If Maelstrom is similar to New Horizons, you should be able to find first and second rates in worldmap encounters and occasionally while direct-sailing. On the worldmap, you're interested if the lookout reports a convoy, a small fleet or a battle fleet; and possibly a scratch patrol, a large patrol or a single merchant with heavy escort. None of those is guaranteed to have first or second rates, but other encounter types such as merchants, merchants with light escort or small patrol won't have them, and pirates never use anything that big.

Additionally, some of the storylines involve first or second rate ships. "Tales of a Sea Hawk" and "Ardent" set a first rate against you very late in the story. "Assassin" sends you against a second rate part way through the story but you aren't allowed to keep it. "Hornblower" sends you against a second rate very early on but you aren't allowed to board it. "Bartolomeu" ends up giving you a second rate, though not as a result of a sea battle.

also i seem to crashing whenever i go to port royal during jacks sparrows questline to start the curse of the black pearl, jack arrives at port royal cutscene

Could you upload your version of "PROGRAM\Storyline\JackSparrow\quests\quests_reaction.c"?

New Horizons also sometimes crashed at that point and its current version of "quests_reaction.c" is different there, possibly an attempt to fix the crash. Find case "And_the_Film_Starts". At the end, your version has:
Code:
            pchar.quest.You_need_to_pay_mooring.win_condition.l1 = "location";
            pchar.quest.You_need_to_pay_mooring.win_condition.l1.location = "Redmond_port";
            pchar.quest.You_need_to_pay_mooring.win_condition = "Jack's_arrival_at_Redmond2";
            DoReloadFromSeaToLocation("Redmond_port", "reload", "Sea_2_back");
            SetFleetInTown(GetTownIDFromLocID("Redmond_shore_01"), "pchar");
            //DoQuestCheckDelay("Jack's_arrival_at_Redmond2", 0.2);
Whereas the New Horizons version now has:
Code:
        //    pchar.quest.You_need_to_pay_mooring.win_condition.l1 = "location";
        //    pchar.quest.You_need_to_pay_mooring.win_condition.l1.location = "Redmond_port";
        //    pchar.quest.You_need_to_pay_mooring.win_condition = "Jack's_arrival_at_Redmond2";
            SetFleetInTown(GetTownIDFromLocID("Redmond_shore_01"), "pchar");
            DoReloadFromSeaToLocation("Redmond_port", "reload", "Sea_2_back");
            LAi_QuestDelay("Jack's_arrival_at_Redmond2", 0.1);
            //DoQuestCheckDelay("Jack's_arrival_at_Redmond2", 0.2);
Make a copy of your current "quests_reaction.c" in case this breaks it even more. Then edit "quests_reaction.c" and see what happens if you change it to match the current New Horizons version. (Comment out the pchar.quest.You_need_to_pay_mooring.win_condition lines and add LAi_QuestDelay("Jack's_arrival_at_Redmond2", 0.1);.)

how do i use the engines
They only work in classic Storm 2.0 Build 14.
They don't work at all in Beyond New Horizons nor the Mealstrom versions, to my great frustration.

You need planks on board as fuel.
Then you use the numpad +, - and * keys to control the engine setting.

If using max realism settings with word map disabled will bounty hunters still be encountered
I don't think so.

I'm not even convinced that feature ever worked in the first place.
I've seen the code for "punitive squadrons" ever since the stock game.
But don't remember anyone running across them.
They're only linked to failing to pay the debts on your loans.
Nothing else.

BNH: how do i keep my fleet from turning against me even when the captain has the right skill to use the ship and it has enough rum and food i dont know why the keep turning against me any help would be nice

Assuming Maelstrom works the same way for this as New Horizons, there are a few possible causes. One is reputation. If your reputation is on the good side of the spectrum ("Bloke", "Matey", "Dashing", "Hero") and your captain's reputation is on the evil side ("Rascal", "Swindler", "Bloody Terror", "Horror of the High Seas") - or vice versa - then his view of life, the universe and everything is at odds with yours. He is trying to undermine your authority on his ship, then he wants to kill you and take over your gang completely. Replace him with someone whose reputation is on the same side as yours. An officer with "Neutral" reputation should be safe regardless of your reputation; he doesn't care about life, the universe and everything, he just wants his share of the loot.

Which leads to the next possible reason. How much gold do you have, and how are you paying the crews? If you have over 1,000,000 and you're still paying salaries, they won't be happy. They don't want to risk being killed just so you can keep all the loot to yourself. Switch to payment by dividing plunder. And then make sure that, every few months, you do in fact divide the plunder. (You should have received a warning about this in your questbook, and if this is the problem then your own crew are probably also thinking about mutiny.) You can divide plunder by talking to any loanshark.

is there a yellow and black paint scheme for British ships

also in BNH after i finish boarding i cant attack the other enemy ships anymore unless i save then reload after a successful boarding

is there a yellow and black paint scheme for British ships
Not sure. "New Horizons" has it as an option during installation. Maelstrom might do the same, or it might give a choice some other way, or it might not have the choice - I don't have Maelstrom so I don't know.

You'll want to ask about that in the BNH section:
Beyond New Horizons

Necronlord42 previously made threads for every question he had. In order to avoid that cluttering the forum I consolidated them into this thread and instructed him to use this thread for his similar questions. There also isn't any general New Horizons section for all three versions.

Because of these reasons I'd therefore say that he can ask his similar questions in this thread. I understand that you as an administrator can overrule that but perhaps you'd agree that it should stay in effect.

That's fine provided someone familiar with BNH is reading the Maelstrom forum and can answer. Otherwise perhaps move BNH posts to another thread in the BNH section?

I changed the title of the thread to cover both versions. Could possibly work, and if it doesn't then we'll split it into two threads.

what files contain the flags and pennants
Look in "RESOURCE\Textures\flags".

"shpflg" files are warship flags. Naval ships will use those and so will you if you're a privateer or a naval officer. Each file shows all the naval flags for one period: "shpflg1.tga.tx" is for "Early Explorers", "shpflg2.tga.tx" is for "Spanish Main", and so on up to "shpflg6.tga.tx" for "Napoleonic".

"merflg" files do the same for merchant ships, which is why (depending on period), you may see British warships flying a blue ensign and British merchant ships flying a red ensign.

"frtflg" files are the flags seen on forts.

"perflg" files are the Personal flags. They aren't periods dependent. Each file is one row of the flags you'll see if you click F2 -> "Relations" and then click your Personal flag to choose a new one, or if you click the Personal flag when you choose your storyline.

"pirflg" does the same for Pirate flags. Additionally, random pirate ships you meet at sea will have a random choice from these files, though they're blocked from using the bottom two rows as those are special flags.

"shppnt", "merpnt", "perpnt" and "pirpnt" are the corresponding pennants. Forts don't have pennants which is why there are no "frtpnt" files.

gave skills to a member of my fleet do what are non-contributing skills
Exactly that - skills which don't contribute. There are also contributing and non-contributing perks. For example, your navigator will only contribute skills and perks related to sailing the ship - "Sailing" skill, "Speed Increase" and other sailing-related perks. He won't contribute "Cannons" skill or "Increased Crew Damage" perk, for example, because those are for gunners. The navigator is not involved in firing cannons! Likewise, the gunner won't contribute "Sailing" skill or "Speed Increase" perk for the same reason.
