I'm a curious to know what you people do when you start a new game.

- do you guys go on a trading spree, at first to make a lot of money
- do you guys go on a fencing spree <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" /> , at first to lv up
- do you guys go on a mission spree <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thpirateshipff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":piratesahoy!" border="0" alt="thpirateshipff.gif" /> , to gain fame and glory
- do you guys follow the quest book to the letter <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" /> and make your way thru money and experience as you progress

Those are just examples.

So, what it would be?

Cheers, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Smuggling.....in a word. Ebony to any english settlements. Buy ships with large cargo space!!!!

Then follow some quests.....try to find a good place for a pirate hideout Woot!!!!

I usually follow whatever main quest I'm playing, though I haven't serious PLAYED for YEARS! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

First thing I do after dismissing Malcolm is check all the chests on my ship deck (can't go belowdecks yet), then hit Oxbay. I check the two random locators and the chest at the port. Then I go into Oxbay and check the two random locators there and the barrels outside the shipyard. By this time I have a few items to sell if necessary. Sometimes I take the cutlasses out of the weapons locker and sell them. I generally ignore the tutorial, preferring to do things myself.

I check all the merchants for commerce enhancing items first. Then I start selling stuff, either to the store or to Gregor Samsa, as they pay more than the street merchants. I sell my cargo. By this time I have some money. I buy items to enhance luck first.

I start talking to everyone in town to get leadership and luck up. Eventually I go make a couple runs through my ship checking all the chests.

Once I have a reasonable amount of gold I look for a decent weapon and possibly silver armor, and go into the dungeon. Several times. This usually gets me enough to buy everything I need that's available in town. I don't bother with getting more crew, usually, or repairing my ship, as I'd prefer to upgrade to a schooner before leaving port. Sometimes there are no good ships available and I have to hire crew and repair my lugger and use that. I put whatever spare weapons I have in the weapons locker.

When I'm all set, I buy gold and silver to take to Grenada, where I'll buy cinnamon for Jamaica or sailcloth for Cayman where I can buy sandal for Jamaica. Lots of sailing and trading. I prefer to have an officer or two before I leave Oxbay but will sail without one if I have to.

When I get to Jamaica I talk to the governor, get a letter of Marque, and do pirate quests for a while. Eventually I'll do some stuff in the main quest. Sometimes I just sail around exploring and trading. If I'm doing the main quest stuff, I like to take trade goods wherever I'm going so I have enough to pay crew and such.

After the very detailed description of what I do at Oxbay, the rest of the game is pretty open ended.

I've got a long post recently about how to make lots of money at the start of the game without cheating. Some will lower your reputation. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

You can make a lot of money by simply searching the chests on your ship and selling what you find. There are two on the upper deck, one in the hold, and one in the crew quarters during the day, two at night. Even making just one pass through the ship is worth a couple thousand. If you want to make more than one pass through the ship, you can rationalize it by saying you're searching more locations than the ship model has available. You won't become a millionaire by doing this, but 100K doesn't take all that long.

The Oxbay dungeon: when you're facing the shipyard, it's on your right. Go around the right side of the shipyard and look to your right. You can buy a map of that dungeon from the various merchants.

I'd like it if we could remove some of the "cheating" ways of getting money, such as your ship's chests magically refilling all the time. And also the lack of soldiers in the (fake) forts. The latter one is probably a simple fix (I suspect the period soldiers to be the cause) and I'm hoping I might be able to have a look at it next day I'm off.

It's easy money, but I'm not sure it's cheating. You build commerce skill by buying and selling items. You could buy and sell stuff for no other reason than to build your commerce skill. You could talk to people for no other reason than to build your leadership and luck skill. You could build your money by spending time searching your ship. It's safe, but boring. And it doesn't build any skills... other than commerce when you sell the stuff.

Money isn't so magical that people shouldn't be able to get it if they know what to do. Not everyone knows what a goldmine your ship's chests are. It's a trick that once you learn it, you should be able to use it. Like Virgile Boon's million gold pieces. That used to be a fun side quest. But at 20K it's not worth bothering with.

All the worthwhile stuff costs a lot of money. Silver armor. Gold armor. Navigation equipment. The best spyglass. Some of the skill enhancing items are pretty pricey. Inexperienced players won't know where to get that kind of money. Some of them won't ever be able to afford gold armor because they have no idea where to get the money for it. Give them a break and leave the money making opportunities in the game for them to find.

Are the ship's chests worth TOO much money? Probably. You always have the option of not using them, which is what I've done in some games. Anyway, searching them is boring and takes time away from the real game, and I suspect a lot of people won't bother.

If someone can get the chests to regenerate once per day without breaking every chest in the entire game, go for it. It's not high on my list of priorities.

My usual starting procedure is:
Go through Malcolm's tutorial and keep fencing with him until I go up a level. Improve my fighting skill.

Upon arrival in Oxbay, dismiss Malcolm. Either do all the normal starting stuff (buy spyglass, sell cargo, fix ship, get crew) and enter the dungeon from inside town, or start with a bit of swimming and go in by sea. (As Hook says, the entrance in town is near the shipyard. Starting from the gate leading to either the jungle or expanded Oxbay, walk toward the shipyard, keep going, and look for an arched doorway to the right. Alternatively, walk off the pier and swim round the big rock.)

Hire an officer in the tavern. If there is none available, leave the tavern and go back in - officers are generated at random so every time you go in, there may or may not be one. Tell the officer to sit out the next boarding, I don't want him getting killed before he can make me some money.

Go looking for trouble. With only limited fighting skill yet, and only a small ship, I'm only after small enemy ships. Having a spare officer means I can capture the enemy ship but keep my old one. Then I keep whichever I like best and sell the other one. I don't buy a schooner, I take it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I've set the game so I can choose which skills to take when I level up. Maybe some people would consider this "cheating" instead of letting the game decide which skills to give you, but no more than repeatedly clearing out a chest. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Are you using a Build 14 Alpha version or Build 13? Do you use the Auto Skill System?

At the begining, I usually try to buy a bronze cross + lucky ring as soon as possible and go play cards in the tavern. When I have good luck skill I'll rather play dice... In some tavern there's a day player and a night player.

I don't like dungeons, especially because you earn too much money by entering them (and because they're really not logical, but that's another question). I'd like at least to give all dungeons ennemies 0 gold. They're not that dangerous anyway... oxbay dungeon is dangerous when you don't know where&when you'll be attacked. Once you know it by heart it's not a problem anymore. You should even know where new enemies would have been spanned on your way back if you don't want to have a swim in Oxbay port. To tell the truth, at the begining of the game, I usually die when trying to open a chest...

Do new enemies ever spawn anymore? The corpse autodisappear mod was conceived to get that back, but I don't know if it works. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Setting 0 gold on all enemies doesn't sound like such a bad idea. That way, if you want to loot MONEY from people, you WILL take a reputation hit, because only non-enemy characters would have money.

I know. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

You don't want to make it so that the only thing you get from a dungeon is experience. Well, that and a number of grenades, which are useful mostly in dungeons.

There's already a switch in the game so that dungeons don't respawn enemies. That should be enough by itself to limit what you can make from dungeon crawling. Dungeon chests don't respawn every time anyway.

Hook

You were saying Hook that you were buying the Silver Armor. Is your game set so merchant sell anything or is it set to follow your lv?

Sorry, Hook. I was just thinking you still get their sword and pistol anyway... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
