Sword fighting in POTC

Mates, I've been going back and forth as I get bored between COAS(JS combined mod) and POTC Build 13 (Can't get 14v10 to work). I think I have a good handle on the ship combat, but still am not doing well with the sword. Even during the sword tutorial at the beginning you get no good guidance. In COAS you have multiple swing, attack, feint and block options. In POTC, I can move out of the way (which I've got good at), but I have one attack. I know there's got to be more, but I can't find any guides during searches and the disk I ordered from Amazon doesn't even have a companion gameguide with it.

Does anyone know where I can get a guide on sword fighting options in POTC, or can someone take the time to spell it out for me here. And please don't tell me to set it in my control options in the menu, because I tried that and can't find references to attacks/swings, feints or parries/blocks there. Sorry to be a nuisance. Help. :modding

far as i'm aware you have 4 buttons to use in sword fights
space to attack, ctrl to block,a to dodge left and d to dodge right
though in build 14 blocking is useless on defualt settings
they have a mod that allows you to still take damnage even while blocking.
i always turn that off ofcourse, but then i play in god mode too
cause i rarely win sword fights in potc.i'm much better at them in coas xD:
gotta rememeber potc came out in 2003 and while the mods have greatly improved it
it still is limited in certian aspects, sure there may be a way to add all
moves from coas mabye, may have to have access to the engine.exe to change that
i know they had to redneck rig side stepping in potc so not sure bout the parries and
over head swings and stuff. :shrug but far as my game play has taught me best thing to do in potc is swing 1st and swing fast and never stop. ;)

As a rule, swordfighting is much simplier in PotC than in CoAS. Generally, there are only following options:
- attack with Spacebar or left mouse button (depending on keys binding): main character will hit closest opponent he/she faces using some nice random preset hit-with-a-sword-animation - you have no option to select special one;
- block with Ctrl or right mouse button: keeping blade horizontally will protect our hero/heroine from being wounded by opponent, at least with some probability;
- dodge with Z: simply move back, useful especially with weak blade or low abilities.

That's all. As your alter ego gains experience, you can give him more points for fighting (with autoskill mod disabled) or will get more with more swordfighting done (with beforementioned mod enabled) and/or gets a better sword, so attack strength as well as probability of successful blocking of opponents blows will improve. You'll see in time that with 10 points in Fencing and a good sword one swing of a blade is enough lethal for most of in-game characters.

Thanks, very helpful! I'm glad I'm fairly good at dodging already. The blocking is a great help. The tutorial didn't show me the block as an option, so I was just using the space bar to attack and dodging. I'm not criticizing, cause the game and mod is really beautiful and offers so many adventures, ships, characters and plot-lines :onya . It would be even that much better though if the fence combat could be updated. I really enjoy that aspect of COAS.

Thanks for the replies.

We would like to update some things (like the sword combat) but our animation specialist is currently not around :(

He also has alot of projects he is doing at the current time so animation is big on his agenda

Blocking is NOT useless in Build 14; the "you always take damage" code has been rewritten quite a while ago.
Some of your blocks might indeed be pierced, but that was always supposed to happen anyway.
The higher the block value on your blade, the lower the chance of your block being pierced.

If you block after EACH attack, you'll be able to attack quicker than if you'd just Attack-Attack.
So always use Attack-Block-Attack. Keep blocking until your opponent hits you,
unless you see he's not going to attack, in which case you can attack again straight away.
Be sure to also attack when your opponent is flinching because you hurt him.
Both give you a nice gap to give your opponent two attacks without getting anything in return.

You can jump backwards and use your pistol,
but note that your opponent might take the opportunity to shoot you too.

I agree the swordfighting system is simple, but I like it.
In the words of Jack Sparrow: "Simple; easy to remember." ;)

Maybe one day we can make it more advanced, but don't count on it any time soon.
That is is not easily done and for now, we're focusing more on finishing what we have.

mabye i'm just unlucky or plain crap at sword fighting potc but i've won 3 fights without god mode
total, regardless of build.ofcourse i keep trying to play without godmode but well dieing just
takes out my will to play.

Haha it took me ages to get good at the sword fighting in the game but once you are good at it you can win most fights (unless its like 50 on 1) :rofl
