Prisoners escaping

Out of curiosity, what causes this? I had 3 prisoners on board, one of them for a verrrry long time (I had Virgile Boon since practically the beginning of the storyline, his ransom value was up to 1.4 million), and then all of a sudden the whole lot of them jumped overboard when I landed in one of the colonies (I think it was St. Martin or Guadeloupe, but I'm not sure). I assume it must be something I did that caused them all to jump overboard all of a sudden, because the odds of all three of them, including one who had been with me for so long, leaving at the exact same time are pretty astronomical. So if anyone could let me know what causes that so that I can avoid it in future, I'd appreciate it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I think that the higher the ransom value gets the higher probability it is that the prisoner will escape.

It's how it was coded probably, though I could be wrong <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Well, I guess that's possible, but it still seems kind of unlikely. Here's how it happened:

1) I pulled into port to repair some damage to my ships from the previous battle.
2) Slept in the tavern because the shipyard wasn't open.
3) Repaired all 4 ships.
4) In the massive message log that followed, all 3 prisoners jumped overboard.
5) I reloaded a save (thankfully I save frequently, lots of CTDs)
6) Ransomed off Virgile Boon right away to get what money I could, just in case
7) The other two jumped overboard while I was sleeping in the tavern.

Now, the other two that jumped overboard were fairly recent captures, so they had small ransoms (less than 10k). Both of them still jumped overboard at the same time, both before and after loading that save. I was thinking it had something to do with the damage my ships had taken, but only one of them had taken significant hull damage (down to about 20%), and it wasn't even my player-controlled ship, so I'm wondering if it wasn't something else instead.

I've got to admit I have no idea how that is coded; I always thought it was random.

Okay, now I seem to have a different problem.

I managed to keep Virgile Boon on board for a while longer (not really sure how, I guess randomness does play into it somehow), and a while later when his ransom was higher, I ransomed him off. Now suddenly my crew's morale is plummeting. And I do mean plummeting. It went from 72 to 54 in one day, and then dropped by at least 10 points per day after that. I tried a bunch of things and confirmed that ransoming off the prisoner is definitely what caused this. Is this supposed to happen? What can I do to prevent it?

Do you have more than 1,000,000 gold over the monthly crew pay? If so, the crew's probably being envious of you.
Pay to raise morale or switch to "devide the plunder" mode.
