Okay please explain sword play

I just got the game today, I've got community build 12, and just starting out I am trying to learn sword play with the character trying to teach it to me in the beginning of the game. But I just dont get it!

I draw my sword and I hit the spacebar, but after were done he always suggests that I take another lesson. I feel like I dont know what Im doing, I've read the manual in this regard and it offers me little help, tells me to press E to draw my sword and spacebar to attack, ctrl to block, but I dont know when Im supposed to attack and when Im supposed to block.

How in the world do you actually learn to sword fight with this guy, it really seems impossible.
 
Argghhh! mate 'ad de same problem when I'd be first play'n de game.I'd suggest ye go to yer interface an configure de keys fer swordplay,sail'n an so on tew yer personal tastes,fer example I'b be have'n mine set up dis way being a lefty,keys: V = Draw sword. B+ block,N= attack, M = dodge.spacebar=shoot pistol,so fer meself all de keys are on de bottom row so I can react faster tew yer enemy's moves,which after some practise,ye slaughter any one try'n te steal yer booty xD:de only exception would be Catalina,she makes off wid some O' me Snakebite brew 'ery now an then,cause she's jest that good <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Don't think of beating him, only use him for practice.

That is because you start in the tutorial part of the game. It's all for practice.

You really can't beat him. he is given too many hit points.

You just fence with him as long as you like until you are comfortable with your movements and key combinations.

Once you feel you have the controls down pat, then just tell him you have had enough and want to move on to something else.
 
By default, block.
When he swings, hold down block just long enough to catch his sword, then attack yourself. Once the sword hits him, hit the block key again
If he goes to attack you while you're attacking as well, give up and block; you can always attack again.
 
I have noticed that if you and your opponent are swinging your swords at each other, and you both cancel the attack midswing, and go into a block, your swords will clang together in dramatic fashion. I have been able to pull it off only twice <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />
 
Best way to swordfight IMO is to hold the Ctrl key down to block and wait for your opponent to swing. When he makes contact CLANG with your blade, drop your block (release the Ctrl key) and hit your spacebar two or three times. You'll swing, and hopefully make a hit. Put your block back up and wait for him to swing again. Keep watching him - sometimes he may either feint or swing his sword around, or he may reel back when you hit him. That can be an opportunity to strike again before putting your block back up.

You'll catch on - there's almost a rhythm to it.

Malcolm will do practice bouts with you for as long as you wish - take your time. You can't kill him and he won't kill you - you are both set so that you have to stop before that happens...

You can also practice with Malcolm long after he stops suggesting that you need more practice - just tell him you think you need to practice some more, and he'll begin again. This is a good way to up your HP at the beginning of the game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I found it easier to sword fight by mapping the attack and block to the mouse using 'left click' and 'right click' respectively and mapping move foward and back to 'W' and 'S' respectively. I kept Q for pistol and E for draw/sheath and mapped dodge to the 'F' key. Also kept 'A' and 'D' as sidestep. If you've played any FPS I'm sure this will be more familar to you. Follow the above mentioned advice and practice. I think most of us had a hard time sword fighting at first, I know I did. Good luck.
 
The only button I changed was moving the attack button from spacebar to "x", because I was finding my spacebar less responsive than I liked.

Everybody's suggestions above should certainly help you in this, and the only thing I can offer is to suggest "patience" when it comes to swordfights.

If you imagine that time stands still for the world outside of the swordfight, and take your time during a bout it may help you, especially later on when you have to face as many as four opponents (or more, now that I think about it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock:" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> ) at the same time.

The ctrl/block key held down will keep you from being damaged, until you have to start having to deal with high piercing swords, almost indefinitely and you can start to time your attacks in between the attacks of your opponent.

Except for your opponent's thrust attacks, they often tend to telegraph what they are going to do, especially when they swing their arms back to make a cut, and you will soon be able to capitalize upon their predictability and your superior blocking.
Don't be in a rush, remember fencing is often likened to chess, you're trying to stay a couple moves ahead of your opponent. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
