Sailing without the map - setting the records straight

Right i have made this topic solely to add my input to and clarify the topic on the question of sailing between islands without using the map
- In short - not possible!

I have extensively tried this myself some months ago in build 10 - the situation hasnt changed either - and found that quite simply what happens is that

your progress is marked on the map - ie the more you sail the further you go - all the way across the map

However no other islands are loaded - ie if you try hard enough you can sail into where an island would be on the map but no island appeared in the 3d view

So quite simply the engine does not support sailing without using hte map - the cells and islands are not loaded and you simply plodder away on an empty sea - however your location in relation to the map is noted.

Hope this helped clarify some things!
CHEERS!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

I can confirm most of that, I tested the theory of travelling in "Sea" mode from island to island unsuccessfully also, only difference is that I found that you get stuck at the edge of the sea map. I actually had a battle and kept hitting the "invisible wall" one time. I found that once you reach this wall, on the world map you are usually about half way between islands.

Irational's quite...rational. And right.
You can sorta get around this by hitting F3 then space immediately afterwards.

It shouldn't be _that_ hard to create something that checks your distance from the old island to get your wdmap coords, and then loads a new location if you're near another island. You'll get the occasional "loading sea" screen, but you wouldn't have to hit the wdmap.

HOWEVER, that would kill a lot of important background systems, like storms, encounters, etc. (and only now with B12 is time really tracked at sea; in b11 or before the date wouldn't advance either).

well, can't this be an automaticly feature ?.. like sailing and then when you reach an island that you'll get the loading screen automaticly... so you don't have to pres f3/space manually.. just a thought <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

changing wheater during sailig is I gues also impossible <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> ?

Yep, it just changes in a few milliseconds, and there you are, in blazing sunlight after the pitvh black of the night, suddenly realizing that 5 MoWs are closing in on your mastless lugger rather rapidly... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I was playing around adding a timer to sea mode*, and so I decided--well, time is passing, let's see if we can get the weather to update.
Sadly yes it is rather abrupt, but there's no way I can think of to smooth out the transition short of adding new transitional weather schemes.

Regarding "well, can't this be an automaticly feature"
Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying in the text you quoted. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
That creating said feature shouldn't be _too_ hard.

*This all started when Pappy took us west--no, wait.
Right. This all started when I wanted to add some downside, or at least realism, to the Sailto option. That is, that autosailto would not take 0 time, but an appropriate amount of time.
The problem with that, however, is that time _itself_ isn't really tracked at sea, so there was no way to add to that time.
The solution was to add a pchar attribute, seatime, and start it at 0 whenever the pchar reloads to sea, and increment it by 1 each second.
Then, to make it actually make a difference to gametime, there are a variety of scalars to convert realtime seconds into gametime seconds (currently, 5 game seconds pass per realtime (player) second, at sea).
And once every realtime minute, the world time is updated. If that puts us in the next hour, weather is updated.

wow.. great job NK <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> I would add this feature in the readme tough, CUZ IT'S HUGE <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> !!! grreaattt jobssss <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
