PotC Build Mod Ship Cleanup

For most people with newer Windows versions -me included- the GM Viewer simply refuses to display textures on character models.
Works fine on any other types of models though. :modding

Note that quest characters' ships are not influenced by the periods code in ships_init.c.
If we want those to be period-correct, we've got to change the characters' ships manually ourselves.

It is probably a Carrack. But it might be a Light Fluyt. I like both ships. They recently got cabins. :ty
 
it's REALLY tiny, about lugger-sized. my guess is that it's the carrack, even though it's technically a caravel. carracks are WAY bigger. in fact, a carrack is just a really big caravel, about the size of a galleon, but with a 3:1 length:width ratio instead of a galleon's 4:1. i love the little ship, but it doesn't belong in 1690.
 
A carrack is almost frigate sized. It's a class 5 merchant ship that can hold as much cargo as an average pinnace.
Could it be a class 6 light fluyt like fluyt4?
 
it's caravol 1. (no typo) it's not very obvious from the picture though, far more so from the side.
 
....frikkin' confusing ship namings. still not a carrack though. but yeah, what would you call it otherwise?
 
Well it won't matter as much what the names are, once the interface screenshots project is done. :dance
 
Can one of you upload the small ship detail GM/tga.tx files such as the dolphin, cannons, man, anchors etc.? because I have the group ones you all made such as "Deck" but not the individual ones.

So now that Patch 7 is out there, how about we get started on cleaning this up for real?

Some thoughts of mine based on the latest cleanup list:

bermsloop263 - Do we really want to lose this? If so, would we want to lose this one (where the swivels fire) or the other one (where they don't)?

Brig_20_Gun1_18 - What if we keep this, but make her use the schooner3_44 texture? That way, we'd keep the custom rigging but not have her use a stock game texture. Then we can lose the schooner3_44 altogether.

Do we want to keep any Cutters for variation? If so, I reckon we should definitely keep Cutter2; I like that one, Cutter3_18 can be dropped for sure and Cutter1 has a texture similar to the Lugger1.
 
For the Bermsloop, I'd say we should keep the one which doesn't fire the swivels.
After all, the one which does fire them is a Vanderdecken exclusive because it's slightly 'overpowered', right?
Either way, that ship needs a major texture upgrade. The nameplate needs removing, and the deck, guns and hull could do with some improvements.

That brig doesn't use the same hull model as schooner3_44... or anything which is based on Schooner2.
It uses the Schooner1 hull, and I don't think there are any different textures for that ship, which is unusual at this stage.
So either we make a new Schooner1-based texture, or use a Schooner2 hull with an existing texture.

I'd say we keep Cutter2 for sure, but maybe also keep Cutter3_18 just for variety's sake. The texture is plain and boring, but it's just a cutter, so it doesn't really matter.

Anyway, we'll be needing to update the clean-up list for the latest Patch 7 ships, and those we'd like to port for Beta 2.

Alright then; let's keep the regular and lose the Vanderdecken one.
And if anyone ever wants to improve the texture, that would be welcome too. But it's not a priority issue.

AGH! Indeed the models aren't exactly the same. ALMOST, yes, but they've got different stern lanterns.
We can still swap the textures around though. Using the schooner3_44 hull model and texture with the rigging of Brig_20_Gun1_18 would require just swapping out the locators between the models and we'd be all set for that.

Not really. Any ship that is not on the list is a new custom high-detail ship that we wouldn't want to drop anyway... :wp
 
BTW: As part of the ship cleanup, I want to give all nation-specific ship models their appropriate folder model names, eg. "FR_" for all French ships and "NL_" for the Dutch ones.
That'd be easier for future reference, I think.
