A First Impression from William

Pirate Legend
There is no feeling like the first time you get a game you'd been waiting to try out. The whole world stops - The cell phone gets turned off, shades get shut in hopes of a prying eye at the door hoping you'll answer it will quickly get the feeling you're not at home and leave you to your new found passion of being a swashbuckler in search of fortune and glory!

My first thought on this game is, I cannot believe how much it acts like a `self-contained` world. Within five minutes of starting up the game, i was in Port Royale (your English starting port) sailing up to Santiago to intercept a barque per the Governor's instructions. As I made my way up (and have quickly intercepted and dispatched of the ship) Out from Santiago comes 3 Fast Galleons - labeled "Invasion Fleet", sailing towards Port Royale!
Not to have my home ransacked, I quickly sailed into battle on my sloop, firing my cannons at sailing full sails to smash my ship into theres and begin an epic sword fight. I quickly took over each ship in the Invasion Fleet, and sailed back towards Port Royale for my first promotion!

Later on in the game, I sailed right past a Dutch Invasion Fleet who took over a Spanish town, and later watched as another one took over St. Kitts! This was incredible - You are not the only one out there trying to build an empire this time. Want to effect a town's economy? Begin sinking trade vessels and smuggler's on route to a specific town. Quickly a town can go from a Wealthy Capital to a Poor Colony in no time. Want to cause unrest and uproar? Every so often a new governor will be dispatched to a town. When the Governor doesn't arrive the people become uneasy. Now is the perfect time to sail try to take over the town!

Even the Indians play a role in this game. Watch as a canoe of Indian raiders try to attack colonies, or sail to a settlement to meet with them or get a mission. There are even Jesuit settlements for which you can sail to and receive escort missions.

The graphics are incredible and run quite smooth on my machine. While the people have a somewhat "cartoonish" look to them, it is hardly something that will keep you on the fence the first time you get into a sword fight with a veteran Spaniard who's skills at the blade can keep draw out your swordfight and keep you in suspense! Something else to acknowledge about the look and feel of everything in the game is how it draws you into this little world known as Sid Meier's Pirates. You become completely hooked on what is going on, and at rediscovering fame and fortune. The Governor's look slightly pompous, the barmaids ... er .... wenchy, and the Spaniard's - EVIL SPANIARDS!

This is a game that can keep you entertained for hours and hours at a time mates. I put the CD in at 4:00pm yesterday and wished I would've set an alarm clock to tell me when to go to bed. The time was quickly midnight and I have a 5am `wake-up` call to get to work!

My First Impression of Sid Meier's Pirates! : This is truly a remake of a classic and a welcomed one at that. `Pre-order` it now and salivate in awe of this incredible masterpiece. Break up with your girlfriends, file temporary separation papers from your wives, take a sabbatical from work and tell your school or university that you never needed their toilet paper anyway - and tell everyone that your searching for fame, fortune and glory!

I didn`t read everything. I don`t wanna get too spoiled <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" /> . So thnx one more time <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

So they gave you people a permission to reveal small tidbits to us impatient `pirate-wannabes`?

Sounds good. Thanks for the info. It seems that I made the decision now to go can place the `pre-order`. Thus far, I was rather doubtful about it, but you persuaded me!

BTW: I'd also like to learn about your computer configuration. Do you happen to have any idea if the test group people are also trying the game on laptops? Is there a way to avoid using the numeric keypad (that are hard to access in laptops) by using the mouse or some other methods? I noticed that the land battle sequences in the videos required the use of 'directional keys', so that's why I'm asking about the mouse...

Well, I decided to speak up a bit. I'm not releasing anything anyone didn't know, just reasserting it because I know everyone is dying to hear from someone who played the original Pirates! just how good this remake is.

I hopefully will be doing a more thorough one for the main site. THAT I do have to get permission from Jeff at ATARI on. Want to keep everything groovy. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I am currently playing the beta on a laptop. A beefy laptop, but a laptop. Yes, it requires a numerical keypad, and currently has limited support with the mouse, but mainly for sailing things I noticed. The land based battle sequence and the swordfight utilize the numerical keypad. ... Just to note, I DID go out and by an adapter for my keyboard and mouse to plug into my laptop, since they are PS2 and my `thin-client` only takes USB ... But it IS worth it! It was ten bucks for a great big smile on my face the very next day and the want to go home and play it again tonight.

I don't know what the plans are for the hardware specifications, or what the minimals will be just yet. I am sure when we get close to the end of beta they will have a designation on what will and what won't work.

Hats off to Atari, Firaxis and Sid Meier. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />

Oh and if you `pre-order` do it through the link on the main page! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

*Heads off to sea*

I'm right behind ya mate!!!! Who needs sleep!? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

I'll second what William and Civ said. This will certainly wind up as one of the best regarded games in history - just like the original.

However, I'll let William risk his hide by posting more in depth info <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Aside from "This game is great! Can't say more", I'm keepin' me trap shut!

that william share some things about the demo just have to good for the game cause it increase the intrest on t´he board.

If we wouldnt hear a word during the whole betatesting then we would not be excited when game is released.

I certainly understand that William's comments go a long way to increase enthusiasm and anticipation, and I certainly don't condemn him for doing it. It's just that I am too cowardly a pirate to risk violating the `Non-Disclosure` Agreement that we all have to agree to as beta testers.

And I certainly agree that if all of us testers kind of disappeared from these boards while we tested, that things would die down quite a bit. I can say though, that for me, it's hard to read some of the public posts, knowing that I can answer the question or remove someone's concerns by answering the post. I want you all to see what I have seen and show you all the game. You would be so happy! And I know that if those are the only kind of posts that you guys read, eventually you get bored with them. But for now, I'll leave the details to Jeff <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> *cues the Jeff intro music!*

<snicker> I haven't been sleeping much, either. Between the game and bug reports, I've been pretty busy!

YES, Bug Reports... Lest you all think we're just gaming our fingers off, we ARE (or should be) making bug reports.

It amazes me that the top reporters have over 100 points - I haven't gotten ONE yet, LOL! But I got my disk a bit late... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />

This IS fun!!! You're going to love the game, I think... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-SirDrago`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(SirDrago)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I´m just curious. With what do they threaten you if you brake the NDA?[/quote]

Aside from not being able to participate in any beta they have, they can also take you to court fore more serious actions someone might do.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->smash my ship into theres and begin an epic sword fight<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
thanks for you impressions but this doesn't sound right. something's fishy when a rookie can attack an invasion fleet of three galleons with a sloop and win. first, they out gun you 10 to 1 and if the results of a boarding attempt is based on number of sailors and experience, there's no way you'd have more sailors and more experience. and don't tell you you `zig-zagged` around and hit them all with grapeshot and wittled down their crew before they blew you out of the water. i think you're still mesmerized <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

BTW, i was born in Tustin...

Ahem, I was playing on the Apprentice level on the first test and I will leave it at that. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> Swashbuckler kicks your ass! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

So far, haven't said anything out of context and like I said - I won't saying anything else until I get a solid OK from Jeff. Nothing I have said has been anything different from E3. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

One question that arose yesterday while playing the original: Are the ships still able to turn on a coin (one click to turn 45 degrees) or is the sailing handling improved on that? I mean, it is a nice thing to be able to outmaneuvre a pinnace with a galleon, but it seems strange, though.

Okay mates, ruling is out:

Jeff ok'd the writing of an article. I'll be submitting it to him Monday so we'll see what gets the scissors. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
