Is there a list of in-game items and purpose?

Is there a comprehensive list anywhere of what the items in the game do? since I got back into the game again I started wondering what some of the itmes do like the books for example. I checked the "about build" thing on the title menu and it showed me some stuff but it owuld be nice to have a txt file or something i could print out. plus does having more than one item say like the scales make the bonus cumulative or should i just buy extra items of this type to make sure my officers have them as well?

Yeah, I think it's unfortunate that things aren't described better.
Even the perk items description, like gems and mineral that once listed the ability they enhanced, has been changed so you no longer know what they do.

Your best bet is to look at the items in the InitItems.c file.
You can use note pad, but because columns don't line up right, get Notepad++ from Pieters site.

The skill enhancement has been hidden for many items, such as rocks and gems and such. The reason being that the player would get to find these items at random and would suddenly have a magical bonus or hindrance. Naturally the player would not be aware of this and a notification in the items menu would give it away. The player can see the cumulative effects of all his items in the F2>Character screen though. Of course there are also items for which the skill enhancement SHOULD be obvious. These items would include compasses, scales, microscope and other equipment. Books can either enhance or decrease the player's skills, depending on whether it's a good book or not. The item description usually gives a hint on whether the book is good or not. Most items' skill enhancements do not stack, so you only get the enhancement once, even if you have multiple of the items. Some items require a couple before the enhancement takes place. Example would be some rocks: You need three of them and then you get a skill enhancement. You can always give skill-enhancing items to your officers so that they get the enhancement instead. This is especially useful if you have more than one of the items. Since the player does not know what the items do, you would probably sell the items. But they *might* do you more good if you don't sell them, so you need to think twice before you sell anything. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Of course the skill changes can easily be made visible by editing initItems.c.

But they wouldn't know what item did what.
I think most players would not notice any change as the changes are small and cumulative, but not even for the same item as they are not stacked either.

Most would probably sell the items first.

I just wonder what would add the most gameplay value: To show the player straight out and don't make it into a mystery or to only have it as a nice feature for those players willing to pay attention...? Personally I think there should be a mystery for at least some of the items. Actually I would like it if the skill enhancements would be much more logical for the items and that the item description would give a tiny little hint as to the effect of the item. That way the player would be able to *guess* if he'd bother to read the item description.

I like the idea of mystery but as with most gamers we've gotten used to haivng a list of stats attached to an item. Maybe it would be more realistic if there was someone we could take it to to find out like some voodoo priestess or some librarian or something. Maybe even some guy in the dark corner of tavern that would tell us what it did for a price. Then as a captain we would put that info in a captains journal or something that we could refer to later on in our travels.

Might be possible, but it sounds pretty complicated to code in. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
