Post build 12 woes.

Oldtimer

Master Mariner
Hi all,

just installed post build12 with all bells and whistles. I think it`s a great effort, but maybe a tad to diificult.
Just so you know I come from TBS world where players usually don`t reload campaigns from saves. Once you lose, it`s back to square one...

Now I`d appreciate some gameplay hints.

1. When you start a new game at Oxbay and do not skip Malcolms intro(you go to town, not putting to sea immediately) you get sunk by the fort when you leave(suppose fort is already French).
So you are in your lifeboat and even if you tried to build up cash while in Oxbay it`s probably far too little to buy any serious ship(no, gunboats are not too serious).

Any hints on how to get back into running(earning cash) with a real ship, even if it be one of the smallest? And no unrealistic boarding actions from the lifeboat, please... I try to play realistic, poor me.

2. Pickpockets, a real pain in the ass. When you kill someone after he adjusted his collar, you`ll probably have all town coming for you. If you want to hire the villain as an officer and take him out of of town and kill him there, you don`t have money for that because he`s got your money already... ARRGH!!!
Especially annoying if you have saved up something for replacing your lifeboat with something better...

Otherwise I observed that you can take your officers money by the Exchange action, but I don`t do that from my ordinary officers and can`t take pickpockets money because I can`t hire him.

Any gameplay solution for that? Or is it possible to reduce the all to frequent appearance of pickpockets?

Regards, Oldtimer

when you leave oxbay at the start stay in the world map view and just sail away the fort won't/can't attack you.
if you wish to continue and have low amounts of cash your best bet is to run between greenford and FTF running sandal. ok you have to work with smugglers but the pay is alot better then running it to redford <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Doesn't Malcolm recommend you to raise French colours when you leave Oxbay? If you do that, you won't get shot. If you don't do that, the French probably will attack.

Go fight some enemies on land (in the dungeons for example) and take all their belongings. You can also go into the Oxbay houses and ask people if they need a guard for their house. You might thenbe able to protect them for some money.

Yep. Pains in the ass for sure. But that's what pickpockets truly are, aren't they? You should increase your luck and leadership skill (I think), so they won't steal so often from you anymore. Also, when you talk to them again you can try to get them to give back the money. But you must be lucky for that. If that doesn't work, they're in luck, because killing them will get everybody angry.

You can change the chance in the PROGRAM\BuildSettings.h using the NO_THEFT define.

I hope this helps you. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hi boys,

thanks for answering my queries. Unfortunately Malcolm doesn`t suggest anything abt. flag change and I have no time at all to get into world map before being sunk.

BTW, only flag I can change to, BUT not fro, is the pirate flag. And it`s not pleasant being stuck among the pirates for good...

Re pickpockets I have discovered ways to identify them before they get a chance to steal. A bit gamey, it`s in the dialogue.
Should be a small chance for them to steal even if you cut short the onversation with the buggers...

Regards, Oldtimer

weird that you don't get a chance to put to sea. i just about always play with the whole going into oxbay bit and if you do the missions bit's with malcom when you leave you get the french fleet cutscene and then jump right to the world map

The game got changed there recectly. It used to transport you to straight to mapmode after showing a cutscene, but now you have to raise French colours and sail away manually. You can turn this change off though in BuildSettings.h.
Strange that you are unable to raise French colours. One of the most recent changes is that you should be able to raise any flag you want. Are you sure you installed the latest modpack update correctly? Or didn't you start a new game after the latest modpack update?

ah ok. yeah started a new game after latest update but i took the smuggling optoin for some reason

What's the smuggling option... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Hi Pieter,

first, thanks for your help. Second, I think I installed everything properly, unpacking with ZipGenius 6.0. I saw build12 folders unpack to POTC folder and I saw info on files being overwritten when installing post build12 and it`s updates incl. of 31 Dec update.

But I can only raise neutral flag from the relations interface and pirate one from action icons ingame.

Anyway, I got myself killed when hunting villains in Oxbay to raise cash and got relocated on resurrection to Greenford, with my beloved lugger... So I could continue without cheating, but it`s kinda dissatisfying not being able to run under false flag.

BTW, smuggling on default difficulty is extremely profitable, risks seem small. It`s almost an exploit as it is now, IMO.
It`s quite possible to save up for a real ship by a few lifeboat(tartana)
voyages...

Regards, Oldtimer

Strange that you can only raise a neutral flag. I know that's how it used to work before things got changed there, but now you should be able to raise any flag you want from the relation screen. You could try hiring an officer in a tavern and ask him (her?) to raise new colours. Maybe that <i>would</i> work?

where ya skip out and get hit by the storm. gives ya stuff that smugglers want where ya wash up

Ah. The Stormy Start option. For all I know, the Stormy Start should work fine, though I haven't tested it recently. You'll be automatically moved to a different beach, so you won't have to escape Oxbay anymore.

About changing your flag: Make sure you are still on land when changing it. If you first go to sailing mode and then change the flag, you are too late. Also: It seems like you can't (always?) change to any flag you like when you are sailing.

Also: I tested it and Malcolm really does suggest raising French colours when leaving port. Of course, if you quickly skip through the dialog, you won't notice it. Please check if Malcolm does suggest it; it should be one of the last things he says while still in the tutorial cabin. If he really doesn't, something got messed up in your installation and you are running the game with half of the latest updates or something. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Hi all,

after installing the 5 Jan 2006 upgrade I can change flags on land through the officers dialogue.
The Stormy Start option now also works.

Have not yet checked up on Malcolm and still can`t hoist other than pirate flag at sea through action icons.

Hi all,

BTW, I no longer think smuggling is easy money. Often you get into dillicult battles after completing the deal with the smugglers.

Oldtimer, try this out on the PickPockets, it works for me, as I also used to be plagued by them rodents! Switch to your Fists in inventory and punch them out, then search their persons and get your money back ( tis what Jack would've done ) Now at this point, you will lose "reputation" either Don't sweat the small Stuff and forget about it OR go back to the Pickpocket who is still sitting there with Stars dancin around his head and choose the talkin option with the Give The "Poor Bugger" a potion. This will make a man out him real quick and you get your points back, Savvy!

You still run the risk of everyone getting mad at you, because only once in a Tavern the locals took offence and I had to defend my person, but hey it works for me most of the time, and it be good strategy for your character, just like the movie ( and wont offend your realistic values neither ) OR if'n your in Town, after you take back your Money and then run for the nearest ( I call them Warp Points between 2 sections of towns or ports ) Warp Point and you should be fine......This also fits your character, because it takes a poor leader not to know when to make a tactical withdrawal <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/slap.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":slap" border="0" alt="slap.gif" />

P.S. mind you Pieter's is right, after awhile I dont notice pickpockets like I used to.........Must be my Manhandlin Reputation getting around.

P.P.S. Don't be arguing with them Buggers either, because once you get to their line of " oh I dont work alone, I handed the ball off to Jimmy Rice for a touchdown or some such nonsence your money be long gone....then your beatin them for princible, also much like My Character!! That One They be deserving! Savvy

Hi Long John Silver,

and thanks. This sounds fun, I`ve never thought that fists can be of practical use...

Regards, Oldtimer

Raising other flags thant he pirate flag is not done trough the action command. You should be able to raise any flag you like through the F2 > Relations interface. You can also ask a tavern-hired officer about your current colours and change the flag that way.

About pickpockets: You can give your money to an officer. Pickpockets don't steal from officers.

About using your fists: That was one of the few mods I actually did write myself. Nice to see it's being used. I wrote it so that the higher your rank, the harder you punch. If your punch is hard enough, you can knock your opponent out. If you have any comments on what defines the strength of a punch or if you have any other comments on that mod, please say so and I'll see what I can do.
BTW: If somebody draws a blade on you while you don't have a blade in your own hands, press the F-key (quick-equip key) to quickly grab a blade of your own. Fists are of no use to defend against someone with a blade. You'll be killed almost straight away, because you can't block with your fists.

Har, a man to my heart who sees the gameplay opportunities in those pickpockets and not only the nuisance <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

BTW1: the higher your Luck skill the less will you be the victim of thievery, and the more often will YOU get a chance to steal

BTW2: sandbags and cobblestones are even better for knocking out people <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/slap.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":slap" border="0" alt="slap.gif" />

Hey Chris, great that you are still around <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> We are just enjoying a sort of "second spring" of PotC modding.
