I like to play a very simple version of PotC - I edit BuildSettings.h so that I can start out on level 4 (the level I would eventually reach if I spend time sparring with Malcolm before leaving the tutorial deck), and I also edit my ship (but not the money)... Something else I like to do is get my crew IMMEDIATELY on regular food and double rum rations. Their morale soars, and they fight like tigers for you. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

Hire enough officers (at least three) so you can assign them to captain prize ships until you can get back to port and sell them, and you are on your way. Tell your officers you want to be told of ALL sightings, and also I like to play at Adventurer difficulty...
I start out with the Lugger CT (because I painted her and I like the way she looks). That little lugger is one of my favorite ships - not a lot of power, but she's speedy and just right for sneaking up on bigger ships. Catch 'em in their "blindspot" and you can board with no trouble and very little cannonfire damage. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

When I finally "outgrow" the Lugger CT I like to have something with a little more firepower - and that's the Xebec CT (again, I painted her). She is fast and has good cargo capacity (great for a rumrunner, LOL!)... If I get caught in battles that are just a little too much for me, I can turn tail and usually outrun my enemy.
Get a good sword with good block, and being outnumbered by a boarding crew will never be a problem. Just find a bottleneck and deal with only one or two enemy at a time...
I will eventually go with a larger ship - a Fast Schooner or a Corvette...
Here are pics of my Xebec CT:
