Stupid question

Maybe I'm incredibly dense, but after the intro-sword-fight with Malcom (build 14, b1, p5; new horizons story), he tells you to buy stuff etc and then disappears.
Now what? How do I get from walk-around-mode to ship-sailing-mode? All I can do is walk around the deck of the ship. Kind of inhibits the game. ;-) No fast-travel options or anything, and I can't go back below decks.
I'm new to the build mod, but played POTC stock briefly before upgrading.
 
Go to the little staircase (more like 3 steps, lol) to your right, at the border of the deck, there should be a little boat icon showing up on the top left of your screen to let you transtition to Speighstown (formerly known as Oxbay).

There is no "little staircase", or "steps". At least no on the starting lugger. What there is is a little "notch" in the side of the ship (both sides), that looks the exact same as the ones the cannons are pointing out of. You have to go here to leave the ship it seems. This is in no way intuitive or self-evident or obvious.

Having to go to the aftcastle's bell to go to "sea" isn't overly self-evident either, and certainly doesn't add to the fun. :-(
 
This program really doesn't have any instructions to speak of. One has to learn by going through the school of hard knocks. This can be frustrating, but in encourages one to explore the world fully. There is much to be learned by wandering aimlessly.
 
If you play through the tutorial, Malcolm will show you where to disembark your ship; just follow him.
