gameplay question

Lanark

Landlubber
as reading the threads here in the forum i often see some things that i don´t know how
the player made it. so i made this short list of questions.

1. some had huge fleets of level 1 ships, how do you feed your sailors?!
i once had a fleet of two brigantine and had massive problems getting enough food
the shop´s didn´t have enough food to buy :shrug

2. some had compagnions and/or officers where all (or nearly all) skills where at 100
how do you get them so far? did everybody already played the current game so long?
any special training to get the npc´s better? special mod? cheat?
in my game the npc´s level not too fast. my navigator for example had 50 Nav when i hired him,
i had about 20. now i´m up to 48 and he just got to 53 oder 54.

3. how do you use your fleets in battle? ok, a fleet of 4 lineships is nice, but
do they act intelligent and usefull?
with my 2 brigantine fleet i ordered the other ship to attack
but it just stayed at range and fired from time to time.
also it can´t board an enemy ship, always looses (sailors, weapons all on board).

1. Yes, feeding your sailors can be a problem(I don't know how Prelacter do it with his man-o-war fleet-he has around 4500men-hell they eat 450 a day!)but I don't understand why would you have a prob feeding them. You would have around what?300-400men altogheter? That is 30-40rations per day...
I think you better check out your trade tab or else get them price lists from bartenders and check them regularly so you will know where to steer your fleet in case of a famine.
I think(and it is realistic)cities on bigger landmass always have more food than towns on small island.
Fort de France I think is an exception though.

2. Well I can't really help u with that only 1 of my companion is able to steer a class1 ship yet(he had 80nav when I recruited him, but hes with me for a long time now).
I think as your level rises so does the officers nav skill available for work.
Advice: Man of Honor and Hero rep officers are very hard to please!!!!If u put them in charge with a Bad or worse loyality they will leave your fleet taking your ship.(I think u can find threads about how to please them, I just stick to them bloody assasins :doff )

3. I found them sometimes very useful sometimes utterly useless :whipa .
First of all make sure they do have a decent cannon/accuracy for shooting or/and grappling/defense for boarding.
If u order them to attack a ship sometimes they having great difficulty to sink a sloop with a lineship and a corvette but most of the time they do they job if the targeted ship is a lower class.(good tactic there if u want them to sink ships load them with bombs ONLY or destroy masts load them with knippels ONLY)
If you order them to defend each other or defend you, well sometimes they do it right sometimes they don't...
About boarding: sometimes they board a ship without order sometimes they don't even if you order them to do so :whipa
I remember one of my companion with a fully upgraded corvette decided that he would board this galleon.
The result was that he swapped ships because the galleon had a cargo full of brick and he thought what a loot!!!
But sometimes they do it in a good way-board it-loot it-sink it.
The most important that your officers should have a good grappling/defense otherwise they will lose even if boarded ship has far less soldiers.(example your officer got 32 grappling and the enemy ship's captain has 58defense your companion barely stand a chance on even ground)And if your man has high g/d then its likely that he and his little team will succesfully board a ship and massacre everyone on board even outnumbered :ixi

Oh yes and DO NOT tell them to sail away-they are likely to get rid of their cargo including gold and silver as well :modding

Baha. =P
before i made my fleet of 4 Man-of-Wars, I went around boarding lots of ships, and i would ONLY take food, then id sell the food to Certain citys, Such as Port Royal, Bridgetown. (Not random towns, towns i know where exactly they are) - i kept doing this until the shops had at LEAST 20K food in them (Takes quite abit of time, but worth it) Then when i begun to make my fleet id take over a town (Port Royal) which had all the food, and then id buy the food and such to stock up each ship of my fleet. - Now when ever the shops would drop to 5K food, i'd put my 3 Man of wars in the Port controller, then go out and get some more food to stock the shops back up to 20K+.

This may seem like allot of work but it works nicely for me, and i havent had any trouble yet.
- Also, Dont go over your maximum amount of Crew member, Either stays at the max or go below. - Dont upgrade your crew space either.

I would go over the max crew for 1 reason only: the ship will have better speed and manuverability :onya
Just make sure u have enough money or food and rum to keep them happy ;)

Aye, But food and rum runs out a hell of allot faster in my experience, You find yourself sailing out in world map view traveling to a distant city and half your food has gone in the process!
