Cat: We _do_ need a version of <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" /> tipping his hat and bowing, for I'd use one right now. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" /> / <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

For me, I have in descending order of priority:
1. Ship doesn't look evil
2. Ship looks like a _warship_, not a floating scultpure or mural.
Thus while I find a number of 17th century ships quite pretty as _sculptures_, I'd hate to fight from one (not least for the destruction to it that fighting would bring). Tiddly, topheavy things, too. Something like USS Constitution to me says basically: These people have their heads screwed on right, they realize what they need is a _warship_.
Which sums up my philosophy of war in general; to paraphrase Sherman, to prettify war is but to make it acceptable ("grow too fond of it" indeed!*), and that is far worse.
*That being said, there are two ways to read the quote, that: a, war is a thing to be fond of but for the killing, or b. that it is good the killing is plain to keep war as hated as it should be.
Personally I doubt Lee meant the latter, though it is possible.
{Wow, but I ramble on...sorry about the topicjacking... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="
