Sorriest Pirate Seeks Some Tips

JohnTaylor

Landlubber
Greetings, I've been attempting to play POTC for a week or so now, and I can't seem to get much done successfully. I'm about to give up the pirate's life (which would be a shame since it looks and feels magnificent) despite feeling there's a real gem here. Anyhoo, I have a few questions for the more experienced players:

1) I had 75,000 gold pieces onboard ship when my crew demanded their monthly pay, yet I was unable to pay them. Do I have to be carrying their pay with me (in my personal inventory where I might lose it in a fight)?

2) Everytime I talk to the shipwright, it seems two days passes according to the text in the upper left corner? Is this correct?

3) Once I forgot to transfer Nathaniel Hawk from the ship I was selling to the other ship I owned, and found out that he could no longer board at all even though I still owned one ship. I had to buy Hawk a gunboat, transfer him to the frigate I intended to keep, and only then was I able to board (and sold the gunboat at a loss). Was that what you would have done?

4) I thought I'd do a couple of quests before doing what I wanted but the Governor of Redmond keeps assigning them right away. Can I say I'll do it, and then not do it for months? Without failing the quest?

5) I must be missing it but how do I order an allied ship to "follow me"?

6) I donated money to the church to raise my reputation from iirc a "scalawag" but nothing happened to my reputation, I remain a scalawag. Do I need to empty my meager stash?

7) Really frustrating incident: I'm supposed to convoy some troops to a cave to recapture Oxbay from the French. I leave the harbor at Grenford with my ship and the transport, but we're never able to go to the World Map. I guess that's because there are enemy ships within gun range yet I NEVER see them with my fine telescope and they're not firing at us. I can "sail to" (the text tells me "it took twenty minutes") the enemy and look for a fight but they outnumber us and outclass my ship. I tried sailing at "fast time" for half-hour (my time) but never could enter the World Map. What should I have done? Should I be looking at the text in the upper left corner and saying "Oh, enemy ships are out somewhere. Best wait some more on the dock?"

The last 7) incident really is depressing me. I sail and sail and look and look, no enemy in sight but I can't jump to world map. I get frustrated after a real-time hour of fast sailing at 10x speed but no luck.

After 11 days of trying to play POTC, I can't say I've had much fun. When does the fun start? signed...The Soggiest Sailor.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> there. G'day matey.

I think I can help you out with some of these.

1) Yes, you need to have the money on your person. More differentiation between ships wealth and personal wealth is being pursued by the modders.

2) With Build 12 yes thats the way it works. Mods have since tweaked this so that time passed actually depends on the amount of work done.

3) Try berthing your other ship, assign Nat as captain and then relaunch into the flagship slot.

4) As far as I know there is no time limit to the Governor's quests. I often go off and do other things and return to the Governors quests when it suits me. Some of the other quests do require you to complete them within a certain time.

5) Ordering your allied ship to defend your flagship seems to work for me.

6) Seems to require much greater donations to see any significant change in rep. I suppose any donation would improve your rep however sometimes not enough to take it to the next level. Not sure but i think that's the way it works.

7) You don't need to re-enter the world map to complete this one. Just sail manually or by "sail to" to Grey Rock Bay (I think that's the place) and if there are no enemy ships too close, drop anchor and you should be able to complete this phase of your mission ashore there. Be ready for a fight.

Hope this helps you out. There are a few strange bugs with this game that the modders are working hard to fix, but all up it's an excellent game, particularly with all the new mods in the Build, so stick with it matey. Look forward to the next Build.

Cheers. Thanks for the prompt reply. I did as you said for 7) and simply sailed round the coast until I reached the bay. So I've made progress there.

I think I'll have to read the "read me" again to see how money is handled. It seems that whatever gold is in my character's pockets is the CREWS MONEY? I noticed that when I looked at the "Donate money to crew" section their money matched the gold I have on the character.

In any case, I did complete the quest despite a strange incident where I'm trying to escape the French guards with the French captain but I'm unable to board the rowboat. They leave me fighting the guards whom I dispatch, and then I quick travel to the tavern and there's the French captain and we again go to the part and sail off in a corvette instead of the frigate he was supposed to be commanding.

Anyway, now I'm free to sail on my own.

Thanks. I'm going to keep sailing. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hmmm....you should be able to go to the world map anytime you're onboard ship but pressing "enter" A group of icons will appear in the lower left corner. Pick the compass and that should put you on the world map. But to avoid pirates attacking you as you leave port try using the "sail to" icon (again press "enter" to access icons) and autosail to another part of the island ("far beach" "crab cliffs" any location accessible from the icons). Then go to the world map and sail to your destination. Don't forget that you can save on the world map then you don't have to go back to the "save" at you last port. Now go kick some pirate butt.......... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

I assume you are using the Post Build 12 mods.
Normally in POTC, you can't use sail-to, or go to the world map if there are enemy near.

In the BuildSettings.h file, check the entries for:
// Sea Realism Params
#define MIN_ENEMY_DISTANCE_TO_DISABLE_MAP_ENTER 500.0 // original value is 500
#define MIN_ENEMY_DISTANCE_TO_DISABLE_ENTER_2_LOCATION 500.0 // original value is 500

If they are set to 1000, which would make for nice realism on open waters, then you can't leave even if enemy vessels are on the other side of the island, because the game reads them as too close.
Just reset them to 500 and it will be more normal.

Excellent tip, I think I will lower the setting - at least until I get somewhat better. Thanks for the example.
