Three hits on a mast brings er down.
That is in code I don't remember, but Hook knows.

It's three hits from roundshot, or 5 hits from chain. I don't remember where it's applied, but those are the numbers.

why five hits from chain? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> i think it should be less. those things where made for taking masts down. it just doesn't seem right. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

That indeed sounds pretty odd. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

BTW: When is a hit considered a hit on the mast? When one of the cannonballs REALLY hits near the mast? So if you want to dismast a ship, you can really take aim for the masts? That would be quite awesome. Or is it handled differently?

you definatly need to hit the mast itself! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> or at least in my own experience. if you aim at the correct width, you have a rather large chance of shooting off a mast eventually.

Chainshot does not hurt a mast much by hitting it directly. What happens is, chainshot will take out the standing rigging that supports the mast. A mast with damaged standing rigging cannot hold as much sail, and at some point any amount of sail will take out the mast.

The game models this by having the chainshot reduce the effectiveness of the sails, shown by holes in the sails. Actual holes are little more than cosmetic in sails.

Roundshot will have more effect on a mast that it hits than chainshot will. Roundshot has less effect on the sails themselves, as shown by damage percentages in the spyglass, for example.

If your intent is to dismast a ship, you're better off using roundshot and manually aiming for specific masts. If you just want to slow a ship down, chainshot is better, and autoaiming will work just fine. Given the increased number of hits on the sail area with autoaiming of chainshot, I'd suggest keeping the numbers as they are, with 3 roundshot or 5 chainshot hits taking out a mast.

There are damage values in the sails folder...You can make shot less effective...but that sword cuts both ways.

But I personally think they are fine the way they are. I played with them but could never improve the " balance " that already exist .
