Game refusing to start.

Hi guys, long time no see I guess. I've recently picked PotC up again (or would like to). My problem is that the Engine refuses to start, giving me the error I've attached a screenshot of. If anyone could offer a solution or upload his/her dx8render.dll I would be most grateful. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

BTW, I am using Vista 32bit and the current screen is of a clean unmodded install, but I had the same error with Build 13 installed the previous day.

Thanks, trying that at the moment. Would it being an Ubisoft version instead of the Bethsoft one matter?

nope mine is ubisoft version and im running fine on Vista 32bit

Make sure to turn off the windows side Bar (I.e. the gadgets on your desktop) It really causes trouble when the clock pops in front of the game every second as the clock updates.

thanks

Thanks for the tip <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

@SuperDurnius: How would I go about uninstalling DirectX btw? Tried googling but no luck. Sorry for my noobishness.

<b>edit:</b> Did a clean install of PotC again and installed the Nov08 redistributable of DirectX, same error.

You don't need to uninstall it... simly install new one ontop... He checks all *.dll's and if there is some that are missing (or older version), setup simply writes those...

Yep, did just that, and the error persists. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

what directX you installed? becouse error shown in your screenshot is about directX 8. But some games (don't shure about PotC) req directX 7, even if you already have directX 9...

I installed the November '08 Redistributable (<i>directx_nov2008.exe</i>), which is 9.0c I think. Tried installing the DX on the PotC disc beforehand but it told me I already had a newer version, predictably.

Try searching google/downloading/installing:
DirectX 7
DirectX 8
DirectX 9
DirectX 10 (Only for vista).

If when installed all of those, game won't start... ehm... don't know what to next...

Tryed updating graphic card driver?

Tried installing dx8.1, still the same. Drivers are the newest for my card (Catalyst 8.12). Could you (or anyone) try uploading your dx8render.dll from your /MODULES folder if the size is different than 274 432 bytes? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />

Thanks, although that was the same version I think. No luck still. I have to go out now but will continue bashing my forehead against the screen when I get back - will keep you posted with results.

<b>edit:</b> my system.log:

Problem solved, or at least I've got in once. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> I think the problem was that I was trying to force it to use V-Sync through Ati Tray Tools.
