Is 'Sail Away' command broken?

Is it just me or is the Sail Away command to companions broken?

I issue this order to my cargo ships so they would avoid confrontation and just hopefully head in the opposite direction of the enemy.

But I find this order to be primarily ineffective. I think it has something to do with range. I issue this order and I watch my companion circling around an enemy to fire broadsides at it- that's not what I call sailing away! I think perhaps there is a check that if the enemy is close enough the captain ignores your command and just battles anyway - what's your experience with this?

Sometimes I issue the order and they do in fact sail away but it seems the times it works is when that ship was in safety anyway, it wasn't in danger because it was already far enough away.

Hmm i didn't had such expirience with this. When i tell them to sail away they pick one streight line and go for it ignoring where the enemy was, luckily AI folows me so i save them every time.

I tested the command and have good results doing the following:
-issue orders when the ship is engaged.

I first thought that the ship used a preset choice of escape course (id sailing against the wind if the enemy squadron ships had smaller point of sail, no matter what) but when I started to issue the order when the ship was actually engaged (and not from the start of the battle phase for example) I observed the ship captain select different options depending on what kind of ships he is engaged by. Captains can sail under the wind if they are faster or choose to sail against if they are faster this wind. They can also compose winds etc.

What you witnessed is probably an attempt by the captain to tear down the sails because the pursueing ship is too fast whatever. That is why the ship circles imo.

I also think that if you issue the order from the start, the captain takes its fastest option, leading him to run into opponent ships sometimes.

Issues come when they are several ships pursueing. There can be a mess. And more or less, it leads you to plan an escape course for your companions.

If you dont have a that big squadron, you can flee first until the sea icon appears. At this point, you can swap ships to take command of the other ship and escape from the pursueing ships.

Actually, it was by doing this that I discovered that the sail away option might not be that bad since I often took the same course of actions as the companion captains.

Quality of the captains might also play.

It is NOT broken. Only it's name is mistaken. Its actual name is "Sail directly in the middle of the enemy ships until sunk". Thus the command is working perfectly :dance

LOL

Sounds about right, thats why i use defend me, and i get the hell out of dodge.

Sometimes, most of the time i will attack from a safe distance trying to damage the enemies sails so i can do what i like without the threat of them out pacing me.
