Losing a fight

Sometimes when I lose a fight, I actually die and the death scene appears, crabs crawling over my corpse....other times I get "saved" by an angel and sent to a tavern room.

What's the meaning of this?
if I am in the middle of a quest and get transported to a tavern room after the fight, do I start over?
I noticed I seem to have lost any gold and significant weapons I had, but are there any down sides in simply picking myself up and continuing?

I save regularly so I usually just reload the last saved point and start again...

If you play it straight and don't reload the savegame, it's supposed to be a challenge to start back up again after you are rescued. You should lose some amount of money, and I don't think you have any crew left and you might not have a ship - or you have just a Tartane - after a sinking...

I'm not clear on that since I don't play it - I have that mod turned off as I'd rather reload a savegame instead of playing the rescue mod... It's just a game interruption to me, and I'd rather just continue on as I was instead of starting anew again...

I always pick up and carry on, happy to have me hide in more or less one piece!
