Dreadlord

These are just a few of the ways to level feel free to add to the list as the system changes. Or comment on anything I missed.

Leadership (this ones pretty tough to level)
#1. Talk to everyone you see its possible to get XP from conversations.
#2 Complete Quests.
#3 Pay your crew when you're told to.
#4 *NEW* Find a damsel in distress and rescue her. (I got 10% from saving a girl from thugs in the jungle)

Melee
#1 Fight everyone you see.
#2 Fight everyone you see.
#3 Find more people and fight them too.

Sailing
#1 Fight a storm.
#2 Sailing around will level this up but not as quickly as storms.

Accuracy
#1 Shoot people.

Cannons
#1 Shoot at other ships (only gains on actual cannon hits)

Grappling
#1 Grapple onto other ships.

Repair
#1 Have your ship repaired

Defense
#1 Get hit.

We really need to make sure for Build 14 that we have proper documentation for the game and also somehow ensure that people WILL play the tutorial.
Once Build 14 is done, we really can't afford to get such questions anymore, since those kinds of things should already be clear to the player without asking. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

For now this helps enlighten those with a lack of understanding. I don't think there are many people out there with these mods who don't know about these forums. There could be worse things than people not knowing what actions they could do in the game that might show leadership. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Most of the things you can do to increase a skill are obvious, because you get a notification about it when it happens. There still needs to be some basic documentation to help people get started.

Some things are less obvious because they don't happen often, like getting leadership for completing a quest. I'm not sure if the grappling skill increase shows up. You get the skill increase but the notification might get lost.

You gain accuracy from shooting people but you also gain accuracy from hitting an enemy ship with your cannons. You gain repair if your crew does it as well as if it's done at the shipyard, and you should be getting more repair skills from the daily repairs than the shipyard gives. Getting hit by cannon fire and fencing gives defense skill. You also get defense from trying to open a box and failing.

Luck is more important that people realize. You get it from talking to people and failing to open boxes, and you get a small amount from completing quests.

You can encounter people who will teach you skills for money. This may be the best way to get skills when your skill levels are already high.

An important part of the autoskilling system is that you gain more skill at low rank. You also gain more skill if you're low in that skill. Things you do at the beginning of the game have a major impact on your skills.

Feel free to add these to your list.

I'm an old veteran POTC player, but I'm new to the latest mods.

I'm sure I don''t totally understand the new leveling, but having read this post, some of the things that seemed strange to me make more sense. The descriptions of what things you do will lead to improvements in different skills is helpful.

I'm posting in a different thread about many new things that are confusing me, but this post has saved me alot of typing of questions, and I'm sure alot of typing of answers that people on this forum have answered over and over again.

Be sure to talk to Malcolm Hatcher at the end of the tutorial once the next update is done.
Estharos has been working on adding more explanations to his dialog. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
And feel free to have any questions you might have. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I was thinking that there should be a mathematical system for the Auto-Skill system where is should give you a higher percentage on skills that are lower than 1/3 of your level, Is the Auto-Skill Math (calculation) system only in the MAXIMUS_Functions.c?

It gives you a higher percentage early in the game, so what you do early in the game gives you quick skill increases and later the speed decreases.
Sounds about right to me. The calculations are indeed in MAXIMUS_Functions.c. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Go check out the code. It's already being done. A couple of dozen characters or more got to level 20 to make sure this system was balanced. If you make changes, make sure you take at least 5 characters through a high level.

The first thing to do is to take two or three characters through the system to level 20 with the current code, taking screen shots and logging the skills in a spreadsheet every time they level up. Then you can decide whether it's working as intended. Try playing different styles to see what the differences are.

The current system isn't perfect and it'll never be perfect. But if you can find room for improvements without making a character have way too many or way too few skills somewhere in his career, go for it.
