age of sale - different eras

How about choosing different starting dates in the beginning ?
I don`t mean completely different games, only some adjustments dependent on your starting date.
At the moment it is outright madness to go pirating with a galeon - don`t get me wrong, I like difficult games, but difficulty should be realistic: if I am sailing in a ship like the Golden Hind, I don`t want to encounter a Victory-like ship of the line (the late 1700s equivalent of the Golden Hind might be a frigate). That`s not really much fun any more. On the other hand it is not rewarding to capture a heavy galeon or a trader`s caravelle with a modern frigate - to easy.
So couldn`t ships be sorted into two or three "eras" and at the beginning of the game you choose one of those ?
(The ahistorical skins of the soldiers from completely different times don`t have any influence on gameplay, the different ships have - though the availability of handguns could be restricted as well).

I've been working on that for a while. Most of it has gone into B14, but I was making a mod Pirates of the Caribbean: Patriots and Emperors, which puts the game into the late 1700s and early 1800s. My goal was to make the characters, ships, locations, events, etc. fit the Napoleonic period. By now, really all that needs to be done to complete this mod is to install B14 and change the date, because a lot of the ships were added to the build, there are a few other minor things like new soldier uniforms to fit the period, stuff like that.

well i cant wait for the day somone decides to do a real napoleonic Mod, with skin replacements and all the stock ships replaced with new and true napoleonic era ship models. not just reskins.

i can see a pssible conflict here with the new main quest. or would that be a mirage?

Once again, just like I said the the discussion on re-writing the main quest, this is not necessary. If you add the Jack Sparrow story to a East India Trading Company office in Redmon and make it a separate quest, you can add an Admirals office in the Fort and add an entire series of military campaigns based on the starting year!

This game is so versatile with add-ons, there is no reason to take stuff out!

If you don't want to play with something someone has added, don't. But don't take out stuff someone else may like when you can just add-on your stuff.

Personally I don't like it (I see POTC as something that occurs during the Golden Age of Piracy and heads towards its end.) but then again we will have the option of not changing it. :p

Nathan Kell once wanted to add this option to the game and I think there is even some half-finished code for it scattered through the PROGRAM folder. But it would take quite a bit of effort to get it working. So unless you know of somebody to do it, I'm afraid it won't happen any time soon. Would be fun to have different, newer ship types, weapons, skins become available as time progresses in your current game as well.

Then one could feel like the flying dutchman, haunted to see time passing by, be the terror of the seas and never age. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

i like THAT idea, and i have thought of it, but the problem is that time passes too slowly for it to work, unless you would be able to make jumps in time.

just a thought: what if you would have the flying dutchman, you could make the time-jumps once in a while?
