ALT+TAB crash

The name of topic said it all.
It is really annoying to exit the game and start it over if i need something to do in Win

Open the <i>engine.ini</i> file and set <i>full_screen = 0</i> and set <i>screen_x</i> and <i>screen_y</i> to your desktop resolution.
That will make your game run in windowed mode, but it'll still look fullscreen. And then you can nicely Alt+Tab out of the game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
The above works for PotC and would probably work for CoAS too.

Just the way it is, I suppose.
If you run the setup, you can choose between fullscreen and windowed mode. The game will still crash on my PC even in windowed mode when pressing alt+tab, while it doesnt with others. Try it.

Or....use Start - Program - Playlogic - Age of Pirates 2 - Config to set fullscreen on/off. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

ps: the first Pirate-Emoticons is wrong, it shows me: <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />o)

If you just set fullscreen off, you'll probably end up with the game appearing in a window smaller than your regular computer screen though. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
That smiley problem has been like that for a LONG time. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Thanks lads. I'll try when i get home, now i'm on my job, "working" <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

Aye, use Config as Caduyn be statin' above:

1) Turn full screen off. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

2) Set game window resolution to the same values as your monitor screen resolution. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Result: Yer screen LOOKS fullscreen and Alt-Tab works without crashin'! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

One addition: The PotC Config.exe does not support all possible desktop resolutions, I think. Might be the same for CoAS.
Regular resolutions like 1024x768 wouldn't be a problem, but I'm not so sure about widescreen ones.

The game will run in widescreen resolutions, but you have to set them manually by editing the .ini file directly.

But will it actually <i>be</i> widescreen? As opposed to a 4:3 stretched to fit? Because it can't handle 5:4, I have to run it in 1280*960 on my 1280*1024 screen, leaving strips of my desktop showing on the top and bottom, otherwise it just stretches the graphics to fit, making everything look deformed.

No, as it stands, it would NOT be properly wide screen, but stretched to fit. But I'd be willing to bet that with the correct changes to some of the camera files, we might be able to get it to display correctly on WS systems.

I'll post more on this once I've had a chance to investigate!

I've been playing PotC in a widescreen resolution on my laptop and it looks like the 3D game world itself is NOT stretched.
It's just the interfaces that are stretched. But that is not surprising and doesn't really matter that much anyway.

I play it in windowed mode at 1440x900 on my desktop with Vista. And it works marvelous.
hardly ever any crashes. I can play for days without a single one.

Ofc. It does crash on my rig also. But as I said. it's often 2-3 days in between. And it usually happens when either boarding a ship, or left clicking to chat with with someone to soon after saving. We're talking seconds or milliseconds.

Hey. I'm Impatient, Got ADHD. And I'm also an old school gamer, breastfeed "Save Early, Save Often, " from Sierra. So what did you expect?
You have no idea just how often I save (and I'm not talking about quicksave, that button I press like almost every 10 sec ;P)

So I kinda get why it crashes then. And I'm betting the autosave before boarding feature is the reason for the other crash.

But I'm getting off track here. I only wanted to say. COAS in widescreen works fine. But it's "Vert -" sadly, and not "Hor +" (also called NATIVE widescreen support. where you actually see more than with a 4:3 screen. kinda like if your installing a bigger window in your house. you then see more of what's outside)

"Vert -" it reduces the screen vertically to fit your widescreen resolution. Meaning you see LESS of the screen, than you would with a 4:3 monitor (kinda like just taping a 16:10 frame infront of your 4:3 TV) .
But seeing as I've yet to find a single monitor or gfx card that actually emulates 4:3 correctly on a widescreen monitor. I choose to loose a little bit of the upper and lower part, than having everybody look like stick ppl.

Looks more like 3:3 than 4:3 if you ask me. Which moron managed to make that blunder? Or even a better question. Why on earth haven't it been fixed? It's not like they haven't noticed yet. I mean. the expensive widescreen TV's managed to get the aspect-ratio correct (Yes, this applies to widescreen TV's too). So it's not like they haven't noticed. So WHY damn it, WHY can't they just apply that system to all new monitors and TV's they build?

I'm guessing one of these reasons:

1. Only the techs that created the system for the expensive ones noticed it. And the rest are actually clueless.
2. Everybody is clueless, and the only reason it's fixed in the expensive widescreen Monitors and TV's is just a fluke,
caused by using a different, more expensive component that wasn't designed by a moron.
3. Or... We're all being F#%ked over... Again.. And it's designed that way to make ppl buy the expensive stuff.

Dunno which one it is. But if it's nr.3. Well. Mission accomplished. Next time I'm shopping for a TV or monitor. I'm not going for the cheap stuff.

heh. Going off track again.. Well I just wanted to add that even though it's only Vert - . It still quite nice. only problem is with the interface. like buttons, menu's and profile pictures etc. It gets stretched. On a 16:10 monitor, I hardly notice. actually, I don't anymore. I had to double-check in the game to see if it was stretched or not, and it was. Slightly. On a 16:9 monitor it's going to be worse, and it's probably going to annoy the hell out of you.

So. there you have it. Don't think I've left anything out.
