No Rulebook

Hi, I just got the PC version of POTC as a present, but it didn't have a rulebook with it. I think I figured out most of the game, but I have a few questions:
1) On the sailing tactical screen the compass has an outer green ring and an inner blue and yellow ring - what do the blue and yellow parts of the ring represent?
2) How do you get your character to run?
3) Does it bother anyone that the sails never switch sides when your ship tacks or jibes, and that the sails are always luffing?
I'd appreciate any help I could get - thanks.

Since this is the first time I've ever posted anything, I apologize in advance if I screwed anything up.

Welcome to the marvelous world of the PotC, matey!!!

Well, the answer for the first question....the yellow ring is the speed of your ship in knots, the blue is the speed of the wind in knots (always higher than the ship speed, obviously).
It depends of you to choose the command to make your character to run, you can change it in the options....i really dont remember the default for this command, but i guess it is the Shift buttom as always.
Im sorry, but i dotn understand what you are asking in the third question...

Hope i helped ^^

If i understood well your last question, you seems to not like that the sails move when you turn around with your ship. Well, as far as i understand in nautic subjects, it is necessary to move the sails and place it in the right place to receive the wind the best it can, if you dont, you will only get damaged sails and mast, not mentioning the loss of speed....naturally, the game tends to be very realistic, you can see that in the build mods that our modders made for us ^^

i think he's talking about the realism of the sail's movements, actually. what i find rather odd though is that he's saying that the sails don't move. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I didn't mean to stir up any controversy with my last comment, and maybe the minor points I was talking about have been fixed in the mods you have all worked on - I apologize that I haven't had a chance to load the mods yet, I hope to do that tonight.

Let me explain what I meant by my last comment - if the wind is coming in from the right side (starboard side if you want to be techical), the sails are forced to the left side of the ship. If the wind is coming from the left side of the boat, the sails are forced to the right side of the ship. The basic game always had the sails flying on the left side regardless of wind position.
The other thing was that the sails are always flapping. Unless the wind is very light, the only times sails do that is when they are "luffing". Luffing is generally bad, it means the sails are set incorrectly. If the sails are set properly they are taught and show very little movement. The only time they should luff is when the ship points too close towards the wind and the wind hits the back of the sails. On modern sailboats this starts to occur when the bow is less than about 45 degrees off the wind.

I understand that the sails look very pretty the way they are modeled, and I am probably the only one that is bothered by these minor inconsistencies.

Thanks again for your comments.

Oh, now i got it....i totally forgot that the stock game was THAT bad.... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

sorry for my misunderstandment <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> hehehe

and no, matey, you are not the only one bothered by such minor details....if you were, such problems wouldnt be fixed by the mods <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I didn't either <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" /> . That's odd, considering I found every other little irritating thing about the stock game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Do you mean the visual luffing in the fore-aft rigged sails? Lateens and gaffs seem to 'ripple' at all times, instead of drawing, I noticed that. I don't know that anything can be done for it, unless someone can mod the sail animations

Thanks for all the comments.

Yes, I meant the fore-aft type rigging - I have only sailed the Lugger(sp?) that you get when you're brand new at the game.

In real life I have sailed a small gaff rigged boat and I don't remember any significant luffing, but that was many years ago on something much smaller than is modeled in the game. I could certainly believe that on the large ships that have a bunch of interacting sails you could get some rippling - actually you see a little luffing even in a fore/aft rig if the jib is very tight and backwinds the mainsail.

i dont know much about sails, but im studying about it now, my dad will study to take the license of Captain and i will study to take my license of Master and i just started to read a book of meteorology for sailors. Sometime i will understand better how the sails and the lines work exactly in a ship <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

well, i know the positions and purposes of the running and standing rigging on ships, or at least of most ropes (i build ship models with running rigging). i still haven't quite figured out how you're supposed to overhaul a lateen when you've got a jib rigged up and only a halliard at the front of the yard though. it doesn't make sense. you'd have to diconnect the jib halliard for it to work, which seems an overly clumsy way of doing it.
