32 gun frigate WIP

Great job with the textures, I like the dark brown especially.

Morgan, she looks more, well, real, than the ships currently in PotC, she could easily take the place of the Corvette (which is, really, a light, 6th-rate frigate). Of course, I don´t know how the model looks ingame next to other ships.

you mean second rate. we already knew that the corvette is actually a frigate, and we plan to chancge that in the future. this ship could be the earlier version of the 'corvette', for the earlier periods. though it does look pretty 18th century, actually. i'd prefer having it alongside the stock game corvette. although it would of course be really nice if the original corvette could be improved in detail so it fits in better.

I wouldn't want to remove the original game corvette's from the game. That would give us a smaller total amount of ship models and there's no need for that, is there? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

<!--QuoteBegin-Morgan Terror+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Morgan Terror)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->you mean second rate.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Wouldn´t a second rate be a SoL with 90-98 guns? AFAIK a sixth rate is a small ("jackass" <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> ) frigate with 20-28 cannons, while the Boston would have been considered as fifth rate ( 32-40 guns)

you're probably right. i'm not that very familiar with the ratings, though i think second rate was 70 to 100, now i think of it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

the reason why i'd rather replace the old ship is because of their relatively low detail. with all these highly detailed ships being made, the old ships just look really wierd. if the original model would be kept, but updated to greater detail, i don't think that many changes to the skins would be required either.

Sorry to be a smartass, but a ship with 70 guns would be a thirth rate <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

And I ´m afraid that adding details to the stock PotC models (e.g. adding lines to the hull for a less blocky look) doesn´t work, you would have to re-uvmap and re-texture all the ships that are currently ingame. So making new, relatively low poly standard models from scratch would be a better choice, imo.

maybe your ratings are from a different period. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> though i wouldn't really know better.

i was just throwing in a random suggestion, actually. heck, the more ships, the better. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Bava's right, a ship classified as a Third Rate would be anything sporting between 64 and 80 guns, or at least according to the British Royal Navy. Personally, I would love to see more Third and Fourth Raters, especially a proper 74-gunner and even a 64-gunner a la Nelson's Agamemnon. I believe such a ship was being worked on quite a while ago by Admiral Koch (?), but never got past the modeling stage...I think such a ship would be a great addition at some point in time. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Nevertheless, I haven't gotten the chance to give my opinion on the Boston, so here it is. Great work, Bava! It looks incredible...can't wait to see it in-game under a full set of sails! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />

Thanks, mate <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And a detailed thirth or fourth rate model would indeed be awesome, though I´d prefer one of the earlier HMS Centurions or the Antilope. But one thing´s for sure: I´ll never model a ship over 50 cannons, cutting out all the portholes is a nightmare <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

EDIT:

<img src="http://img31.picoodle.com/img/img31/4/2/15/f_1m_f13d64c.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Added a few things to the deck, should improve the atmosphere a bit. Most of the textures are placeholders until I´ve made more detailed versions.

NICE <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

things like that make battles a lot more interesting too. for instance, on the bermuda sloop, i started to notice funny things like my bunk being shot in half, a cannonball going straight into the kitchen chimney, the face of the painting going 'missing', things like that.

This just brings a tear to my eye, outstanding!!!! I am glad the texturing is going much easyer for you now. the deck boat looks sweet. is it from the chapman draughts?? but this does bring something to mind about the path model. When you have all items placed on the deck. you will need to make a 3d model of only the deck, this is only used for the camera so when you in deck mode, you can move around. let me know when you will be ready to make the Path model. there are some things you will need to do. I will need to explain it to you. there is no rush on this. I just wanted to tell you before I forgot and sprung it on you at the last minute. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />.

Thanks, Inzane <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hm, the slide for the capstan ropes under the forecastle, the cannons, some frames at the inside of the hull and the fittings for the masts are the only things I haven´t added yet, but it could be that I have to change the deck layout a bit ( it seems that I misinterpreted the plan for the quarter deck <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" /> ). And I have to make way more detailed textures for all the elements of the deck or they´ll look like crap ingame^^ So creating the path model is still at least a month away <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

still looks magnificent, no matter what you say that's bad about it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Excellent work. Can't wait to blow her out of the water <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I would be interested in seeing some wireframes too (just out of curiosity.). You use Blender right? Tried it once but it's so alien to 3DSmax that I gave up quite quickly.

Thanks, a nice comment by a fellow shipwright is always appreciated.

Here´s a wireframe of the hull (its the only one I´m having at hand right now)
If you want to see certain sections of the ship, please tell me and I´ll see if I can get some ss and upload them at the weekend. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<img src="http://img37.picoodle.com/img/img37/4/2/21/f_wireframe1m_102b4d1.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

And yes, I´m using blender, can´t compare it to other 3d programs as its the only one I´ve tried so far and getting used to it is indeed difficult, but once I understood the logic of t he UI, its very comfortable to work with.

EDIT: He, found another one in my thread in the temp forum^^

<img src="http://img31.picoodle.com/img/img31/4/1/28/f_Bostonsternm_d8c2afe.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Its a rather old pic, I changed the layout of the stern area a bit to get a smoother transition between the hull the tuck (?).

I did, couple o´years ago. Gave my copy to a friend of mine, but never got it back <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Have you always used the Commodore John Paul Jones name? I recall playing into the late night with a chap by that name. could that be you??
