N00B question

I just recently got this game from a friend and I started playing with the nk mod. My question is, how(or when) can you buy a new ship for yourself besides the Tartane? That is the only ship that the game allows me to buy. I click on all the rest and no buying option is available to me. Do I have to have a larger lvl or rank or something?

Maybe you haven't got enough gold, visit the loanshark or do some quests. And think you can sell your ship for buying a new.

Several questions come to mind regarding your dilemma...

1.) How much money do you have? A lot of the ships available are rather expensive and if you don't have enough money PLUS the `trade-in` of your existing boat (I'm assuming you are still sailing the lugger?), you won't be able to get a new ship.

The prices are, if I recall correctly, in the lower right of the screen of ship attributes that you get when you click on the picture of your desired ship. Should be the number next to a stack of gold pieces.

As CapitainDams suggests, you can visit the loanshark (remember to pay him back!), or do some quests (for instance, for the English governor) - or perhaps some delivery jobs for the merchants... You can also go down into the dungeons and kill off smugglers - you will get their money and their weapons - and you can sell their weapons. You can try to do a smuggling run, buy a lot of something at the store (say, RUM from Oxbay) and sail to a port where that item is considered CONTRABAND (rum is contraband on Douwesen). Go to the tavern and you will find a smuggler there who will set up a meeting with you on a secluded beach. Go there, and you will make a LOT of money - if you aren't caught by the guards!

There are many ways of earning enough money to get a new ship.

2.) Are you trying to buy an *extra* ship? You will not be able to buy an extra ship if you do not have a ship to `trade-in`. You must have a ship to `trade-in`, in order to buy another ship.

3.) How early is it in the game? How experienced are you at sea battles? Hire an officer if you don't already have one (you can find them waiting in taverns, just talk to the seated men), and go out and attack and board a ship - if you can take out all the decks (or they surrender to you), that ship is your prize - and you can assign your officer (if he has some sailing skill) to captain your prize - OR you can take over yourself and put him on your original flagship.

You can sell her for extra $ or trade her in for a different ship...

Thanks all. I really appreciate the warm welcome. I will have to take a look to see exactly how much money a ship is selling for. I just asumed that a buy ship icon would pop up even if I didn't have enough money. I will let you know what my problem was if i figured it out. BTW I got so frustrated that I just took over a schooner(sorry about spelling). Awesome vessel..... I hate the lockups on this game though.
