Officers

Kjaratan

Landlubber
Okay, i have played this game since 2004, yet i have never used officers because they always died and never helped me with anything... can someone explain how they work and if i can use boatwsain only to fight in sea battle/land fighting, and if i can use navigator/canoneer/quartermaster as only for my ship.

thank you in advance!

On the F2 > Passengers screen - you have a row of officers along the top - all these contribute their appropriate skills to the ship.

in the bottom of the screen are 4 slots - one occupied by the player ( if you click on the player you will get a summary of the max. skill levels contributed by the officers to the ship. )

the 3 other slots at the bottom of the screen are for the officers that are with you on land and fight with you on land and in ship boardings. Only the officers that you place in these slots can be killed in fights.

You can give all the officers better weapons, armour, medicines, items to increase their skills etc on the F2 >character screen - by using the exchange button ( item must be in the players inventory )

So - yes
if i can use boatswain only to fight in sea battle/land fighting, and if i can use navigator/canoneer/quartermaster as only for my ship.

thank you in advance!

You can do this - put the boatswain in one of the slots at the bottom ( as long as he is alive he will also contribute his skills to the ship ) and he will fight with you.

Leave the navigator/canoneer/quartermaster - in the row at the top and you won't loose them - and they will contribute their skills to the ship

Assuming you've got our modpack, then the three selected officers follow you ashore but you can indeed leave officers on the ship who still contribute their skills. :yes

First, are you playing the stock, unmodified game, or are you playing one of our mods? If the latter, which one?

Both in the stock game and in mods, you can control which officers join you in boardings and on land through the "Passengers" screen via F2, as @Talisman said. In the stock game, only those selected to join you will use their skills, but I always found that they died in boarding actions even if they had high "Melee" skill and good equipment, so I always deactivated them using "Passengers" shortly before boarding. They generally did better in land battles and if I was facing a band of four thugs, the officers could at least keep some of them busy long enough for me to kill the thugs before they killed my officers.

In Build 14, you can use the "Passengers" screen both to assign officers to join you and to assign them different jobs, though they'll normally have only the skills associated with their original jobs when you hire them. Also, when on land, you can talk to the officers who are with you, go to "About you", and tell them to sit out the next boarding. They'll still join you on land, though they won't follow you into dungeons, but they won't join you in ship boardings. "Melee" skill is now more useful and an officer with high "Melee" is much more likely to survive battle both during boarding and on land, especially if you give him a decent sword and either battle armour or gold armour. Meanwhile, all officers, including the ones not assigned to join you, will contribute skills according to their jobs and you can see the cumulative effect of all your officers' skills plus your own by going to the "Passengers" screen and clicking on yourself.

hi i'm new here. currently playing build 14 beta 4. how many officers can i have at one time? because my officers kept disappear. the most i have is 14 but when i try to hire more they reduced to 10. my plan to have each type of officers on my main ship and firstmate, gunner and navi for my 3 extra ships.

The maximum number total of passengers is set to 32.

For disappearing officers, please provide more details. Log files and a savegame to test from would be welcome.
I vaguely recall that being reported before, but so far we have never been able to confirm it. :facepalm

can u tell me where can i get the files u need?
After your officer(s) disappeared, post the compile.log, system.log and possible error.log from your main game folder.

Plus any related savegames from the SAVE subfolder in your main game directory.

i can't find .log files in main game folder. and when i try to upload the save file, it says it don't have an allowed extension. can you help? sorry i'm new to this.

There should for sure be .log files in your main game folder if you have the Beta 4 WIP installed!

To upload a save, just ZIP it up first.

i don't know why i don't have them. i'll try to find them. this is the savefile. if u see in passenger there is officer without picture by name comrade at arm if i'm not mistaken.
btw, build 14 beta4 and build 14 beta4WIP is the same thing right?

Wait, do you have a screenshot of this? It is beginning to sound like a bug I fixed months ago.
What modpack version and date do you have in your game main menu?

Also, here are some notes on enabling error logging:
New Horizons FAQ | PiratesAhoy!

build 14 beta4 WIP 3 nov 2015. i still can't find those files. is this setting correct?

tracefilesoff = 0 ; 1 = NO error logs (helps with game performance)

[script]
debuginfo = 1
codefiles = 0
runtimelog = 1
;tracefiles = 0

This is what that part of my engine.ini looks like.

tracefilesoff = 0 ; 1 = NO error logs (helps with game performance)

[script]
debuginfo = 1
codefiles = 0
runtimelog = 1
;tracefiles = 0

I have log files.

i've downloaded the modpack again and reinstalled it, now i have those files. but my saves all not compatible. guess i have to start over again.

If I'm not mistaken, you had your game in Program Files. That may explain a lot of your problems.

for log files problem, yes i think because i installed them in programfile. but the officer disappearing happened when i installed them in D:/ and the game kept force closed.

now i have installed them in C:/ outside programfile, i'll play and see if same problem occurs or not. i'll tell you guys later.

btw, love this modpack. if i have other problems where should i post them?
