Hi all,
I'm back playing POTC after a year off, and have Build12 installed.

Is there a way to tell the game that the main quest is finished? I just want to
freely roam around and not have to follow any required steps. I hate HAVING to do stuff.

You don't HAVE to do anything. Once Oxbay is captured by the French, you should walk up to the governor's residence in Redmond once. Then, once you're done with that, just do whatever you like and pay no attention to the quest. With Build 12 installed, there's plenty to do outside the main quest. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

This works, but has the disadvantage that the French are hostile to you. I'd suggest playing through to the liberation of Oxbay, right after your character gets out of jail. Then the French and the Pirates are both neutral. The game should be a bit more open at that point.

There's another reason to play a bit further. Virgile Boon, the captain of the Oiseau (the ship delivering munitions from Falaise to Oxbay), carries 1,000,000 gold pieces. If you can kill him on land, then get away, you have some good starting capital.

Killing him is easy. Getting away is somewhat more difficult. Here's how you do it.

Moor at Octopus Bay, not at the Falaise port. Make your way through the jungle to the city. Do whatever is necessary there, go to the port, then save the game. Look around and make sure there are no French soldiers nearby. When you are ready to sail off with Boon, kill him instead. You get 1 million gold from him. To get away, run towards the city gates. The soldiers will run down the steps after you, so you run up the hill beside the steps to avoid them. Go through the gates, up the stairs there, and turn left. You'll have to dodge a few attacks here, do your best. Try not to get into a fight. Run through the town to the gates at the end, and run directly to the gates. The soldiers will "politely" move out of your way in preparation for attacking you. Go through the gates, go back through the jungle to Octopus Bay, and you're home free. The fort cannot fire on you there.

The French turn hostile when you kill Boon, but they'd turn hostile after you sunk the Oiseau anyway, so you're not losing anything.

Enjoy!

Damn i just past that bit, become a pirate get a bad rep then go to the pirates and talk to the chef. sink and capture ships.

Arrr! Thanks mates.

It turns out that Ewan Glover, captain of the Albion (taking troops to Oxbay) can also be killed for another million. The code says Wilfred, who is your point of contact to land the troops, also carries this much money, but I haven't figured out how to kill him to harvest his money yet.

What do you do with that much money? Well, the loan shark pays interest on money left with him. The interest is based on your commerce skill. The higher your commerce skill, the more interest he pays, up to a maximum of 11% per month. You might consider hiring a good quartermaster if you don't want to sink skill points into commerce yourself. And people didn't think the loan shark was useful! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

There is another solution & that is taking the storm option in the 1st lot of dialogue you have with Malcolm Hatcher,that way you dont have to worry about any ' Quests ' .

<img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b395/goldenlab/POTC/StormConvo.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

All I do is when I go to Redmond is run or walk past the Guards outside the Governor's mansion & have a short convo with the guard & then I'm free to do whatever.

Doing the ' Storm ' sequence has more advantages because then you can get a LOM from the main French Port & sail into Oxbay without firing a shot because you will be friendly with the French.

I spend most of my time just doing Treasure Quests & sinking or boarding whatever ship I want, or even sacking other towns.

The amount of " Free Play " you have is only limited by your imagination.

true true, there are a lot of none main quests to do in POTC.

Even more thx to the build mod.

Here is yet another way of starting a new game without the hassles of dealing with getting blown outta the water at Oxbay & without do the Storm option.

That is by selecting a different nation at the start like below.
<img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b395/goldenlab/POTC2/Start4.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Then having the normal convo with Malcolm Hatcher.

<img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b395/goldenlab/POTC2/Start3.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

You will start at Falaise de Fleur instead of Oxbay.

<img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b395/goldenlab/POTC2/FdeF.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Your logbook will read the normal stuff except it'll say Falaise de Fleur.

<img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b395/goldenlab/POTC2/Start2.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Or you can choose one of the other nations & start somewhere else again.
