Hmm...

There are funny things... i installed the stock game and the mods on my home pc (Vista) and every thing runs perfect.

Now i copied the whole Game Folder from my home pc to my laptop (XP) and now the game crashes as soon as i want to start a new game. Then i tried to load a savegame and... it works without any problems ... but only the save games....not a new game. What could be the reason for this strange "behavior"?

What graphics card do you have? Not an Intel onboard one, right?
<a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=9234" target="_blank">Enable error logging</a> and see what you get in the log files. There might be a clue.

no,no intel on board, i hate Intel <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> The Error log is clear... but how can it be,that the game is running on vista and not at XP, it is the same game which runs perfect on my vista system ? I only copied the game folder from my harddisc with the same files as they are on my Vista pc

My Laptop:

CPU:
AMD Athlonâ„¢ 64 X2 Dual-Core 1 MB L2 Cache

Graphics:
NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT

RAM
DDR2 4GB

What about system.log and compile.log? Is there anything in there?

nope,all empty. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

ALL THE LOG FILES ARE 100% EMPTY? WTF???
There should be at least SOMETHING in there, even if it's not a clue to why it crashes! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
Especially if you DO manage to get all the way into the main menu.
Unless error logging is not working either. Do you have your game installed to Program Files?

I copied it to my Harddisc, path: C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Pirates of the Caribbean

And when i search the Log Files, XP find them but tells me, that the Size of the Files is 0KB.

Perhapes I should copy it again and see if it works then,or I can only play at Vista

Try to put the game in, say, C:\Games\Pirates of the Caribbean and see if that works. Maybe there's some stupid security measures preventing it from working right. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

I've found that some games won't run properly unless they've been "installed" which creates some registry entries. Install the stock game first, then copy the new game files over to the same location. Make sure all the file paths are correct.

PotC works fine for me if it hasn't been "installed". I could probably actually put my whole folder on an external hard drive and play it elsewhere.

My stock PotC is on a external hard drive, works fine without needing anything in the registry. I could even play PotC on my new labtop just by launching the engine.exe of the main computer from the network places...
Besides, I think there isn't much at all in the registry, even if you install the game proprely.

Indeed. I think I checked once and it's just a single line to inform your computer that the game is on there and to enable to Uninstall feature.

Depends on the speed of your network or hard drive. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Thats pretty much what I've found, across the entire series of games.

I'm able to move any version of a Storm engine based game from place to place, and the only thing funny that happens is when you run the setup.exe, it forces you to direct it to the correct location for the engine.exe you are setting up for.

Other than that, as long as the hardware works for it, the game runs perfectly without installing first.

It seams it was a copy/past error. Just copied it again and every thing runs perfect now. Can't say what exactly it was but now it works fine...perhapes i should take a extern harddisc for things like this.

Thanks for the help :)

Ah, good. Don't you love errors that correct themselves? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

As for playing it on an external hard drive, keep in mind that even the fastest will be slower than playing on the internal hard drive.

You're welcome. Glad to hear it is working now. Enjoy! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
