Davy Jones

Landlubber
In another post, we got to talking abot the idea behind a Davy Jones and Flying Dutchman mod. I wanted to get it into the brainstorm area so all could see what's beedn discussed. Here's some ideas I had. In the film, Jones could only set foot on land once every ten years. Obviously ten game years is quite a while so mabey once every pay period the player can go ashore himself. If the player has to go on land any othe time, he has to send one of his officers in his stead.

Which leads to another thought. Becoming Davy as an optional side quest. Find the Dead Man's Chest and the key. When you do, you have some options. 1) Command Jones get you an explicit amount of money for his heart back. 2) Allow jones to join you and sail aroud with the Dutchman as another ship in your fleet. If you do this, you'll have to doge his lackey every so often as they try to steal back thier captains heart. However, the advantage of keeping the original Davy is that he can raise your sunken ships from the depths in the middle of battle with a full crew. After the battle, the ghost crew disappears and you must get a real crew when you make port 3) Stab the heart and kill Davy Jones. If you do this, you have even more options. You can become Davy yourself, directly commanding the Dutchman (and the kraken?). You can pay one of your officers to become Davy, which is like option 2 but without the theft attempts; or you can send the Dutchman to the depths and collect a large bouty from all the nations who are now greatful.

Obviously, the quest for the chest would have to be grossly difficult, but the end reward will make it worth it.

"morgan terror" mentioned: "the tentacle beard wouldn't be that hard i think. just use barbossa, make his beard grey, and give his beard thick lines of black to make it look like a tentacle beard. his crab-claw-arm would be a problem though. not to mention his legs."

Like I said, It's an idea. Take it for what it's worth. I know I would be psyched about a Davy Jones mod. Keep it cool pirates! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

Also, I'm new so could someone tell me what and or where the "ftp" is? It seems to be where all the cool add-ons are.

the FTP server can be downloaded at pieter's site. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

i think we should come up with a quest to get the chest first. it would be a lot easier to use the skeletons for davy jones' crew, because it would be a lot of work making the crew from the film, if even possible at all. this whole idea would probably take more than a year, considering all the work, but it would be great fun being able to do those things.

i have an idea that might make the flying dutchman submersible. use the sinking animation to submerse, and reverse it to emerse. i have no idea how that could be done however without the ship being lost forever. maybe the ship should simply sink, as it should (but you would have the problem of all the stuff floating around), and then respawn a completely new one to make it emerse again. if you would have the ship, you would sink, go to the world map, head to a distination, and respawn there. i doubt that it would be possible to sail like this to another island in 3D sailing though.

i have an idea for the quest: at a certain point in the quest, the flying dutchman seemingly sinks. (lots of confusion in dialogue and such) if you have the chest, a crewmember would run up to you telling that the flying dutchman rose from the sea and is attacking your ship, or something like that. in the battle, it would be logical that davy jones would try to board your ship to get the heart back, but as AI never does that unless you're already within range, it would be exeptable to presume that he would try to sink your ship and fish the chest out of the ocean, because the chest floats. if you board him, (it would be handy to let the flying dutchman have lots of HP, so the player would see that as the easy way to defeat it, but it could always be a choice to sink it) you would negotiate with davy jones about the heart, giving the options that sauron mentioned.

This sounds like a nice idea and parts of it might be possible. But I think one of the main problems is that you need coders, modelers and skinners to work on Davy Jones, the Flying Dutchman and it's crew. Who is going to do that? Also: Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman aren't exactly the easiest things to make for the game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

These are all great ideas. Supprisingly, there aren't many pics of the Dutchman out there. I did find one attached below. I've seen what you modders can do and all your skill is evident in Build 13. If we can come up with a solid quest then I believe the rest can fall into place over time. And time is essential. Build 13 was YEARS in the making, and the quality shows. We just need to take our time and do it right so that when when we're done, we can say "Damn, that's some hot stuff!" I'm afraid I'm not much help in the modding world, but I am chock full of idea's and concepts. I'm also up for play-testing anything you need me to.

This is one of the most well organized and sucessful mod sites I've seen for any game. If we work together, we can make PotC better. Again.

i've seen one that was much more closer. i found it between the images on google under 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.

Thanks. I guess I was to specific in my search. Heres some better pics:

I also found a site with a lot of Dutchman pics. Just scroll past the pics of the people.:

The more I see these pics, the more I want to sail her. I am officially praying to God for modders to consider this project.

I hope these help. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

cool! great details! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> i noticed that the flying dutchman doesn't have a bowsprit. no wonder it's a bit slower than the black pearl. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> that stern is going to be near impossible to make! i'm rather worried about the amount of thingies (what are they called? you know, the things that make up the model) would be in the ship in-game. the ship could cause some serious lag. i think the ship could be based upon the new black pearl model. the stern should be made bigger and the bowsprit should be replaced by a broken-off one, and guite a lot of details added, but the shape is rather similar. i also noticed that it has one stern gallery more than the pearl. it's basically the stern that needs the most work. of course, it doesn't need to be an exact replica. nobody can remember all the details by simply lloking at the film. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> you could basically even make it simmetrical. the demon heads around the cannons can be the same as well. i think the ship should have six bow cannons in two groups of three very close together to make the triple-guns. kazeite made custom cannons for the new black pearl 2.0 for instance.

Faces for gun ports.
Now there is an idea for the chaser gun ports of any ship skin!

It's tempting, but... no. I have ship's blueprints. I have many detailed photos of the <i>Dutchman</i> from the movie. Why would I want to make it innacurate? This mod doesn't deserve such half-assed jobs, thank you very much.

If I were to build <i>Dutchman</i>, I would make sure she's as close to the "real" thing as possible. Making <i>Dutchman</i> from the <i>Black Pearl</i> would require remodelling and reskinning of many things anyway, making such endeavour inpractical - it would certainly be easier to make it from scratch.

The thing that stuck out to me was the figurehead. The Grim Reaper whith his scythe wrapped aroud the pulpit.

The thing to remember about the <i>Dutchman</i> is what era she's from. PotC takes place during the Golden Age of Sail. The real Age of Sail was from about 1570-1865. If Jones had been around long enough to become a legend, it's safe to say his ship was built in the late 1400's, around the time Columbus found the New World. I would suggest using models similar to the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. I actually notice that the stern is similar to the 'War Galleon' in the game.

Also, in the film, it's mentioned that the <i>Dutchman</i> catches her prey because she sails <u>faster</u> against the wind. That might be a feature to include. It would have tactical advantages as well as disadvantage (as we saw in the movie).

The <i>Flying Dutchman</i> from the movie is based on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasa_Ship" target="_blank">the Vasa</a>, so I'd venture a guess that it's from 1600's <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

LOL. The Vasa wasn't very good at floating, similar to the Flying Dutchman which sinks all the time as well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Would it be possible to make a Flying Dutchman model with the general shape of the ship, but with all the crazy details added in the texture rather than modeled in 3D? That would mean a much smaller hit on FPS and might make the modeling much easier. The only problem I see occurring is that making the texture will be harder than making textures for ordinary ships... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

the flying dutchman is indeed most similar to the war galleon. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> i noticed that already. the faces around the gunports are very flat in the movie. i don't think that they have to be in 3D, although it would look nicer. the broken-off bowsprit should be made in 3D. attached to the ship i mean, without a seperate locator.

as for the quest, i know of two pieces of the movie that could be very well used for the quest. i found them on youtube and they are perfectly suited for this. i think that the quest should be an add-on for the main quest, so if you've finished the main quest, you begin the 'dead man's chest' quest.

i'll see if i can find the links to the film fragments. note: this would NOT be copywright infringement! i don;t know how it isn't, but somehow it's allowed to use these film fragments as long as they aren't changed or put into a different movie.

this one COULD be usefull. i've no idea how to download it however. maybe it's on video.google.com as well. it is possible to download them there, if they are there.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYYM8voy8Xo" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYYM8voy8Xo</a>

here's another one: (as an introduction for the battle agianst the flying dutchman)

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09-zzcwvdOU&search=pirates%20%20of%20the%20caribbean%20dead%20mans%20chest%20jack%20sparrow%%2020will%20turner%20johnny%20depp%20orlando%20bloom%20keira%20%20knightley" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09-zzcwvdOU...%20%20knightley</a>

Perhaps, if we can't get the sinking <i>Dutcman</i> to work we can use these clips. I think it would be a cool bonus if, once you have the <i>Dutchman</i> you can use her underwater ability to pop up right next to your target in place of the fast-travel option.

I do agree that the barnicles and such would be easier to add as a skin rather than build them into the ship herself. I have some limited skinning expierence so I'll see what I can make. Will update by Wendsday on how it's going. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

i'm curious about the result, but what i meant was: use the war galleon and add bits and pieces to it to make it look like the flying dutchman. but i'd like to see what the results will be from your attempt.

Again, my expierence is limited ad I've never done a skin for s hip. The challenge is making it look good far away and close up. I would encourage any other skinners who read this to try as well as I'm not that good. But I will try cause I want to sail her so badly. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

In my opinion, making basic hull shape is the easiest part of the skinning. It's the "adding bits of pieces" stuff that is rather long and teodious. With that in mind, and having actual mock-up blueprints, I'd rather make entire <i>Dutchman</i> from scratch.

But, that's me. <b>Sauron</b>, try your approach, by all means. We may achieve satisfactory result, which would certainly make our lives a whole lot easier <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

(And, as VCO ships show us, it is possible to use transparency maps in ships skins <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> )

Thakns. I'm trying to use colors from real pictures of the <i>Dutchman</i> but my true enemy is time as I have other things going on. Kazeite, I would certainly like to see what you can come up with. Your work on the <i>Pearl</i> is nothing short of amazing.

My other problem is, my computer was formated recently by a hacker. While I recovered some data, most of my editing software is G-O-N-E! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> STUPID HACKERS!!!!

Myonly options are <i>Paint</i> (which is usless for skinning generally) and an old demo of Photoshop. Since we moved recently, I haven't been able to dig out my software and get it going again. But I'll still try cause damn it I want the <i>Dutcman</i>!

Thanks for your support.

you need some security programs. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> you can find links to free downloads and a free scan that removes problems at the 'enemy sighted!' topic.

Thanks. I know...now! I've got better security now. I do have a question I'd like everyone's opinion on. If you could only buy one program for skinning and texturing what would it be? Looking for some better software.

Oh and someone mentioned "3Ds max"! I can't imagine why they feel it's woth more than 3 grand, but there's no way i could afford it even if i wanted to. Which I do!
