Can somebody help me, please?

Ulrich

Landlubber
G'day,

I used to play Age of Pirates but was always a little disappointed with the lack of customization. So I decided to give POTC a go, with this build mod thingo. I've got a few questions I can't find an answer to, though.

1. How alike is POTC to Age of Pirates? I was led to understand they're basically the same game with a few different bits.

2. How customisable is POTC? Can you change your character's clothes, customise your ship, etc?

3. Can you still attack ports and colonies in POTC?

4. Can anybody actually tell me what this nebulous Build Mod does? I can't actually find a feature list anywhere and I'm curious.

5. Is it the actual Caribbean you sail in? I was reading a review that mentioned all these islands that don't actually exist. Are all the colonies accurate like in AOP?

Thanks, any help would be great.

Hi, I too played AOP when it came out but came back to this game and build mod 13 final as in my opinion this game has better playability than AOP. I have recently started doing a little modding with the help from the guys on these boards and so far I have custom made a ship from two existing ships, rewritten a few incorrect walkfiles and even added some ships from AOP (which I intend to add all). You can even create your own ship or characters in a 3D modeling program. Character wise you can change your characters appearance and even your officers appearance using the tailor shops in game, but you can select your starting character at the begining if you want (even Jack Sparrow). You can attack colonies but not like AOP (someone is working on making that possible though). The build mod increases the games playability greatly, adding quests, ships, new characters and realistic functions like the need for gunpowder to fire ships guns (which also sound realistic) and also allows you to sail the Manowar and the Black Pearl as in the unmodded game you can only sail the Manowar at the end just before the cedits. The map is very good not the real caribbean but it has had islands added and has been enlarged somewhat. I reccommend you get build 13 final you won't be disapointed. There is a build 14 but I don't know much about it as I prefer build 13, anyway someone may tell you about that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Age of Pirates was like Sea Dogs 3. AoP uses an improved version of the PotC engine, so the graphics are somewhat better. Gameplay-wise, there's some features in AoP that are not in PotC and some features that are in PotC that are not in AoP. However, PotC is being heavily improved, while AoP is not. Which ends up in PotC being the better game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

There is also many different ships in the game (150 in my own game now). At the moment they are not customizable, but a mod for this does exist. However, this mod is incompatible with the Build mod right now and would require some heavy work to be implemented. We hope to add this mod at some point.

Can you still attack ports and colonies in POTC?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->You can attack forts and get a lot of money that way, but you can't actually capture the towns in the current game. However, Pirate_KK made a mod that is in Build 14 Alpha 8 WIP 1 with which you can also capture towns, give them to another nation or take it for yourself. You can also attack the forts from the land side in some towns and that way you get to meet some important officials in there who can provide valuable services and can, even in Build 13, give the colony to another nation.

Many more characters, quests, ships, features.
<a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2378" target="_blank">Build 11 ReadMe</a>: This is the feature list for Build 11. A lot more has been added since then.

Check out these pages for a general idea of what has been added, but keep in mind there is a lot more. After installing the mod, there will be a Build 11 ReadMe, Build 12 ReadMe and Build 13 ReadMe in the <i>buildinfo</i> folder in your main game directory. Build 13 is the most up-to-date stable version. We are working on Build 14 and we have so far created Build 14 Alpha 8 WIP 1, but it is not stable and not recommended for somebody who just wants to play the game. The Alpha versions are mainly for testing, though Build 14 Alpha 6 is said to be pretty playable as well.

Is it the actual Caribbean you sail in? I was reading a review that mentioned all these islands that don't actually exist. Are all the colonies accurate like in AOP?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->In the original game, there were only unexisting islands (Redmond, Oxbay, Isla Muelle, Conceicao, Douwesen, Quebradas Costillas and Falaise de Fleurs). In Build 13 there have been several real islands added, being Hispaniola, Cuba, Saint Martin, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Cayman and Turks, with the original unexisting islands being kept as well. In the unreleased and unfinished Build 14 Alpha 8 WIP 2 version, there is even a mod to rename the unrealistic islands to existing ones, so that way you really do get to sail in the actual Caribbean. The only difference is that some of the island shapes don't resemble the real islands, but it's the best we can do for now.

I hope this answers some of your questions. Feel free to ask more if you have them. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

you forgot tortuga, which is part of hispaniola, and (SPOILER)the isla de muerte(SPOILER). despite the bugs, i highly recommend using build 14 alpha 6, or installing the directsail mod on build 13 yourself, which is pretty easy and works fine.

True. Those also exist. Note that Isla de Muerte is only in Build 14 Alpha 6 and up, but can't actually be accessed because you need the Aztec Compass item for that and you can not get that ingame in Alpha 6. You CAN in the PB Modifications update that is still available somewhere and also in Alpha 7.
