Mod Release Build 14 Gamma Version [Last update: 19th September 2024]

Time for another update!
Mostly this one is about translations. @Homo eructus and @AkrimalS have been doing a lot of work on the Spanish and Russian translations respectively. Logbooks are now translated, so are legends on the map showing treasure and cargo quests, and so are some storylines. Those of you who play in the Russian language even have new videos in "Tales of a Sea Hawk" and "Hornblower", and "Hornblower" also has new voice clips.

If you choose to play as a female character and then buy a Letter of Marque, or if you start as a female privateer, you'll now get distinctive titles when you reach higher levels.

And a welcome return by @BathtubPirate heralds a new chapter in the "Devlin Opera" storyline, arriving just in time for this update.

I'm curious who can crack the Devlin quest. Having written it myself, I can't really judge how easy or difficult it is.

Are you guys still able to Alt+tab out of the game and then go back in? After doing a fresh install with this latest mod, I can no longer Alt+tab any more. All I get is a black screen. But I am pretty sure the game doesn't crash and is still running cuz I can still hear the music and sound everything.

Also, @BathtubPirate, is Devlin storyline complete? I have always wanted to try that story, but the Wiki says it's incomplete.

Not quite. I'm afraid it's a slow process. Or better said: a temporarily very fast process with long breaks. But posts like this motivate me to continue!

I've been able to alt+tab without problems. Maybe the configuration was reset to fullscreen instead of borderless windowed?

By the way, you can still try it yet. It just ends somewhere in the middle. But there is already a lot of stuff there, and many parts have different routes and variations.

Yes, the 2022 installer has "engine.ini" set to full screen and the updates don't have a newer version, so by default it will be full screen.

Edit "engine.ini" (you should find this in the top level of the game installation folder, not in the "PROGRAM" or "RESOURCE" sub-folders). Find these lines:
Code:
full_screen = 1            ; 1 = Fullscreen mode, 0 - Windowed mode
screen_x = 1024            ; Horizontal resolution
screen_y = 768            ; Vertical resolution
Change "full_screen" to 0 and change "screen_x" and "screen_y" to your normal resolution.

By the way, you can still try it yet. It just ends somewhere in the middle. But there is already a lot of stuff there, and many parts have different routes and variations.
Agreed. Save game just before you arrive at Martinica and again just before you arrive at Santiago. Each of these offers a choice of three ways to play; saving game before you make the choice means you can try all three. I've done this, played all three routes at both points, and can highly recommend the whole lot.

Sounds good. I will give it a shot once I am complete with my current storylines. I played the stock game storyline, Ardent, Hoist the color. I would say I love Ardent the most so far. I love a little story twists along the way. Feels like reading a novel.
1. Btw, for Ardent, I was forced to marry the girl. Anyway, I can get away from that path? It seems regardless of what you do, she would end up marrying you.
2. Also, would those powers try to take their colonies back once they were taken from them. Say I represented British and occupied Puerto Rico from Spain. Would Spain send a battle fleet to try to take it back?

1: There should always have been an option to refuse marriage. Was this after you had defeated the Dauphin Royal at Port Royale, then went to Santiago for further rewards? If so, the governor should have said something ending with "Perhaps you would wish to marry her?" You should then have had two choices:
"Yes, I would be happy to take Lucia as wife, if it is also what she wishes."
"No, I am not the marrying kind."

Next time you play "Ardent", at the start you could tell the Inquisitor "Never mind all that nonsense. I'm a black-hearted sea-robber and am only interested in gold, gold and more gold!" That will certainly block one route to marriage and will make "No, I am not the marrying kind" the first option at the end.

2: No. There is no automatic mechanism for anyone other than the player to attack a colony. Storylines can arrange for colonies to be conquered as part of the plot, such as France taking Speightstown and then Britain taking it back in "Tales of a Sea Hawk", or France taking Port Royale if you fail to prevent it in "Ardent". You could try to conquer every town in the Caribbean for Britain, or indeed for yourself, and nobody will try to take any town back.

Another suggestion/question: the availability of some of the side quests are limited by reputation. Many requires Bloke or above. It makes those who want to live hardcore/badass pirate life miss some of the fun. Can we possibly make all side quests accessible to "Terror of High Sea", the highest reputation on the evil end of the spectrum? I mean it's reasonable, right? Either you are a nice guy or you are extremely bad that everyone fears you.

Those quests tend to be given by people looking for someone they can trust. Toff Oremans, for example, wants his daughter to be rescued from an evil pirate - he's hardly likely to offer the job to an even worse pirate!

More sensible would be to write a couple of new quests specifically for evil characters. That requires someone skilled at quest writing and interested in writing quests for evil characters. Perhaps you'd like to try? Maybe try copying "Saving Toff's Daughter", set up another character somewhere to offer the quest, this one is only interested in someone tough enough to do the job, and the reward is a different sword. I can probably provide the sword if you can provide the quest...

If you are doing an update very two months, I can never finish my storyline. Just kidding. Btw, I am using the Apr update currently. Would it require a fresh install for this new update? Is it save compatible?

Up until now, it is save compatible. The next one might not be; if that is the case, I'll include a warning so that anyone who wants to continue an ongoing storyline can avoid it.

Hello Grey Roger, thanks for continuously providing updates to the game and everyone else helping to improve the game to this day, anyway i have some questions if you don't mind,

I want to update my game to the latest version from your provided updates, do I have to download all of your compiled updates and hotfixes from 2022 up to this year and install it to my game? or do i only download the one you posted on Jun 9, 2023? Mod Release - Build 14 Gamma Version [Last update: 9th June 2023]

Best regards

You only need to download the most recent one. In fact, you can only download the most recent one - I'm not wasting server space by keeping the old files lying around! Always check the first post of this thread, the URL changes when there's a new update.

The most recent update will always include everything from previous versions, unless a new installer has been created which includes previous updates - and in that case, the URL for the latest installer will also be on the first post of this thread.

@Grey Roger
I have been testing the 6 June update on NH14 and found and fixed an issue with the Thomas O'Reilly smuggling side quest. This issue was a change to the names of the smuggling guild blokes on Jamaica when you go to pick up the cargo. Revised dialogue file attached. Line changed is as follows Line 84 in the file on Notebpad++.

AddDialogExitQuest("bill_jellybones_attack"); //was "stephan_bonser_attack" Salonikasurf July 2023

Not sure if this will be affected by the new language translation & name changes versions.

Good to see that things are still progressing and you are still engaged. I am having issues with bad saves a lot but will try deleting the options file and trying again.

Odd - where did you get the version of "Bart_Cooke_dialog.c" with the line about "stephan_bonser_attack"? The version in the January 2022 installer should already have the line 'AddDialogExitQuest("bill_jellybones_attack");' - you don't even need the 6th June update, which does not have a version of the file.

Earlier installers did not even have "Bart_Cooke_dialog.c", it was all handled in "Stephan Bonser_dialog.c", which could cause trouble if you were doing "Smuggling for Thomas O'Reily" at about the same time as the meeting with Stephen Bonser on the way to the canyon in "Tales of a Sea Hawk". That is why the dialog for "Smuggling for Thomas O'Reily" was split off into "Bart_Cooke_dialog.c", while the storyline-specific part remained in "Stephan Bonser_dialog.c", now moved into the storyline dialog folder.

Hello, I have found a bug for the ardent quest, after escaping havana on a small fishing ship and landing on santiago the storyline started bugging out, after buying the cuba map and talking to the tavern owner that triggered the kidnap quest (engagement of the governor's daughter to the merchant's son) and renting a room for the next day i cannot board the quest ship i was supposed to board and steal, the icon is only stayed locked.

I've tried removing the followers and keeping them but no luck.

Here's the system log and compile log if it helps on debugging it.
