Short Jack Gold's quest-writing work

For "game over", try this:<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->        case "hung at dawn":
            pchar.killed = true;
            PostEvent("LAi_event_GameOver", 0, "s", "mutiny");
        break;<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

You might want to hold off from testing - I have found a couple of issues - the clock doesn't seem to work on land - so if you land at night you're screwed.
Also I have jumped a case condition which let's Pellew speak too soon re the French declaration of war. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dp_nogd.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ng" border="0" alt="dp_nogd.gif" />

I will mod and upload later today.

Agh! I already started. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />
Anyway, so far so good. After the battle, the game continued just fine.
I made some slight dialog adjustments and changed some #name# thingeys.

One comment:<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->"The first battle is always the worst. Hrumph! Well, Captain Keene has signalled that we make our way to #sisland_Oxbay#, to refit and repair. He will return to Charlestown to make his report.",
"But Captain, there will be prize ships for the taking round here now the Volcano is gone! And Captain Keene will get all the glory for the sinking of the Volcano!",
"Hrumph.. That's as may be, but don't argue lad. Captain Keene has sent a package over by long boat, I assume to confirm his orders. Mr. Simpson is collecting them now. Set sail for #sisland_Oxbay#. We have our own wounds to lick, and the 'Indy' could use a spot of paint right now.",
"Yes Captain. Sorry Sir, the crew does need a break after that.",<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->This seems to be a bit out of character for Hornblower. The book character Hornblower doesn't care about prize ships at all; actually, he considers the whole system to be pretty silly. Also Hornblower isn't a person who would want to draw attention to his own successes.

I have a feeling that the Tavern isn't available a night! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Sort of messed me up a bit - I am still testing this.
This of course would be a PROGRAM issue.

(Do need the bit about the documents though)

I am about to upload the corrected version - now dated 21 Feb 09 (killed the other one - under your "you <b>will </b>keep the ftp site tidy" rule. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> - only joking!)

It has some other minor dialog changes that I forgot to put in for the extended plot. (love interest <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sick.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eww" border="0" alt="sick.gif" /> )

The tavern should be open at any time of the day, also at night. Shipyards and stores close, but taverns don't. After all, you haveto be able to spend the night there. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
I'm downloading your files right now and will check them out. So far, I liked what I saw. The storyline is definitly quite different when compared to the books and films (Hornblower didn't meet Bush until the HMS Renown, Captain James Sawyer wasn't a nice guy, there definitly wasn't a plot against <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>Jack Simpson</span> and <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>Lady Barbara</span> wasn't on the dock right at the beginning of the quest), but it does have the characters. It's especially the atmosphere of a <i>navy</i> quest as opposed to a pirate quest that I really like. It's definitly something different.
BTW: One thing I think you <i>should</i> add in there: Hornblower's seasickness scene right at the beginning before ever leaving port. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Are you sure you uploaded the correct files? There were some updates, but the whole battle was commented out.
Also, I don't recall seeing the .c reference required for the two added "romance" lines. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

(uncomment - and change case sections back: I will re-do and upload today[already DONE]).
Romance is just added to existing dialog for now - <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>Hornblower should marry first then get involved with the lady- he just "sees" the lady for now</span>

I am well aware that it doesn't follow the story (I can easily add sea-sick bit) but over-all if I do it will be ages before Hornblower actually does something "naval" like the battle if you know what I mean. (difficult to explain what I mean here, but I think so can see my point - it is trying to get a balance between story and action for the game.)

This is my point of discussion - at the moment <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>I have him being sent to Eleuthra to spy on Spain and the USA's relationship - where he will be captured and put in a Spanish jail. Set-up for this added to today's upload.</span>

So what do you want? - follow the book, or, a naval type game with "Hornblower type" characters in it?
Please let me know.

My main concern is that it works without CTD's, freezes etc. for now. This version (which I know has nothing to do with the storyline itself) with its game actions, does work well for me. Did it crash at all for you?

Jack Sparrow - which worked fine before - is still giving me all sorts of freezes and slow-downs and I had changed nothing! (Some I am working out others will take longer I think). Perhaps I should try it in 18.5 you are proposing and see how it works there, in case it changes things.

I am currently uploading Build 14 Alpha 8.5 which includes yesterday's Hornblower files. All more recent fixes will make it into Alpha 9 though.

You'd better wait with doing anything with Eleuthera; that island still needs to be finished. Pirate_KK tried to add Philippe's work in, but that is still unreleased and won't be in Alpha 8.5.

As for your story vs. the books/movies; personally I don't mind at all if there's some vast differences. As long as some of the characters and events from the books and movies make an appearance, that's quite fine by me. It's not so much a <i>Hornblower</i> quest, but a <i>navy</i> quest, which is certainly very welcome. I would like it if the pesonalities of the characters do remain at least partly faithful to the original stories though, but you can take any creative license with the events as far as I'm concerned. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
