I read somewhere that your officers can train you. How is this accomplished? Also, what are typical stats for officers?

They don't actually train you, but instead if they have higher stats than you do in a skill, then their skill will over-ride yours and give you the equivalent of their score. Makes it so you can concentrate on the skills you feel are important for your personal character and let your officers take some of the load so to speak.

Skills for both the PC and your NPC officers range from 1 to 10 with most of them(only the PC can normally get to 10 in any skill). Some officers that you will meet can be trained only in the skills that relate to their 'class'(ie. gunner, bosun/boatswain, first officer, etc.)
