to ransack..

oh and do not forget that settlement over there, the mayor of that one has just been appointed Gov at the last town you took over. If you are being hassled overly much by the enemy, perhaps a quick visit to a Jesuit Mission to see if they will intervene on your behalf. Sometimes they can get the hostile nation to drop the bounty on your head. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Oh my, that last town over there is not dioing so well economically, I guess I should sail over to a settlement that has a special strain of seed and return them to the town, this will increase the harvests and cause the economy to grow.

I think you get the picture.. Have fun.

Aye mates,if yer not carefull ,ye could end up chase'n yer own tail,get next te nuth'n done before ye knows it yer sitt'n in a rocker wunder'n whar all yer loot went te <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
