Ahoy There'

Huzzah to everyone working on the mod, at the moment im really into build 13 final. I've been playing for years now on and off none of the other pirate games quite do it for me and I keep coming back here for more

Your opinions please guys, to cut a long story short I need to get a new computer soon, will I be able to run POTC with Vista, and what do you think, 512MB Radion or 512MB Nvidia ? Im currently using a 256 Nvidia so I know both will work but which do you think is better ? its not going to be intel integral is is ?

The PC im looking at from MESH is 540 quid for :

Windows Vista
22 inch LCD widescreen
2.5 dual core processor
512MB Radion graphic card
4GB RAM
500GB HD

My dilemma is, I probably could spend an extra couple of hundred quid on something a lot more powerful but do I really need it ?

The game does work on Vista, so that shouldn't be a problem. However, I recommend you DON'T install to the default C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Pirates of the Caribbean; Vista doesn't seem to like Build mod installers messing around in Program Files, resulting in erroneous installations. Install to, for example, C:\Games\Pirates of the Caribbean and it works just fine.

If you get a computer to play PotC on, one thing to do is to make sure it DOESN'T have an Intel onboard graphics card. PotC virtually always crashes on those. Other than that, I'm not sure what would and wouldn't work. The game runs with the nVidia card in my laptop, but I've heard rumours that the game doesn't work right on certain high-end video cards. Not sure if there's any truth in that or which GFX cards that would be. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

If I copy my files to C>Games I get an error which says that if I delete or place the map somewhere else, programs maybe won't work eny more:S

You can ignore that error, can't you? It's true; the shortcut won't work anymore, because it pointed to the old spot, but if you're going to move it back, there's nothing to worry about.

I'd say to go with a 512MB Nvidia - that's just an opinion of my personal preference, but I ran into nothing but problems the one time I used a machine with a Radeon card. No games I tried would work, yet they ran fine on a similar computer with a Nvidia card.

As for changing any of what you've got listed...well...that all depends on if you want to be able to play every new game coming out in the next few years. Quad-core computers appear as often as dual-core in stores here now, so I'd bet on seeing a few games having quad-core minimum requirements about a year down the road.

One thing I would change, though, is the monitor. I'd go for something other than widescreen, especially if you're playing lots of older games, since from what I've seen, piles of them crash when trying to display right, or distort the heck out of their picture. I'd stick with a 22 inch, though - anything bigger kinda necessitates the user sit next door when viewing it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> The 19 inch I've got eats up enough desk space as it is. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Thanks for the replies lads

I found a bargain at Comet yesterday, a Base Unit with a cosmetic scratch reduced to 257 quid

Spec is

2.3 Dual core AMD Athlon
2 GB Ram
320 GB Hard Drive
Radeon 256 MB Graphics card

I realise its nothing spectacular, but for that price it will do the job

Stallion, thanks for your opinion on the Radeon card, if the worst comes to the worst I can upgrade to a 512MB Nvidia I will see how I get on

ps - Piet, what do you think about radeon graphics ?

If by "Piet" you mean me, I'm sorry, but I just haven't got a clue. I only ever had nVidia GFX cards and can say nothing about anything else.
I've got a laptop with an "Up to 384MB nVidia GeForce Go 7300 TurboCache" GFX card and the game does run on that. However, things that looked fine on the old computer, look overly bright with this GFX card. Especially BuildingSet buildings and such. Too bad, really. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Ahoy

I got my new pc today, first thing I did after setting up my internet was instal my stock copy of POTC. It installed no problem, did a test and it was running better and smoother than ever. So off I go to your Pirate Page and download the build 13 final, to the c/games as per your recommendation.
When it came to the runme.bat, halfway down the list it said something like '1 file found 0 file copied' then at the bottom it read 'all done' but it doesnt work, when I launch the game its still stock.

Any suggestions or shall I just do a re-install ?

Thanks lads

The game's still stock after installing Build 13? HUH??? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
Make sure you install to the correct folder; by default the installer wants to add "Pirates of the Caribbean: Build 13 Final" to all paths,
which it really shouldn't be doing! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
Usually RunMe.bat will give a couple of error messages, but these are nothing to worry about since they refer to being unable to
remove files that are already not there or to move files that are already where they should be.

Hi Pieter

for some reason it didnt like the mod file in c/games, I managed to get it working in the main c/programme files, been running really well except for one CTD when I was leaving cayman port but thats minor in over 9 hours of play!

Its going so well I think I may have a go at Build 14-6 and see what thats like, I get the impression that there are a fair few bugs but still playable ?

Thanks for all the help

Build 14 Alpha 6 seems to work pretty well. Also Alpha 8.5 plus the to-be-released-later-today patch are also beginning to get pretty good.
When that CTD occured, do you have any idea why? I know there's a "full cargo hold at midnight" CTD that occurs, but we finally found a fix for that.

Hi Pieter

Thanks for the reply above, only just seen it.

The crash problem I encountered at Cayman most likely was due to full cargo hold, happened to me a couple of times hence but its minor really - just leave 100 unit free in the cargo hold seemed to do the trick

Here's the fix: <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.net/build/midnight_fullcargohold_ctdfix_b13.zip" target="_blank">http://www.piratesahoy.net/build/midnight_..._ctdfix_b13.zip</a>
With that, you should be able to have a full cargo hold just fine again. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
