how to sail faster?

Some thing Qs i dunno know;

How do i find out if i was sailing faster or slower?(Wat was the thing tat looked like a compass at the upper right screen wif 2 set of numbers on top of each left and right of the compass?)I see the number keeps changing.

Left # is wind, right is ship. Most of the ships will sail faster with the wind behind them - if you are trying to escape pursuit, just point your ship in the direction the wind arrow is pointing and you should speed up. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
