Powder Monkey
Here's the new guide for the PotC beginner, from start well, and continue better.
I know I have already posted something similar, please cancel, because this will be the definitive guide.
OXBAY (Start)
First of all, when you are in Oxbay, talk with the merchant and the tavern keeper, for get some cargo to carry with your ship, and a chance of a merchant to escort.
I don't tell you that these action will bring a cargo and an escort, but there's a chance of gain some extra without make anything, then, try for these 2.
After the French attack, you will see your ship inthe map: SAVE NOW. This save will be the most important of the entire game, and you must take this save at all costs, because from here you canre-start if something go wrong.
AFTER OXBAY
Don't be like sheeps: the quest panel isn't your master, then not run like idiots to Redmond for alert His Fatness Silehard, or you must follow his side of quest, losing the amusement. My advice is to go at Greenford, or point to a nearby isle (except Falaise de Fleur, of course) for start your fortune, then follow your fantasy and the tracks placed around you. You have a swift and agile ship, You have cannons and mens, and, most important, You have the complete control about Your destiny. In a word, You can choose what life you want, period.
POINTS, ABILITIES, AND FAME
Considering that everyone has the right to decide about his own life, including a semi-historical life in the XVII century New World, I will show my own choices, hoping that can help beginners to find their best way to pirating life.
My first need was about gain, then I did escorts and moved cargos until, with a great ....ehm, arse, in an escort sailing I boarded a pirate barque, letting sink the Victory and taking this large merchant ship, then, I started to move cargos getting a really fabulous 11.000 piastres deal (aye,I had a real large arse, I know, call me Gladstone Duck please, ahr ahr) and this was my option for fame, because I raised my level and my fame in a single shot. Infact, move cargos and escort peoplegive levels and fame, and now i'm became "Bloke" from the "Neutral" in wich I was before.
Now, points and abilities:
My inner desire was to become a good captain and merchant, because I like explore and fight, but I value also the pleasure of comerce, sell and buy, seeing my riches augmenting, slowly but continuously.
When I started the game (tutorial) I have put 2 pts in"Fencing" and 1 ability in "Basic Defence" then after have gained a level I have put 2 Sailing and get "Storm Helmsman", at 3rd put 1 Commerce, 1 Luck and taken Augmented Speed, and now I am at lev. 4 and I have put 1 Sailing and 1 Leadership, and get "Basic Ship Defence".
The result of my slow but continuous work around isles is that now I have a very well defended ship, against tornadoes and also gun hits, more fast that other ships of this class then more capable to exit from improvised attacks, and my character is a good sailor and merchant, then capable to maneuver his own vessel, sell and buy at good prices, and also good at defend hisself with a sword: my actual fame is at level "Bloke"and I'm going to become"Matey".
All this using only regular abilities, game, and working patiently.
Ah, and now my own treasure allow me to pay the complete crew for my barque (more or less around 1.000-1.100 piastres/month) seeking in taverns for officers, and better also my ship with new guns if I want.
Next lesson: how find good officers and mantain happy your crew.
Later, then.
