Build problems/I really did try!

Okay, here goes. I loaded the build 13 and I followed the instructions from the download file. I ran the RunMe.bat file and the step #3 says to open PROGRAM\Worldmap\worldmap.c and set MAPSPEED to 1.0. That sounds easy enough, if you know what you are doing, which I don't. I don't know how to open that one or the next one, which requires me to open BuildSettings.h

I am getting closer to being fully loaded, but I am now at a standstill. I tried everything that I knew of, which admittedly isn't much, but I just don't know how to do all of this computer stuff. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> Any help? And yes, I will be more patient this time. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/user_comment.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="user_comment.gif" />

You can open all .c files and buildsettings.h with windows notepad <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Trying! Trying! Trying!

Do I open the game, the build, or neither before trying to open these files with notepad. I have gone under Start, then clicked on Notepad. Then I went to "look in All Files" under desktop since that is where I saved the build at. That doesn't work. I'll keep trying until I hear from someone. Sorry that I am so computer illiterate.

Use Windows Explorer to browse your folders in Program files.

It should look something like this when you get there:

Thanks for your help Laz. Bava was also very helpful through PM. I managed to find my way to the Program files and the Buildsettings files. I have never browsed through program files before and definitely never made changes to them. I just didn't know how to get to them. Once I got there it was easy. I made the changes and got everything ready on my home PC, but my laptop was acting up and I will try that again today. Still haven't had the chance to actually play yet. Again, thanks for everyone's help and patience. Remember, I am really just a Cabin boy masquerading as a Captain. Boy will he be pissed when he gets back to the ship!!

Still thinking about joining with the "dark side"? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Sure, as long as I get to come back to reality. I am looking forward to playing one of these days. By the way, it was rude of me to dig at you about the words I was using. As bad as I am with the computer, I shouldn't be ragging on anyone.

Eh.. no problem. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

Does the game run at all yet? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_confused.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="icon_confused.gif" />

YES! YES! YES!

I got the game running on my laptop with all the changes I wanted in the BuildSettings. It took awhile to go through the changes in options, but I think I got them where I want. Does anyone have any particular recommendations about assinging keys that they have found to be convenient?

I am going home to try it on my PC, but I am not expecting any problems there. Thanks again to everyone for the help.

i never change any keys. no matter what you do, they will always remain inconvenient somehow. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Thanks Morgan. I did make some changes to use the arrow keys for forward/block/dodge/& shoot. I changed the unsheath/sheath to the control key. They seem a little more convenient, but I guess any combination will do once you get used to it. I played awhile last night on my PC. After talking to the wrong people and trying to pickpocket the wrong people and then getting killed quickly, I learned to save the game. Just exploring around right now. I am going to try on my laptop for a little while since I am waiting for my next polygraph appointment to show up; then I will have to go back to reality.

i have to warn you. bad reputation can't be too bad, but really bad reputation is really REALLY bad. if you really plan to go that way, prepare for going into the rough, and focus your activities at the pirate islands. with rotten reputation, only the pirates will help you. if you're planning a lengthy voyage, prepare well. you wont be able to restock or fix your ships along the way if you'll be venturing far into non-pirate territory. the best idea would be to keep sailing between Quebradas Costillas and Turk Island, or somewhere near there. hoisting the jolly roger through the 'enter' menu at sea while near pirates will reset the pirate's relation with you to neutral, which could help a lot. the option is called 'hoist flag'. be warned: any other ships or forts which aren't pirates will become hostile to you. if you end up in a battle between pirates and another nation, and the pirates have the upper hand, hoist the flag. it will tip the scales in your favor instantly.

As far as key assignments are concerned, the only thing I can REALLY recommend is changing the default forwards/backwards commands. Personally I use the WSAD keys for moving my main character and that works fine for me, because then I have all controls close to my left hand and I can use the right one for controlling the mouse. Other than that I just use the default controls.
