how do i get ranks?
In the caracter bar it only says "neutral" ?

The "Neutral" designation is your reputation in the game. This can go up or down, depending upon whether you do nice things like rescue maidens from being ravaged in the jungles, or naughty things such as killing someone you probably should not have killed (such as executing a captive captain after you've boarded and plundered and taken his ship).

To raise your repuation, you can do a number of things, rescuing maidens in the jungle, donating money to the church (expensive, and not recommended, LOL!), after you've sunk a ship or a ship sinks near you, you can see men floating in the water - sail over to them and they will be rescued...

"RANKS" are something a bit different - if you wish to go into the service of a country - let's say you want to support the Dutch - go to the Douwesen governor and ask for a letter of marque. You may have to pay for it, but if you take the LOM you are now elligible for rank increases (lieutenant to captain to admiral to knight, &tc) when you complete missions the governor will give you or that you ask for.

After you gain proper rank, the governor will start introducing you to his nieces and MAYBE even his daughter... You will eventually have the option to marry her - and every time you spend time with her <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> your reputation points will be added to...
