possible to attack other settlement types

Is it possible to attack other settlement types (settlement, mission, pirates haven etc?). I don't get the attack option when walking into these settlements.

It's not possible to attack settlements,pirate havens,towns only mate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Jasper - These places, even though you cannot attack them, do serve a purpose. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<b><u>Settlements</u></b>

1. When/if you capture an enemy town you can and should sail to the nearest friendly Settlement, (same nationality as Gov you just installed in new town), and speak to the Mayor. He will tell you he has been appointed Gov of a city, more than likely the one you just took over, and ask you to escort him. This is a good idea as the city will prosper much faster and in my games it gets reinforced much faster when a new Gov arrives.

2. A Mayor may tell you they have developed a new strain of seed and ask you which city it should be delivered to. Once it arrives, the city will flourish do the increase in food stocks.

3. You may trade, albeit small quantities, of items with a settlement.

4. You may also visit enemy Settlements and speak to the Gov, he will also ask you to escort him.. when he leaves port you can ambush him and in some cases get you a very nice Royal Sloop. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<u><b>Jesuit Missions</b></u>

1. At times the Abbot will ask you to escort immigrants to one of several cities, I always choose the one which is of the same nationality as I. Once they arrive in the city, it will again be better off. I tend to do this to newly captured cities.

2. The Abbot may also offer to dispatch a Brother from the mission to speak on your behalf to whichever nationality has a price on your head. If you accept escort the Brother to the enemy city. After that the enemy nation will no longer have a bounty on your head. However, that does not mean they will now be friendly. You may still get fired upon near the larger towns. But it is a start to winning "positive" points from your enemy, making them less hateful of you.

3. You may trade, albeit small quantities, of items with a mission.

<u><b>Pirate Havens</b></u>

1. You can talk to the Capt of the Pirate Haven, (PH), and he will ask you which city needs plundering. This is useful if you have a relatively small/weak crew and want to crack a tough city. Example; I have 350 crew and want to attack a city with 500 troops..I can visit the nearest PH and tell the Capt to attack that city. More than likely they will not succeed, however the attack should kill some of the town’s troops, hopefully making it easier for you to attack. (NOTE: see Indian Villages below)

2. You may trade, albeit small quantities, of items with a PH. (NOTE: I have seen cannon at a Pirate Haven before)

<u><b>Indian Villages</b></u>

1. You may speak to the chief, if friendly, and he will suggest a list of cities that he could attack. Again, same as with PH's you can send them to soften up a city which may be a tad to tough for you. (NOTE: it has been observed by several forum regulars that an Indian attack will lower the number of defenders more than a pirate attack.)

2. You may trade, albeit small quantities, of items with an Indian Village.

excellent input GI Joe <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

What you posted is great information, and will be a help to many. Thanks!

and fire at you, if you have particularly pirated against thier intrests, such as sinking thier ships right outside their harbor, sinking the trade ships from other nations that are bound for that city, sinking a military payroll headed for that city, etc...

They really don't like it if you interrupt their business. I had a recent game, where I started as the English in St. Kitts. I then attacked every Dutch ship going into, and coming out of, St. Martin and St Eustatius. I was trying my best to get a Ship of the Line. I built up over a 50k bounty in the first year. I never got the SotL to spawn, so I moved on after a while. After about 7 or 8 years my bounty was gone, and the Dutch had forgiven me, but I could not sail into St. Martin or St. Eustatius until a few years later. Even having rank didn't matter. I tried going there as a Dutch Captain and Major , and though I could go freely in and out of Curacao, and get promoted by the Governor of Curacao, St. Martin and St. Eustatius were hostile for a few more years. I was Dutch Admiral before I could ever go to those towns.

Aye mate,found de same thing,some O dem Dutchman be an unforgiven lot,maybe it be taken a couple O'years fer em tew get the news <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I swear one time I got a message like this: "Spain has captured the settlement of..." Perhaps the word settlement was just a term for a really small city and not an actual settlement.

You will often see troops being transported out of settlements too so it's good to conquer cities next to friendly settlements.

Always get pirates to attack a large city first, and then get an Indian attack. If the pirates win, they will plunder all the gold too. Oh yeah, and time it perfect because large cities will reinforce quickly!

One more benefit that the pirate haven provides: If you are trying to curry favor with lots of nations at once, you can go to the pirate haven, tell the captain that a nearby city needs plundering, then attack the ship that the haven sends out. In short, use the havens to spawn new pirates to fight!

Here's a tip expanding on what Joe said.
You can ALSO escort enemy govenors and they will raise the amount of money in that city.
A good strategy is to:
1. Ask a native chief to attack a city. (this kills off the enemy troops)
2. Escort the canoes. They will be attacked by pirates.
3. Go to the nearest settlement of the same nation and escort the mayor. (this boosts the economy there)
4. Hit the city before any ships carrying troops can land there. You should have enough time, but if you don't, you can always sink those ships as well.
I find it best to take out the one or two pirate hunters a city has and then hit every ship in the area. New pirate hunters come in as new war ships, and they are much easier to take out as that than pirate hunters.
Just a couple of tips from an old Buckaneer.
