help needed on a few things

Sailor Apprentice
First off I must say BRAVO to the people who modded this game. I started using the mods at Build 8 or 9 and just last week I came back here and found you are up to 13. I am now playing on the higest difficulty level on the alpha 13 build and i love it. Its a little buggy but I can't complain cuz you guys did a great friggin job. When I saw that there are more islands and stuff I was jumping for joy. Anyway...

I just had a few questions I needed answers to:

1. When I take a prisoner and he is in my cargo hold with a ransom price, how do I collect the ransom? I have a few guys in there worth a lot and they say "No Nation". Where do I go to collect on them? I'm a pirate with a bad rep, does that matter?

2. I've noticed that after a few tries trying to smuggle my ship is recognized when i arrive at an island even if i fly thier flag and it says they should be friendly. Is that normal, kind of like "Oh thats his ship with our flag FIRE!!!"? I also noticed that if I change ships I can smuggle again for a little while until they recognize my new ship. Is that how it works? Do I have to get a new ship every now and then so they don't recognizze me or it all based on reputation?

3. Sometimes when i'm fighting and a ship surrenders the "map" icon comes up and i never get the option to board to take over the ship from the captain. Is this a bug? Usually when this happens I'm out of grappling range but even after coming along side all i get is the map icon and no hook icon. Is more of a pain in the arse than anything else because after a long battle I;d like something for my troubles. It only happens once in a while

Thanks in advance and again GREAT JOB WITH HTE BUILDS!!!! These builds are friggin great

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> there and welcome aboard.

Yeah, it's come along way hasn't it.

Re:

1. I'm guessing you're checking him out in your passenger menu. You used to be able to ransom captives here, however, not anymore. In sea mode, when you're in port on your ship, use the menu to go to your deck and you'll find your captives there. Now you can talk to them directly and you'll find that the dialogue options are there for you to collect ransoms, recruit, release, etc.

2. Not sure about this one. Whilst I smuggle occassionally, I haven't done so enough to notice any detrimental effects beyond any of my other "raiding" activities.

3. It's most likely that these are ships friendly to your current flag/nation status and that they have struck their colours to a third party enemy.

Hope that helps a little.

Cheers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Thanks. Yeah the game sure has come a ong way. I'm glad there are people out there with the time that can mod games like this. It breaths new life into it

3) Confusing one thats being worked on. When a ship strikes colors, you have no idea to whom. And if they dont surrender to you, you cannot board them (pretty stupid eh?). Anyhow... its a known bug.

Thanks.

If Hat perseveres with the new boarding rules, in the end release we'll have the ability to board ANY vessel that stroke colors. Personally, that's the way it should be. As Hat (i think) said:

Imagine the case when you approach the vessel, and the crew on the deck starts shouting "Avast! we surrendered to the other guy!! You cannot board us!!!"

Funny, eh?

They should put that in the game instead ROFL. I'd rather get a laugh out of it than not be able to board the ship lol. thats pretty funny. Another funny thing I found in the game was late last night when i was on deck talking to my captives and one went on and on whinning about stuuf and one of my options was "Shut Up". It made me LOL. I kept picturing my pirate rolling his eyes while saying it.

Ships that have surrendered in a multi-nation battle, and which you can't board, are ships that are friendly with you to begin with, or are at least neutral to you.
The game prevents you from boarding them by accident, and ruining your reputation with those nations.
This is especially important if you plan on visiting islands and trading or dealing with other nations Governors.

Do you really want to capture ally and neutral ships?

If you wanted to plunder anyone, you can attack "any" ships at sea, thus making them and the nations they represent, your enemy.
If their icon is red, then when they surrender you can board them!

If the game allowed you to just go around plundering any ships in battle, friend or foe, without any negative consequences of being a Pirate, then it would be one giant cheat!

We'll burn that bridge when we get to it. In the mean time, let's get it where we can board surrendered ships and get rid of a major annoyance. If you want to implement another way to get rid of this annoyance, I'm sure we'd love to have it. Just don't remove surrendered ships entirely.

If I'm sailing under an English flag, and board an English ship which has surrendered, then England will thank me for returning their ship and not letting it fall into enemy hands. They'll even pay me for returning it and let me have all the cargo that was on board. Heck, it should even raise my reputation! But if I allow that ship to sink instead, only plundering the cargo, then my reputation should suffer. This should happen with any surrendered friendly ship.

If an enemy ship surrenders, to anyone else, it should be fair game. No repercussions there.

Boarding a neutral surrendered ship should change your relation with that nation, and your reputation.

There are other ways to deal with this major annoyance. If you can't think of any, I certainly can. And if you don't implement a solution first, I'll eventually get around to it myself. Or someone else will.

I understnad what you mean, I just wish there was some sort of mechanic in the game that would give us the option to board and maybe a pop up saying "This ship surrendered to SO AND SO and if you board you will hurt your rep with THIS NATION or something to that effect

At least a temporary 'band aide' would be to simply NOT notify the player about a struck ship if they cannot board them with the current way the code handles bording.

If they strike to the players advantage, then a "Cheer! Hooray!" should be sounded with the notice.

Otherwise, let them be silent and sit in the water.

Then hopefully all these people won't come here with this issue to report!

The surrendering ships is a rather complicated mod that I think was never finished entirely. Or it was finished, but it was finished before Pirate_KK's raise-the-flag mod (raise any flag you like) was made, so with that mod, things got rather complicated and the surrendering code was never modified to work entirely right together with the raise-the-flag code. If anybody is willing to look into this, please do so. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />
